Perhaps the recent earthquake shut down the volcanic plume that was heating the water right there.

I wonder whether the predicted heavy rain and warmer temps will cause problems with the newly formed ice?

What is the definition of Ice In?

Ok, this may sound dumb, but what does ICE IN mean exactly?

I know what Ice Out means - and it doesn't mean there's no ice.

What is the definition of Ice In?

Sorry for the dumb-ish question :rolleye1:

Resident 2B 01-17-2015 07:08 PM

I am not aware of an official definition. Some years, the lake never completely freezes, yet we have an official ice out for that year. So, I believe it could be possible to have ice out without and ice in. :)

My only concern is once ice in is declared, some people will think the ice is completely safe everywhere on the lake. Be aware, the ice has varying thicknesses and is not safe everywhere!

Singing ice

We walked from Ellacoya up Scenic Rd this morning; the ice singing was loud and continuous. While the direction was well distributed the main chorus seemed to from between Welch and Diamond out toward the Broads.

Smith Point 01-18-2015 10:50 AM

I’ve got another stupid question. With all the bob houses in Alton bay, is there fish that deep in the bay, or is it easy excess to the lake and a good place to hang out?

I do not think there is a definition. It seems that it gets called when there is no open water as seen from the air. It does not mean it is safe. I for one would not ever call ice in. Some idiot would sue if they fell through the ice. :rolleye1:

Ice out is "official" when the Mt. Washington can make it to all ports, right?

Island Girl 01-19-2015 07:54 AM

Open Water this morning

There is a stream of open water in front of my dock. You can see it on Snake Eyes. Is there any other open water?

It's probably water sitting on top of the ice. It rained most of the day Sunday.

I walked out to Whortleberry from 19 Mile Bay over the weekend and there was at least 10" of solid ice everywhere I checked. Walking back to 19 Mile Bay Sunday we were in puddles a few inches deep in spots.

Now if we could just get some snow for the sleds!

My understanding is that this is the official definition for ice in and ice out is the mount route open or not.

If this was the case, then "ice-in" should have been declared weeks ago.

I still do not think we have an official definition, although over the last ten years or so, it has been called when ice covers the entire lake.

I don't think we have an official definition either. There was never before such a thing. But then, the definition of ice out was not always when the Mount could make it's way to all it's ports either. Emerson Aviation didn't always fly around and declare ice out.

pcmc 01-19-2015 02:05 PM

Imo,
Ice in = zero open water, the surface of the lake is shore to shore frozen.

Ice out = zero remaining ice, dive in. :)

Pineedles 01-19-2015 03:43 PM

:laugh:According to Wikipedia, there appears to be misconceptions about even Ice-Out. So I would surmise that there is nothing definitive for Ice-In either!

Gee that's a cold looking picture.

I'm surprised to see so many leaves still on the trees.

As of this morning, there is a patch of open water off Oak Street in Laconia. Winnisquam usually freeze before Winnipesaukee.

Alton Bay live cam

Oh, I do miss that live cam with the view of the gazebo that was up a couple of years ago. New view not too exciting. Any chance of getting that one back? I'm fascinated watching the ice.

That was a camera provided by the Spencer Hughes real estate office. There is now an insurance agency in that location. Maybe Irwin Marine - Alton Bay will put one in at their marina at the former Gillan Marine location.

upthesaukee 01-21-2015 09:46 PM

I posed the same question to Irwin after seeing pictures taken from their location at the bay. They said a Webcam was not out of the question. Fingers crossed.

Sandy Point

The family at Sandy Point has also shown some interest in installing a webcam, but I don't know if this will be the year. Also don't know if it would face up the lake toward Echo Point or down the bay toward the bandstand.

The I S S airboat has been parked there, next to the dock and in the open water created by the water circulators for a couple weeks, and comes and goes out to Mark Island, so it's difficult to say how safe is the ice close to the floating dock there?

Wolfeboro Bay Ice Conditions?

Looking to venture out of Brewster Beach over to Keniston Island this weekend. Any idea how the ice is about a mile south out of Wolfeboro Bay?

Its very early in the process but "some" darkish areas are visible in yesterdays satellite pic. Sebago is more pronounced.
