Wind
Winds are supposed to pick up (11 MPH Th, 14 MPH Fr) over the next couple days. That may speed things up a bit.
It's been a very strange melting season. I'm over by Suissevale and usually that melts early and the lake ice out a week or more later. This year it seems like it will all happen around the same time. I had people snowmobiling in front of the house on Saturday, just a few feet of open water along the edge. Today I have about 100 ft of open water. |
Meredith Bay

Meredith Bay is still hanging on...all it needs is a good hard blow

Last hold outs
From what I can see on the webcams (would be nice to have an airplane right about now)... Center Harbor may still be blocked. Wolfeboro and Alton Bay appear to be open, but we can't really see the mouth of the bays.
I am not sure if Meredith counts as it was not on the original definition of ice-out. It appears to still have ice from what is shown on the WeirsCam. Given the incredible amount of melt today... Smith Cove went out near the Glendale Yacht Club docks.... I think tomorrow will be the day. We are heading to Rattlesnake tomorrow late afternoon... Woo Hoo (picture me jumping up and down screaming). I am hoping we have power if not... I will be ready for an early bedtime and take pictures of the sunrise on Friday. You will know we have power if you see Snake Eyes sending pictures. IG |
Oops
Sorry jeffk, just saw your picture of Meredith Bay. That is what I anticipated from the looks of Pine Island South and the WeirsCam. I still think that will go out tomorrow.
Chestnut Cove still has son ice at the shoreline... It does not count towards official ice-out. Rev up that engine Mr. Emerson! IG |

Three seasons: mud, bug and winter
North of Moultonborough Bay, the ice really melted big time today. There was light wind moving things around and by the end of the day, lots of little ice islands and a few bigger sheets left. The first few feet of the sheets were dark and grainy, rippling as small waves from dock bubblers hit the edges. As JeffK said, very unusual melting patterns for this part of the lake, which is usually iced out well before the other parts. This year, its sort of everything melting at once. The snow is mostly gone from the yard, about a month ahead of time. Mud season is all but over! :) But.... Here come the bugs. :(
|
So, if ice-out gets declared today, Wednesday, March 21, Thursday or Friday: then it will be an all-time record. Seems likely to happen to me.....could be tomorrow or Friday.
Watching ice melt is a lot more interesting when there's a real attractive girl in the view......as in catching some sun in yesterday's 80-degree sunny temps.......most times around these here parts of New Hampshire.....everybody out and about is an overweight senior citizen. So, why is NH so fat? Should be that the legislature should come up with some type of a Fat Tax; if your Body Fat Index grows to #25 or more, than you must pay! |

Only this year was more like a more southern winter, much more southern. :( |
I think we may be ready for a fly over by mid day.
|
Almost.........
It looks like a lot went out over night. The cams still show ice in the outer Center Harbor area, Pine Island, Black Cat Island.... come on folks get those fans out there and blow it away!
Moultonboro still looks icy... but does not count for ice-out. Hopefully Emerson will be taking a couple of flights today! I am almost packed... IG |

When will the ice disappear?
For days now, I go back and forth between the Bear Island cam and the Weather cam hoping for open water. Now the Bear cam view looks good but the Weather cam at the south end of Black Cat has ice floes.
I thought we might be just hours away from ice out but then I saw how much there is in front of Snake Eyes. I would guess several weeks of melting before that area is ice free. |

???
I don't see any web cams with ice on them (I could be missing it tho)
Does anyone still see ice? |
Are any of the cameras still showing ice? The last one I could see was weathercam and that is clear. The Governor's Island thumbnail showed ice when I last looked but that looked like a few days ago and the current image looks like a fine summer day, a big change from midday.
So... where is there still ice? |
Northern end of the lake
I know this doesn't count for ice out but I figured I'd toss it out.
19 Mile Bay is mostly ice free, the remainder I would expect to be gone later today or tomorrow. However, there is ice by the mouth of the bay around Farm Island. It's hard to tell exactly how much or how solid. 20 Mile Bay is still pretty full of ice. Probably not clear until Saturday or later. Moultonborough Bay in front of Melvin Village has a lot of open water with a good sized piece of ice in the middle. Clear possibly tomorrow or Saturday. The ice in front of me by Suissevale just disappeared. There is moderate ice at the end of States Landing Road in Moultonborough that will probably last to Saturday or a bit later. The winds seem pretty calm by me and that is slowing things down a bit. If the winds actually get up to 17 MPH tomorrow as predicted, that could clear things up faster. I have a Tai Chi class in Center Harbor this evening so I'll see what that looks like. Thanks to the DST change I will be getting there before dark. :) |
Braun Bay clear...
Braun Bay and Hermit Cove are clear....time to start rafting in Braun Bay!!:)
|
Looks good
The area around Black Cat finally looks good but try to avoid the area around Snake Eyes. It looks like a localized snow storm.

When the NH Electric Co-op is predicting ice-out on the Rattlesnakecam....

Time to close this Thread
Think Don can close this out by dark if Emerson flys this evening. All ports of call seem clear for the Mount to sail. Now just need April 1 to get here so I can catch that big tasty salmon:liplick:

Ice Out declared
Saw this on WMUR
According the to the Lake Winnipesaukee Web site, the Ice-Out was declared Wednesday at 2 p.m. However I didn't see it on the web site. |
Ice-out declared March 21 @ 2 P.M.
Oh well, I was only off by 26 hours. I had yesterday @ noon. Broke the all-time record set in 2010 by three days, which is impressive. Who knew watching ice melt could be fun? Awesome photos!
