"Little Mount" on CraigsList

What a coincidence. My son and I were walking around Center Harbor in the rain this past weekend and noticed the "Little Mount" on a trailer with a "For Sale" sign on it by the Mount Washington drydock. We took a closer look and it was as a little sad. The wood work is rotten and peeling in places, the steel is looking a bit rusty, the whole thing just looked neglected. Having seen her in her glory days motoring out on the lake over the years this was too bad.

My son just sent me a link to CraigsList with the listing for the Little Mount. Here's hoping that it falls into good hands.

THose pictures must not do it justice, it just looks soo small and I always wonder were the people must sit, I will be up the lake the weekend after columbus day and will take a ride to see it in person, not for purchase, just to walk around it

A great hobby for the guys that built it. But that is the end of the story.

Anyone know what the purpose of constructing this vessel was?

Songkrai - I think the hobby was the purpose.

It was probably something along the line "If you build it they will come..." It's a cool looking boat, and would probably take quite a few weekends to bring back to a decent state but I'm not sure their is much of a market for it. Too bad.

NoBozo 10-03-2011 05:24 PM

I think the guy who built it had/has a place ON the lake..over by the Wolfeboro docks..with a "Lift". I think he just decided to build a ""Model" of the Mount for his own amusement. ...I'm guessing the "Model" is 1/4 scale...maybe prior to the Full Scale Mount adding 20 feet.

Anywho: RC plane modelers build in 1/4 scale all the time....OR some percentage of Full Scale.

I build scale model boats...to "Fine Scale"....For Museum Display rather than for the water......Just to see if I can do it. :) :) NB

fatlazyless 10-03-2011 06:57 PM

....& the asking price is?

First thing I noticed is there is no price attached to this 'for sale' item.

Trying to sell a used boat without placing a price on it is at least a little bit unusual. If the seller cannot place a price on it, then what's what with this? Like, what the heck is going on......hey......there's no price listed in this ad.

An ad like this without a price is about as helpful as some old stone wall that's been out in the middle of the New Hampshire forest, somewhere, for the last hundred and fifty years, since the wall last served as a wall.

Is this price correct........what.......oh........it has no price?

NoBozo 10-03-2011 07:05 PM

LESS: Calm down. :) I think the ad is aimed at knowledgeable readers. The last I saw....and on THIS Forum...the price was around $28k. That may have changed. We don't need no stinkin tire kickers..:D :D NB

I hate to say it (I REALLY hate to say it ) but I agree with FLL on this one. How is anybody looking at the ad going to know the price? The whole world doesn't read this forum and wouldn't just "know" that.

rrr 10-04-2011 06:37 AM

It's just very sad.

WeirsBeachBoater 10-04-2011 09:36 AM

Yes, the Little Mount is For Sale, and it does need some TLC, but it realistically could be a great winter project and ready for the water by Spring 2012. Mostly Cosmetic issues, I have personally been through the whole boat. I know it cost 6 figures to build and the last asking price was in the $25k range, however with that said, I am sure reasonable offers would be considered. I personally hope that a lake enthusiast, will pick up this gem and keep her going. It is also on ebay with a Buy it Now of $25000 So go bid, and take her home!

NoBozo 10-04-2011 10:25 AM

I saw the Little Mount last week. I noticed the NH Registation number on the bow is exactly One digit higher than the full scale Mount. ....NH 0002 MT.

brk-lnt 10-04-2011 10:27 AM

I've watched the fate of the Little Mount the last few years, and have though several times about potentially purchasing it.

My honest question though is "what the hell would you DO with it?"

It's too big to just have hanging around as an extra boat most places.

Upkeep seems like it can be a little demanding. There don't appear to be any facilities on it, and from what I've seen of people riding on it, the layout doesn't look very conducive to anything other than operating short tours, but if someone wants a tour of the lake wouldn't they just go on the real Mount?

I just can't figure out how this thing is worth even $5000 beyond basic scrap value. It's one of those labors of love that is only really truly appreciated and valued by its maker.

Rattlesnake Guy 10-04-2011 07:04 PM

Repeating an idea I have heard before.

As New Hampshire's number 1 industry is tourism.

As the visitors to New Hampshire are an important source of tax revenue.

As the Lakes Region is an important part of that tourism.

As the Mount Washington is an Iconic part of the Lakes Region.

As the Mini Mount is an incredibly eye catching object (when in good shape)

The Mini Mount could serve a cost effective service if it had a permanent berth, if put in an a proper setting at the Manchester Regional Airport. It could help attract attention to a section of further information to all of the wonderful things to do in the State.

The current owners would benefit as well from the ongoing publicity and sales presence.

Sure beats rotting away in the parking lot.

laketrout 10-06-2011 04:12 PM

I remember seeing it motoring around the Wolfeboro bay area 7-8 years ago. It would fit 4-5 people and be moving right along. I also remember the guy who built it had the house on the water next to Wolfeboro town docks. What happened to him, the little Mount belongs in the NH boat Museum in my opinion. All good things must come to an end.

I agree...

with Lake Trout that the Little M/S should be donated to the NH Boat Museum. It would be a nice gesture on the owners part.

tis 10-06-2011 05:05 PM

I think it would take up most of the boat museum!

I would love to see it on the lake again. But what an upkeep headache!

Last I knew the ex owner still lives there. I understand he still has projects.

The Millers wanted to retire from the upkeep of the Little Mount.

In a perfect world, the Little Mount would be taken over by the NH Boat Museum, but they just didn't have room for it.

Using it commercially is not viable from an insurance and cost effective point of view.

It is sad that being outside these past years have really taken a toll on her. Hopefully someone will come to her rescue.

However I haven't yet been able to figure out how to get the funds together (I briefly considered some high end criminal activity, but have a guilty conscience and definitely don't have the nerve!).

I sincerely hope that someone on the Lake that would value and enjoy her, is the buyer…

Summer is coming, summer is coming!! -PIG

PIG is right, The Little Mount would look incredibly perfect moored off Pine Island.

The State of NH should buy the Little Mount. It could be trailered all over New England to fairs and festivals to promote tourism in NH. The Barbie and Ken dolls posed onboard have to be worth at least $5K. Any NH Representatives or Senators listening?

This is probably the best idea. But sadly NH is broke. All state budgets have been slashed. Possibly a private government partnership.

Mini Mount

Rumor has it that my wonderful neighbor just purchased the Mini Mount. He couldn't stand to see it deteriorate any further. I can only confirm at this time that it will remain in the lakes region. Now I just need to convince him to launch it!

Jonas Pilot 10-15-2011 10:06 AM

That's great news. Please keep us posted if you hear anything.

robmac 10-15-2011 02:47 PM

If in fact it was purchased I for one would be more than happy to voluteer time and service to bring her back to her prior pristine condition.

Mini Mount Storage

Thanks for the offer robmac. Speaking with my neighbor he now needs to find an inexpensive, cheap, free inside place to store the boat this winter. Any suggestions out there?

Perhaps it's time for NH to get real and institute a sales tax or (gasp) income tax.

There, I said it. I'll go back under my rock now...

RailroadJoe 10-16-2011 10:34 AM

Absolutely, considering that all the states with sales and/or income taxes are really booming right now. California, Michigan, Florida, etc.

The economy sucks across the board. Newer and higher taxes have seldom been a cure for an overall lack of employment and GDP.

Misty Blue 10-16-2011 07:37 PM

Great News!!!

Robmac

I can't help with winter storage but am willing and able to refurbish this great piece of Lake lore.

I have inspected her and know that she needs metal work.

"Have welder, will travel".

Misty Blue.

Lake Fan 10-17-2011 08:48 AM

Glad to hear she found a good home. I bet there are a lot of people who would volunteer their talents to help with fixing her up. Maybe bartering rides or the chance to drive her in exchange for labor would work?

Looking forward to seeing the Little Mount back out on the Big Lake. :)

SIKSUKR 10-17-2011 09:46 AM

What are the overall dimensions neede for storage?

Fargo 10-17-2011 12:29 PM

Storage

I'm thinking that the boat on trailer is about 60ft long, 8ft wide, maybe 12ft high as a quick guess.

SIKSUKR 10-17-2011 12:49 PM

I have some mill space but it is in Manchester and the 12 ft height might be a problem. The bigger problem is access into the space.I just measured and there is not a way to get a 60 ft trailer through the doors.Sorry.

NHBUOY 10-17-2011 01:09 PM

Just a thought. I am trying to think of a large, empty building, in the Laconia area that might be available to house and work on the mini-mount.

I know of one in Plymouth that might fit the bill, but am coming up empty for Laconia.

It would seem to me, that an EMPTY building owner might consider reduced/free rent just for the publicity and human interest angle.

Glad this boat is being restored. It certainly deserves to be. KUDOS to the new owner.

Fargo 10-17-2011 04:00 PM

Storage

Thanks for the heads up. We need to find a Mini enthusiast that may have some extra space. The boat needs to be moved before snow flies. The search is on!

NoBozo 10-17-2011 05:22 PM

Best thing to do is go out to Center Harbor with a 100' tape measure from Sears......OR.... Heaths Hardware ..ON Site. My boat is in my garage and INCHES are important. I have to remove two 3/4 inch thick moldings from the garage door frame which remove width from the entry..to clear the width of the trailer fenders.. :look: NB

Misty Blue 10-17-2011 07:19 PM

Transport

I think that my truck can haul her. I'll check in the morning. I do not have a place to stowe her but if you need a tow, give me a call 455 7178.

Misty Blue.

Fargo 10-18-2011 01:29 PM

Haul

Thanks for the offer Misty but I think we already have someone lined up. I'm at Center Harbor now and just measured the overall length, 56ft not 60 ft, won't be needing such a large building after all.

RI Swamp Yankee 10-18-2011 09:27 PM

How about a corner of a hanger at Laconia Airport or Moultonboro Airport?

Fargo 10-19-2011 10:58 AM

I think there were a few issues with how the hangers at Laconia airport were being used a few years ago. Seems to me that only airplane related items etc could be in those hangers. I'll check it out, keep the suggestions coming.

Pineedles 10-19-2011 11:58 AM

Is it inappropriate to ask what the boat sold for? I can't see it on ebay anymore.
