Ice Out Watchers Unite!

Well, as I obsessively watch the melting -- eagerly waiting for the official beginning of summertime..... I'm psyched to see so much motion in the ice today!!

I note that I'm not alone in this obsession... 36000+ views on this thread.

Maybe a big "Hooray for Melting Ice" will help it dissipate!

Looking forward to seeing everyone out having fun on the __melted__ ice quite soon!

Best Wishes!!

Let's just get everyone that lives near the lake to take drive down to their local shore line in their car, then turn the heat up high in their car and open the windows!

For those of you on any islands or waterfront homes, please do the same, crank up any thermostats on your heat, and/or light any wood-stoves and fireplaces, then open your windows on the lake side of your home.

This should put us over the edge and give us ice out tomorrow! :D

Does anyone have any visibility in that area of the lake? If so, how close is it to being able to take a boat ride from say 19 Mile Bay to Hole in the Wall or Long Island Bridge area???

I was out today past Chase Island and took a ride out to chase Point. Did not see any ice on water even towards hole In wall. I would say ice is definite out in that area

Looking better

Most of the cams (esp Rattlesnake) that showed ice yesterday look clear this AM. Maybe today is the day - or wishful thinking

Thanks RSG....I've been watching that shot on the ice out page but unfortunately it doesn't help. Historically, the ice can be stubborn from Chase Point out to Hole in the Wall/Six Pack/Barbers Pole which prevents travel through to the Broads from Melvin. That particular area seems to be a blind spot for webcams and because it is irrelevant to the Ice Out call by Emerson, it doesn't get any pictures when he makes his flights this time of year. I think this requires "boots on the ground".

Agree the change off Rattlesnake is amazing. However, Wolfeboro Bay still looks jammed. Can't be very strong or thick...maybe today.

Maybe this Will Help

I didn't think to ask those with long hair to get out some electrical extension cords and bring your hair dryers down to the edge of the lake, set them on high, an point them at the water!

Let's get this baby warmed up! :)

Rich 04-23-2015 09:05 AM

Perhaps it's the wind pushing all the ice to this corner of the lake, but the last traces of ice I can see on the various webcams at 10:00 AM is in Wolfeboro:

(this image is live from the webcam and will change every time you view this thread)

Perhaps everyone should head to the Wofeboro docks and pour in a few cups of hot water!?!?!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yesterday I completed a shakedown cruise on my new motor that was installed this winter by Dave's Motorboat. Minge cove to Paugus Bay and back without any major ice. there were a few ice flows by Welch and quite a bit of big ice east northeast of Rattlesnake. I am back out to Rattlesnake this morning and the run out from Minge had no ice is sight. Motor is awesome! If you are looking for a new four stroke Dave and Kate will take good care of you.
Now I have to get to work and stop staring at the webcam........

Ice chasers

Wow .......How exciting! If I have to explain you wouldn't understand.

Broken Glass 04-23-2015 09:53 AM

Winds

The winds are brisk west northwest. There are no whitecaps but there is a stiff chop.

Any Damage?

Broken Glass - did you notice any dock damage in your travels around Rattlesnake?

Hi Dan
Dave removed my 250HP OX66 Yamaha 2-stroke (2001) (a real mosquito killer), and installed a 300HP Yamaha Four Stroke. Need I say night and day!!Love the new motor but more thrilled to be back out on the island working on the camp.
Thanks,
Dan

PS The motor is on my 2001 Grady White 248 Voyager "Good Stuff". she is my lake Suburban. It carries lumber, people, and is a great fishing boat to boot!!

Latest Report From Emerson

Wolfeboro Bay is the last hold out.
There is also some ice near Little Barndoor Island to Black Point.

Island Girl 04-23-2015 11:27 AM

And this from Emerson...

1 Attachment(s)
In addition to RG's photo from Dave Emerson, is Wolfeboro Harbor. It has been very stubborn. If you go to Corinthian Yacht Club Web Cam you can see the water moving and the ice standing still. Maybe we can take Wolfeboro off the Mount's ports and declare ice out. :D

We need an ice breaker

Some brave person needs to go out there and break a hole in that ice in Wolfeboro, then the wind will take care of the rest. In the meantime I will be packing for an island excursion tomorrow. ;)

Wolfeboro Bay locked in

I'm in Wolfeboro and there is ice all the way out on the East side of the bay where the Mount makes it's passage to the dock landing. Sorry to say no ice out today

Smooth sailing only seems to come once a year in Melvin Bay.

From http://www.melvinvillagemarina.com/webcam.html

We went from Melvin Village Marina to Pier 19 and Little Bear Island with no issues today. Looked like it was snowing in the Ossipees as we were leaving. Some pretty good size branches down in our yard... not a lot of leaves though!

Looks like there are some pretty thick chunks too

Chestnut Cove - Still some ice

2 Attachment(s)
There is still ice in Chestnut cove. While this does not impact the Mount getting to her ports, it could float elsewhere and become a hazard to boaters. With the wind blowing from the west, that is not likely.

Dinner for six at Lago

Had dinner at Lago a few weeks ago and they were running an "Ice out" contest. Donate $5.00 to the Meredith food pantry and take a shot at guessing ice out. Winner gets dinner for six! My guess was 4/24 at 1:30 PM

Who's hungry???

pjard 04-23-2015 08:51 PM

Love their chicken parm...I'm in!

Great guess! Good luck!

Great idea by Lago doing a fun thing while helping people in need.

Ice

With the wind and water movement this morning its hard to believe any remaining ice would survive. Don't even see any "icebergs" like the last few days

FWF 04-24-2015 05:51 AM

Drove the boat from Thurstons Marina to the end of Alton Bay, all clear, very little debris, ice out soon!

For the most part that is true but this year it froze completely....I have a video of us crashing through 5 inches of rotten candle ice last Saturday on my Iphone but I can't seem to figure out how to post it here.

Great to see your dock and breakwater all in one piece! Hope ours looks the same!

Rich 04-24-2015 09:23 AM

Now we only need to watch the Wolfeboro web cam: http://www.wolfeborocam.com/images/camera0.jpg

When the ice is gone, it's ICE OUT (Plus or Minus Emerson Aviation makging their check flight).

http://www.wolfeborocam.com/images/camera0.jpg

Just Sold 04-24-2015 10:25 AM

I agree that Wolfeboro's Ice is holding up the ICE Out but if you look at the Web Cam at Trexlers they still have an ice blockage out in front of their place. Won't change Ice but will limit travel under the LI Bridge.

An Ice-Out Dilemma

1 Attachment(s)
This could present a dilemma for Mr. Emerson. The declaration of Ice-Out may still leave large chunks of ice for some folks including the Long Island Bridge area, Winter Harbor, and the area east of Barndoor Island including Chestnut Cove. Here is Chestnut Cove now. Also interesting is that the water temp was 41 degrees a couple of days ago, but today it is 39. A very different ice-out indeed.

A very stubborn patch of ice has Wolfeboro socked in still. Again, we need a brave soul with a strong boat to go an break that stuff up so the pieces will smash into each other and dissipate.

Does anyone have the link for the Forum member projections for ice-out?

I think I had Apr.22 maybe?
