We need the wind to calm down, it looks (via the web cams) that except for the broads, the ice is forming nicely.

Wind, wind, go away...........

wadden 01-07-2010 04:47 PM

Ice and wind

The forecasters say the wind will be with us for a while. Does anyone know if the ice in any of the coves or bays is thick enough/safe yet for snowmobiling?

There were more bob houses on Alton Bay this morning along with a parked SUV and a snowmobile running around. Further north at the transition from bay to broads there also was a transition from ice to open water. Safe enough on the lower bay? Well apparently for some but I am not going out there yet myself.

View from Gunstock

Looking at the lake today from the top of Gunstock, it was beautiful. However, the broads are wide open and that is a huge part of the lake!

There is a long way to go for the ice outside of the bays. From Governors Island to the mouth of Alton Bay to the entrance of Wolfboro Bay, it is water. We need the wind to drop and we need it to get colder than it has been the last few days for the ice to grow.

The good news is the bays have locked up and the thickness is to the point where the wind is no longer a factor for most of that ice.

Looking at Snake Eyes this morning....looks like the Broads are "Caught", ...Nice Black Ice. :) NB

EDIT: 11:33 AM Now it's snowing.. some of the ice is wet.

Island Girl 01-08-2010 11:42 AM

Calm Winds

It looks like there is still some open water near Welch Island. The wind is calm right now... let's hope that continues for a while longer so the rest of the broads can solidify.

Yay!!!!! :D :coolsm: :)

There was two trucks plowing on alton bay webcam this morning... im sorry but you wont see my truck out there for a few more weeks.

Slickcraft 01-10-2010 09:42 AM

Ice in??

Looking out from Ames Farm and Belknap Point this morning there was no open water in view, sure looked like the Broads were solid. Maybe we will get a report later today from the Alton Bay fly-in pilots.

As there is more than a two week variation in time of initial ice set-up on the lake, the conditions are quite variable.

At the Glendale docks there were snowmobile tracks heading out as well as a track from a hand pulled plastic sled.

Four or Five planes have been there already this morning. The photo shows one parked one in the inbound taxi way. There also one out of site to the right.

Are there springs where.........

the ice does not form or get thick or??? I hear from some that it is not safe to do things like drive on the lake. Any information would be appreciated.

Webbsatwinni,
I love your chart. Here is a visual interpretation of the data calculated using your chart. I was always curious about the effect of temperature on the rate of freezing and the effect of thickness on the slowing of thickness. This chart shows it is pretty dramatic.
Thanks

Webbsatwinni 01-10-2010 04:17 PM

Rattlesnake Guy,

That is great, I an sure we will see that in the "ice in" thread for years to come. And on other forum too.

I can't wait to get back to the island!

Scott 01-10-2010 05:02 PM

Must not be much current in the water because even the Weirs Channel is quickly icing up with this recent cold snap. Ice has creeped its way up to the tail end of Channel Marine.

Merrymeeting 01-11-2010 10:50 AM

Not seeing any open water on any of the webcams anymore. While still far from safe, is it time to declare Ice-In and start the Ice-Out thread? :D

Well I love winter sports too. Skiing many weekends and the occasional sled ride. But I'll admit that by mid-March, I'm usually ready to watch for the ice-out countdown.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :)

I've told you once and I'll tell you again the best cure for the wintertime blues lies on the back of a sled! HK Powerspoorts probably has a few sitting in the showroom with your name on them.

Barndoor Bob 01-11-2010 03:35 PM

Looks 10 days of good ice making. Then lets hope for a foot or two of snow.:)

So Cool and So Timely

I have to share this with all of you. I can not believe how timely this is in light of the discussion regarding ice safety. One of my former students that graduated a few years back from my TV Broadcasting program at the High School I teach at is now reporting for a western MA Television station. His first ever live report was on none other than "Ice-Safety." Back when he was a student of mine I saw something in him that lead me to believe he would eventually end up doing great things. Now here he is only 22 years old and hopefully on his way! I have to say I am very proud of him!!! :D

Oh yeah and the info is timely and related to this thread too:

Cool for you Hazelnut

That must be pretty cool to see one of your students broadcasting. You must be very proud and rightly so! Congrats. It was a great newscast with good points. One that I find to be most important......never go out on the ice alone.

Thanks for sharing...:D

Great

I was looking for some information about an "Official Ice-In" date. It looks like people agree on January 11th.

Sounds good to me!

Is this earlier than usual or pretty much on schedule?

RSI Landing Ice

Hi All,
Talked to an ice fisherman today at Rattlesnake Island Landing. He reported 6" but he was only 100 yards from shore. He did not think walking out further was smart right now. Give it more time....It's making ice every night. Soon.:D

ishoot308 01-13-2010 07:54 PM

??

DBA;

Where is the "landing" on Rattlesnake island??

DBA 01-13-2010 08:02 PM

RSI Landing

If you have Rattlesnake Island property, you'll have access to the landing.

Gee Thanks....But the question was where in relationship to the island is the landing!

Redsoxlover 01-14-2010 12:12 AM

Broads still open in front of Long Island.

Just off the beach there are bob houses, not sure how much ice they are on but less than a mile down the island the broads are still open. The wind keeps breaking up the ice, won't be putting the bob house until it catches.:(

ApS 01-14-2010 03:54 AM

Ironically...

On Rattlesnake Island, the only landing I know of ...points directly at Welch Island! :emb: :D

ishoot308 01-14-2010 09:58 AM

Hi APS

Yes, I am familiar with that one which I think is more of an access road.

Thanks!

Dan

Rattlesnake Island owners have property on the mainland from which they can launch boats.

BoulderBronco 01-15-2010 06:40 PM

My brother just reported to me with 6-8" of solid black (clear) ice. He was about halfway between the Weirs and Meredith about 50-100' from shore. Thats more than I was thinking there would be that far out in the bay.

Slickcraft 01-16-2010 09:57 AM

Ice in declared yesterday morning

Someone told me that the average is Jan. 21st. So, this is earlier than normal. Although, I can remember walking out onto Wolfeboro Bay to watch the New Years fireworks before. So, that must have been really early.

Wolfeboro Bay along with most other bays are almost always safely frozen by New Years. It's the rest of the open areas of the lake that average a late January ice-in.

KBoater 01-19-2010 06:44 PM

Wolfeboro Bay

I agree with Wolfeboro Bay often being frozen in by New Years. We use to
try to ice skate every New Years.

trfour 01-24-2010 02:34 AM

Try, As We May...

The # One concern is to keep all safe out on the ice... Some forget about the inherent dangers to and go out there in the first place.
A point of interest is that most of us survivors into "The Oldies Club" ( if you will ) took the advise of our predecessors...
Now, in doing so, us retirees get 10 more Brain Cramps Per Month! :look: :)... NO TAXES AND ABSOLUTELY FREE...

A great video for ice safety can be seen here;

riverat 01-24-2010 06:11 PM

Now Winnisquam

Three trucks park side by side on 7" of ice, when the ice started to crack two made it off and one sank, just the plow showing.:rolleye2:
