Thin ice indeed at the Wolfeboro town docks 1/21...

fatlazyless 01-22-2016 01:29 PM

Yesterday morning, I watched a mink running over the very thin ice in front of my place near Horse Island. The ice was so thin, close to shore, that the mink fell through a couple times, but did not seem to be troubled by this at all.

Today, what little thin ripply ice that was there yesterday is all liquid non-ice today.

With five straight days of sunshine forecast ahead, maybe the warming effect of the sun will start up the lake water, warming process?

Usually, the ice com-eth and go-eth, before it decides to stay-eth ....... but not yet this year-eth?

View of The northeast after the last storm moves off shore. You can see the drastic cutoff with this winter storm's snow fall.
You can clearly see Winnipesaukee and Sebago.

Ice

Looking at 10 day forecast and there is NO WAY ice will form in broads this year. Bummer!

For all those bemoaning the lack of snow and ice this year...how quickly we forget.

I've heard reports of anywhere from 10" to 12" as of Friday. I've also seen pictures of them with tractors out there clearing snow for the rinks so I'm thinking yes. I know temps are forecast to be a bit high this week and next, but the overnight temps look to be below freezing so hopefully we'll be ok to skate next weekend.

LadyJane 01-27-2016 03:53 PM

there are just four bob houses out there in Meredith Harbor today and they're close to shore. With more mild temps expected in the coming week it makes me wonder if they'll be able to have the Fishing Derby....or will they just fish at other lakes that are more safe??

Ice Access

In relation to this topic, if we ever do get a true ice-in, does anyone know the best ice access from the mainland to get to sleepers island? My wife and I just got a piece of land out there in October and need to clear several large trees. I was looking to clear the trees before spring as it is easier to cut up trees without leaves on them. I was going to walk out with the chainsaw, but don't know a good place to park my truck, legally. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Care to elaborate on your displeasure with my comment?

I have a military surplus silent chainsaw and nightvision goggles if you want to borrow.

Ice Fisher - Here's a shot taken just now with my Skype cam across Wentworth Cove. That's Governor's Island across the cove. The bridge would be on the left. It doesn't look very promising. I won't be taking the sled out on the ice this year I suspect. I hope I can at least get out to fish.

IceFisher 01-28-2016 02:59 PM

Thanks. Heading up Next Thursday was hoping there would be enough ice to walk on and set some tip ups

I'm heading up next Friday. Hoping for good conditions!

We can certainly hope for the best!. Got another week of potential ice making!

Meredith Bay Today.........

Took photo this afternoon. I had to laugh at the Bob house on the right which says, "The Place to Be" - right now it has prime waterfront and soon it may be in the lake! The forecast is calling for warmer days with highs near 50 on Sunday through Tuesday. I hope they can remove the bob house in time.:eek:

Lake Waukewan Today - Setting up for Pond Hockey

5 Attachment(s)
Took these photos of Lake Waukewan this afternoon - a very different story for ice conditions. This lake has been frozen over for at least a couple of weeks now and has 10 to 12" of ice (at least it did.) Hard to believe that it's right around the corner from Meredith Bay. A very smart decision to move the Pond Hockey tournament to this lake. Hopefully the ice will hold until next weekend.

I'm posting these photos for all the folks that live out of state and want to know the conditions up here in the Lakes Region for pond hockey, ice fishing, sledding, etc.

JerseyGuy 01-28-2016 08:21 PM

We are heading up sometime next week as well. I'm kind of watching the weather. There is a prediction of rain which I'd like to avoid. I'd like to get a little fishing in and some snowboarding at gunstock. I'll look for you on the ice if its safe. I've got a blue Clam portable "bob tent".

IrishEyes 01-28-2016 08:41 PM

Here's the forecast for the month of February.....unseasonably warm! I'll take it after the past 2 winters!
http://http://www.accuweather.com/en...monyr=2/1/2016

I skied at Gunstock this morning; it was a beautiful day. The conditions were very hard and icy in spots, but good considering we haven't had much snow. Gunstock has been blowing snow on the terrain park all week; just wish they would spread around the snowmaking on other trails that need a good cover! :(

Bear Island Channel - Black Ice

Ice turned black yesterday, with open water along shore of West side of Bear Island. Exactly like ice-out. Surprised to see any ice today. We HAD maybe 3 inches thick along Bear Island, on side of boathouse, in total shade. Ice-out before Ice-in??

hilltopper 01-29-2016 01:37 PM

I wonder if that bob house will still be "The Place to Be" come Thursday? Or maybe it will just be the place to be bass fishing new underwater structure this Spring? :D

Gatto Nero 01-29-2016 03:54 PM

Saw a couple of skaters come from Levitt Park and around 3 Mile Island today. I was sure I was going to have to grab a kayak and pluck them out of the water but they appeared to make it as far as I could tell.

rsmlp 01-29-2016 05:33 PM

I hate to be the party pooper but seriously? All you have to do is peruse the 10 day forecast to realize there is very little chance of safe ice on the main part of the lake and once you're into February I can't see how safe ice can form barring a tremendous drop in temps.

brk-lnt 01-29-2016 06:03 PM

The next 6 or so days look to be above freezing the majority of the time, but the weather into the 2nd week of Feb looks to be a bit below freezing the majority of the time.

I still think we'll see some usable ice form going into February, but I don't think we're going to get the kind of winter-activities season we've had the last couple of years.

Fishing Derby POSTPONED!

Laconia Daily Sun posted a "late breaking news" article on FaceBook that the Meredith Rotary Fishing Derby has been postponed for 2 weeks until February 27th and 28th due to the unsafe ice conditions.

NH Fish & Game announcement on Ice Derby

NH Fish & Game have posted on their facebook page that the Great Meredith Rotary Fishing Derby has been POSTPONED to Feb. 27-28 due to unsafe ice conditions.

Climate Change. Oh, wait, that is too political. I withdraw the comment.

Back to the lack of ice on the big lake.

Not really if all these politicians would just shut up about climate change we'd have far less hot air keeping the ice from forming. There you go a tax free solution! ;)

Just toss some inflatable pontoons on the side of your bobhouse and you never have to worry :D

Slushy Meredith Sunset....Jan 30

Had hoped to get out ice fishing this weekend, but no way....ice is very slushy in Meredith. Can actually see the sand on the bottom through the ice/slush. In any event, here is a shot of tonight's sunset....

Wolfeboro Bay earlier today: lots of ice, which looks solid (thin but no holes) all the way out to the lake. But there's lots of water near the docks. That big patch in the foreground is where the water is flowing in from Back Bay.

There wasn't anyone out on this past weekend. We have ice, but I am not sure how thick it is. I am not going out on it.

Here are some pics from yesterday. The first four are from Waukewan, the next two from my friend's house on Meredith Bay and a couple more from the town docks in Meredith. Hoping it gets cold enough at night to refreeze what melts during the day this week.
