All I can say is WOW!
|
Awesome video!
Remind me of the water ski races in the mid 70's when we had the unlimited class. The Maharaja long boards, the Catalina harnesses and sweet 100 mph runs were common. Of course the Winnipesaukee rough water kept the speed way down for the majority of the race.
Winnisquam races created faster runs as the water was much calmer. |
Nice!

Brave men! I like how those boats pop the skiers out of the water. Not like a deep water start behind an 33HP. |
What headway speed law.....

Great times.
There were great times back in the days. Too bad our children and grandchildren could not enjoy what we did.

They were crazy!

Found some old pictures. Remember the picklefork?

Nice pics
I saw a pickleboat coming out of the channel one time, maybe it was the same boat. I would have said the boat I saw was wood. Any idea of speed on that boat? I had the same white Magnum with a 115 in the mid 80's I bought at the time at Glendale Marine who also had one with a 175 at the same time. It had the side slots for the ski pole but no pole, makes me wonder if that's the same boat in your picture. I sold it to a guy on a little island east of Sandy Island in 1988. There was one for years in the no wake channel leading back into Krainewood on the right, it was either white or green. There's someone in Laconia that has 2 of them now that he plans to restore. He does fabrication and fiberglass repair but that's all I know. Any ideas on the jet boat?

Love that tufted upholstery.

nh cl. 460 bb jet. Has issues but appears fairly nice. Definitely use some gas. Lots of Carlson's on the lakes over time. Clearcoat on the metalflake
usually flakes off, not an easy fix. Happy Easter/holiday! Stay safe/warm if you venture out! |
Will post pics
My dad was a driver in the races in the early 70's, maybe late sixties too...There is a plaque on the wall in our camp with dates. My family has many pics of him and others racing and pics of people in and around the weirs docks during the races. When I post them maybe you will recognize some of the people, maybe you are in them? I am curious to see if any of you knew my dad. I also have a picture of the hydrodyne with the twins on it. I will post some soon. Interesting thread, I was a bit young then so my only view is through the pics my family still has. I do have many memories of riding in the types of boats you talk about, checkmate, sidewinder and tahiti. Does anyone remember an orange tahiti called the "orange plus"? That was my dad's. I think he had stopped racing by the time he owned that. I have a pic of the greenwink and will post it, my recollection of the pic we have is when it had twins. It is a picture of it docked at Pig Island. I think I need to do some scanning first. Stay tuned.

XK 22 was one of the first offshore designs offered by Chris Craft. Obviously beautiful lines. One of these boats served as the race officials boat during the races. Would love to see the Green Wink and the Hydrodyne again. There was an orange sutphen the "Minute Maid" that I think might have been originally named "Orange Sunshine". The Green Wink was Da Bomb in the day. Thanks for offering to share.

I would like to make a photo book of the races with history and make copies for those who ask. |

I actually have a bunch not scanned yet, that bunch includes the hydrodyne and the green wink. The ones posted by me so far were done by my sister not sure what she used, quality varies and I have cropped some. This was my uncles he didn't pull skiers but it was fun/fast and seems like it belong here. It had a 150xs short shaft (I think it was XS, it was some sort of racing version)

16 foot flat deck checkmate
looks like a checkmate that used to be moored at the small island off belknap point. we used to see it once in a while on a perfect morning screaming across the broads. great boat.

My dad test out alpine skis for the Northland factory. We were able to get a hold of a variety of one off Northland water skis including a very rare long board. Unfortunately we had to give them back to the factory at the end of the season. |

Craigslist Vermont. $2500. Looks to be in very nice shape. Volvo and 302, nice combination in a 16' boat (though the jet would be even better). Looks like it has a Holley double pumper. Classic ski/cruise.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that looks like a Century Resorter. Is it possible you sold that boat to a gentleman in Blacky Cove and then bought it back from him a few years later? Just curious. Thanks |
...yep...bought new at CM/Vinny in 67..bought it back from Ganong..He got it from Bruce G tho...good catch there Dip...:D...

Vinny/Stanley?
1 Attachment(s)
My dad bought an 18' Century in 1969 from Stanley at Channel. One of their earliest fiberglass models, the Buccaneer 18 with lapstrake design. Hull below the front seats split twice right on the seam, had a gusher going right between Parker Island and Jockey Cove. My brother and I went straight back with the bow up to Northeast Marine right into the slings. As it hung draining one of the workers said "never seen a Penn Yan do that!". Major fiberglass issues in a short period of time. I can still hear him telling my father "it's a tiger" and it was a big upgrade to a 318 from a 40 horse whaler. I was there one day when Stanley had blown the motor in a 455 jet boat by taking it out of the water. Mr. Callahan was so mad at him, certainly not the only time.
Anyone thinking of bringing a boat to Opechee please PM me as the Parks Commission is concerned about potential overflow, especially in terms of parking and boat trailers and they would like to try to track it. Thanks. |
We also owned a Century Buccaneer in the 1960's. One day in the the early 1970's when I was driving the boat the rudder fell right off!!! I was a long way from my home when that happened. To say the least- it was scary when I could no longer steer the boat.
|
buccaneer rudder
One of the first rides our family took was over near Gilford Marina after dinner.
The pin that held the steering shaft in place to the rudder fell out and the boat couldn't be steered. No one in my family was mechanically inclined, all we knew was the steering didn't work. Another boater towed us over to Channel and Mr. Callahan gave the 5 of us a ride back over to Center Harbor. That wouldn't happen today. good to know we were all having the same experiences out there! |
Vinny, Jack, and Cap'n Goodhue
Those were the days when marina owners bend over backward to please you, even if you are not a customer. Mr Callahan, Mr Irwin and Mr Goodhue were instrumental in a lot of public activities around the lake, in particulars, the Winnipesaukee pageant, water ski races, etc.
Vinny and the Cap'n are long gone, but you can still see Jack around the marina even though his sons have pretty much taking over the business. If you want to know any history of the Lake, Jack is the man! |
What great memories that brings back. We loved visiting with Vinny. He was the best, a great guy. We had a Century we bought from him and didn't buy a Sea Ray until later so didn't know Jack until later. But they were/are both great guys!

I'm enjoying all these posts about the old days. Those days are sadly gone. NB

Channel
My brother and I are 4 years apart, I was 10 in 1969. Mr. Callahan always addressed us when he saw us whether my parents were with us or not. We would go in the main hangar by the hoist to look at the boats. We never got in them but would just climb up to get to see them, we also loved looking at the new boats for sale as he was carrying Bertram at the time as well as Century. He never once had an issue with what we were up to, we had great respect for him and felt his true passion for boating. If he gave his word something would be done it was ready when he said it would be. Great lessons for 2 young kids. Gas was cheap, families fished in small boats and money did not play as large a role in whether people could enjoy being out on the lake.

76 cv 16 update
I saw the boat this afternoon near White River. The metalflake is excellent, engine starts right up and runs smooth. Original seats and bases, seat bottoms were redone at some point. Floors are solid orange carpet needs replacement. Has very interesting power trim with double hydraulic cylinders next to the outdrive that were either a Volvo product or aftermarket as opposed to the weak electric tilt system. What you see for the carb is a holley 2 barrel, 1/2 of a double pumper. Nice trailer repainted with good tires and bearings redone. Owner is firm on $2500. Interesting to see an old Carlson in basically original condition that was taken care of so well by someone over time. No thru hull exhaust, probably would be the first update along with a 4 barrel to ratchet it up a notch. ;)

Linder another early legend, what's not to like? Yours is probably late vintage as opposed to early vintage?
