SOME rare critters still around, though...
Quote:
BTW: A pair of Hooded Mergansers paddled by yesterday afternoon. They are a rare visitor and a very shy bird. It looked like the female had just caught a small crayfish! (The crayfish I can't ever find here). :emb: After spending long hours trying to photograph them in the past, I'll just include a file photo of the male here. They are extremely fast flyers and the smallest of America's mergansers. They are remarkable in having yellow eyes, transparent membrane "goggles" over their eyes (engaged when viewing underwater thingys), and a bill lined with "teeth". I've never seen them after our large patches of Winnipesaukee ice go away. (Or before the ice arrives). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ich_050501.jpg Or below, for some smaller copyrighted shots... http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:...ganserMale.JPG http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:...anser3-450.jpg |

What tickled my curiosity is the variety of movies (particularly westerns) and shows I've seen where eating snake has been on the diet. More particularly was a recent episode of Man vs. Wild where Bear almost ate an endangered rattler while traversing the Moab desert. Too bad he didn't, perhaps my question would have been answered more appropriately! ;) |
If it makes you happy...
the (Known)NH population of Endangered Timbers is probably no more than 30 or so animals. They suffer from most everything we do.... it would be kind of nice if we would just let a few live!
There will be a day when a child will open a book and share the same fascination for animals recently extinct that present day children have for dinosaurs! Pretty sad what took eons to become extinct in history takes only a short time to occur when man shares the same space. In our lifetimes we are going to see the passing of MANY species and what future is that? Roadkill |

Obviously, RH is a Herpetologist—or perhaps just a passionate hobbyist in them "Herps".
While "herps" such as timber rattlesnakes don't get much respect here, they're the "canary in the coal mine" for species that could disappear. But what will such a hobbyist be saying in the year 2057? (I've done a little re-wording to the original post here): :) Quote:

Gee.....you went DEEP

You should really try for something a bit more involved and more demanding of your few lingering brain cells. That witty notion why not post Rattlesnake Recipes..... sharp, dreadfully sharp! Funny you use the slogan with the word "Ignornace" in it. You cleary suffer a form of it and you fail to have the wit needed to make you amazing. Do you have all of your teeth? Love Muffin |

You three ride around destroying the landscape in your scooters? You rank in the limited wit department. If you really think I am crushed because I am now "devalued" by your gang of intellectual midgets you are clearly mistaken. We could have helped an endangered species but we instead chose to joke about serving it up for dinner. The two don't go together, if someone actually cared about another species then they would try to help.... it is the people that don't know a thing about it but need subject to sharpen their third grade charm. I think the three of you need to get together to collaborate on your next series of post, break new ground and use words that exceed six or seven letters! The Rattlesnake you claim to eat at your next Ronco Big Wheel Party are actually Western Diamondbacks..... not endangered yet. Just brutally exploited and forced out of their dens with gasoline! The same gasoline that ruins the ground water and poisons the land for every lifeform. But you would not care because you are not what? What could it be? Peek a Choo |
Still Around?
RSH,
Biggest surprise of the week for me is that you are still allowed to post here! Good luck with your effort to find areas still being used by the Timberback Rattlesnake. I respect you for that effort. There are some posts about these snakes on the web site for New England Mountain Bikers. However, your confrontational posting style seems out-of-sync with most/all other posters on this site. Perhaps you would consider an immediate and sustained modification of your style. If not, perhaps you should decide to move on. Good luck with your efforts to protect the snakes. R2B |
Nice Post R2B
You did a better job on this thread than I did on the "Bears" thread..:)
I agree that the orginal post was a worthy cause... Soo many people on here have been and continue to be advocates for the wildlife here in the Lakes Region. I suspect RH got a little to focused on the "humor" some of us put into our posts... I've tripped on that same thing.. and was able to "back off" my agenda... and have a smile... What's that old saw... "More with honey......" |
Interesting
Seems our RH has a bit of history... I'll bet it doesn't surprise anyone here.. :)

Your own worst enemy..
RSH
If I came across a Timber Rattler on my property, I wouldn't share the information with you. You may have had good intentions but your rants have certainly changed my mind. Endangered species don't need "champions" like you. You do more harm than good to the cause. |
One man's style is another man's ?????

But if one wonders if the "style" shown here may be detrimental to his cause, take a gander at this website about half way down the page titled "Kev's timber rant, January 2005" . Maybe its just me, but I didn't get any warm & fuzzy feelings after reading those few paragraphs! :( |
Asked and Answered
Skip..
Thanks for the post of Kevin's rant.... I still admire his passion.. I really do... My wife and I are really into adopting older "shelter" cats... (few people will take them) It's our "thing". Snakes are his "Thing"... so like I said... his passion isn't a problem... it's in the delivery of his message.. We deal with all the "crazy cat people" ( ya.. OK... we have 8 cats! :) ) comments from friends and family with a smile... RH needs to learn that it dosen't matter what others think... and he needs to learn that his passion may not be understood by others. If he wants to spread the message... he needs to "put a little sugar" on it. The way too old salesman in me could really help him if he would listen! : |
Agreed. If I point out to SteveA that cats taste just like chicken, or to Skip that LEO's do too, they know I'm pulling their legs. Or at least they hope I'm pulling their leg, but we all move on and let each others little oddities flavor the big mixing pot we have here. When Skip points out the chickeny goodness of snakes, we're baby seal clubbing terrorists who are out to pave the world with our 2nd grade education to RSH. But, I'm sure that to RSH its not his issue, its that the 50 or so of us who post here regularly are wrong.
So RSH, here it is. I offered what little help to you I could, even answering your pm to me and offering more help if needed. It was your choice after that to blast away with both guns and the tree hugging "the end is near" mentality we've seen here. For a 4x4 truck owning, mud slinging camping and fishing hick like myself your barking up the wrong tree. I'd go on, but I'd also like to be welcome here once your gone. Best of luck with your hunt! Skip and Steve, the snake bites will be served the Saturday of Bike Weekend! :D |

The land of Political correctness
is alive and well here!
One point is that if you are let's say defending cats and someone says "don't they taste like chicken" you KNOW that is a joke. Snakes on the other hand get abused since most people are terrified of them for so many reasons; most of these snake fears are based on misinformation and tall tales. As far as me doing more harm than good you are way off base there but it is an easy thing to say and the real good comes to education where I am top of the heap. We do many public reptile shows which are quite popular. Coming here is just my version of beating the bushes and hoping that there is something still out there. I might as well be looking for Wolves! I may not always play nice in a sandbox of angry babies but I will still visit them. As far as being a tree hugger or animal right's freak I am not. I do love animals and such but I understand there is a reality to all of this, all I try to do is slow the human impact on some of them. Pick away! Laura |

Tastes like chicken
Quote:
I believe that wolves do not. :p I'm not sure about angry babies. (or even complacent ones) I'll do some "research" and see what I can find out. |
Alligator tastes a bit like chicken but a bit chewier. I have tried it, the difference is that they are FARMED. I also keep them as pets and my biggest one is close to 9'! He is a WONDERFUL animal to say the least, nothing what people would expect from an alligator!
All Rattlesnakes used as food are collected from the wild generally at or near their winter den area. This means they are easily exploited and entire populations can be wiped out with little effort. I can only wish there were still Wolves in NH. Earwig |
