That is the one down side of owning a season place... even more so if it is on and island and your aren't able to check on it through the winter so easily. Over the years, my family has been fairly fortunately... Most of the damage is self inflected....

- not draining the water completely (burst pipes are always fun)
- forgetting something in the fridge (let me tell you milk doesn't age well) (don't ask)
- finding a creature or two that found its way inside because they can......

And those are the things you can prevent mostly.....

Now on the other had, you have the damage sheets of ice can do...... shifting permanent docks, braking up rip rap used to prevent erosion.... moving huge cement blocks used to anchor articulating docks....

Yep the first trip can bring many surprises.... This year I get to hear all about it over the phone, with the dreaded, "what do I do to fix it question"........

No unusual winter damage except
 

We've been on Welch since 1950--some significant dock damage in 1979-80 when the ice bent some 10" I Beams up at a 45 degree angle. (North side) Two years ago a tree fell on the tool shed (south side). That's about it. An occasional split pipe is to be expected, but I never figured out how a vertical pipe in the shower split. It should have self drained. A good opportunity to teach my daughter some basic plumbing skills. It's all part of the adventure. And it's all easier than Florida hurricanes.

Yep Had that happen once myself.... Only thing I could figure was a slight twist and fatigue...

you know Dan, boxed wine is safe on the boat and it's actually pretty good if you get the right vintage. The most recent box's vintage.... last Tuesday.

Except winter lol

For me, I still stand by what I said. Maybe it's an age thing, but for me time just rockets by now. I've been looking forward to our South Carolina trip for many months , feels like we just got here, yet it's almost over...just like that. Can anyone else relate?

I certainly can! Every year goes faster!!

We got back from Jost Van Dyke last night. 6 days seemed to go by in a flash. Got out just in time though, they had a water main break shortly after then a 5.1 earthquake hit early this morning in the Virgin Islands!

And it's only gonna get worse I'm afraid, so if you see me out on the lake going slower than normal, I'm just enjoying it while I can! [emoji6]

This is easy, and means we can have reasonable water depths past August 1. I still remember Hurricane Carol in 1954. Weirs docks were all under water at least a foot. Some larger boats in Channel boathouses had to be "sunk" to get them out of the boathouse so they wouldn't be damaged by hitting rafters/roofs. No thought about a NWZ lake-wide as far as I can remember. (No Marine Patrol in those days; Public Utilities Commission only).
