Just didn’t look like the shape of Winni to me...although if it is, that must be Sebago to the East. It’s a very grainy picture when zoomed...looks like there’s a bridge over it too. I’ve seen better satellite pictures but thanks anyway! |

Sorry, I've been posting these satellite photos here for years. I assumed that everyone would know what they were.....my bad

Front or back?
Aha!! Satellite photos. Hillcounrty was right.
Are these the front or back of the moon? It looks like Rattlesnake Island in the middle of the picture. What a coincidence. I was unable to zoom in for confirmation. Is that me? Or my computer? |
From what I can see this morning, other than a few small open pockets of water in the “hot tub” area and one large one about the size of a footbal field just West of Welch Island, the lake looks locked in, or at least the area of the lake I can see. I see no reason with the extreme cold and mild winds these open areas should be frozen over by tomorrow morning....

On the way to Planet Fitness this morning stopped at Belknap Point, sunrise over skim ice looking toward to Broads. Looked like a strip of open water by FL26.
On the way home took a 2nd look. A strip of open water from FL26 area into Glendale Cove. A larger strip of water south of Timber and a patch off SW Welch. Otherwise mostly unbroken skim ice looking toward the Broads. Looking out from Ames Farm solid skim to Diamond, Rattlesnake and beyond. |
I took the following photo from the Scenic View in Alton this morning around 10:30am. The lake appears to be frozen from Alton Bay across to Wolfeboro.

I just read that Emerson Aviation has declared ice in. I think this is the earliest I can remember that the broads are frozen over. (That doesn't mean it is the earliest, just that I can remember.) As Emerson said though, it does not mean it is safe in the broads. Please don't go out there!!!
|
Yes the strips of water near FL26 and south of timber that I observed yesterday were iced over this afternoon.
Tomorrow's snow will slow ice depth formation so the recently frozen areas will not be safe for a while. |

Rattlesnake end of the lake?
Has anyone been out in the area between Treasure, Sleepers and Rattlesnake? Was thinking of getting up there soon, but not sure if that part of the ice became thick enough before the snow hit. Thanks in advance!

Anything new on ice conditions? are there fishing shanties in Meredith Harbor yet?

Not on the broads side, right? |
Correct! The area checked was on the east side of the peninsula, where the NW wind is blocked
|
Thanks. I thought so. I couldn't imagine the broads side having that much ice yet!
|
Up to Lake today. Meredith Bay has another house. Also there was a tractor with a snow blower cleaning the snow off the Lake in Meredith Bay. Seems to me a truck with a plow would be faster.

Has anyone been on the ice in the area of Shep Brown's or Cattle Landing? Where is the best place to get on the ice? What are the ice conditions like? I'd like to hike out to Bear Island this week.
|
Anybody been out by Sandy Island, broads side of Cow or Wingate Cove?
|
 HA HA HA !!!

Sheps/Cattle Landing access
Quote:
If you go to Cattle Landing, unless the town of Meredith has changed it's aggressive use of an ice eater around the floating dock, it can be very difficult to safely get on the ice there. Seriously, save a little electricity and drastically shorten the run times. You'll protect the dock just the same without creating a giant pond around what used to be a fabulous access point for that part of the lake. I will usually park in the public parking area and head up the road (west) to the first lakeside driveway. There's a slight embankment there, but that area is free of docks/ice eaters and a popular access point. Based on the other ice reports, I would expect 10+" of ice in that area. I'd still be quite cautious if you are passing through Cattle Landing (heading east towards Mark Island) and check the ice as you go there until well past Dolly Island. |
Anybody know how many inches are in Alton Bay?

My friend on Alton bay said they were plowing the runway today. They need at least 12" to prep the runway... |

They plowed the parking area, but not the runway.

Ice out???
Am I seeing things on the webcams? Has the ice melted? It looks like ice out already. I hope we have more winter on the way. At 7:30 AM it is 59 in Boston.
