June Boating Plans and Stories

Just wondering what everyone has in store for June? I know that the Peter Marakis Memorial Run is on the 12th. Does anyone have any other plans that are exciting?

I should be up every weekend except this one coming up, and should be up for anything fun!

Lets hear them!

Happy / Safe Boating!

robmac 06-01-2010 08:19 PM

BIKE WEEK

My favorite week of the year....

Ride the Harley, cruise in the boat, check out all the sights...Good time

We are usually up at least once every weekend until Oct from this point on.

Water is warm enough now to take the dog to Center Harbor for a swim as well..

Probably try and plan a Naswa meet sometime later this month as well.

DMAX 06-02-2010 01:06 PM

NASWA, B.BAY, WEST ALTON SANDBAR , Oh :liplick:and maybe a few poker runs... What more do we need.

Naswa - Check, Braun Bay - Check, West Alton Sandbar - Need to go, A few poker runs - ? all for it but in June? on Winni? Inquiring minds would like to know.

DMAX 06-02-2010 06:32 PM

Sorry, I guess I'm getting ahead of myself.

no worries. I am definately doing the Donzi run on the 30th but will be in Virginia for the Easter Seals one. It's too bad that it will always be the same time of year as Jammin but I will still be out.

Are you doing any not on Winni? there is one in Fall River MA, I signed up for!

Any details about the Donzi run? I watched it last year from Center Harbor and was wondering why there were so many Donzi's in Paugus Bay on my way out...:D

They allow non Donzi's to attend?

You really need to take that beautiful boat off of winni at some point.

Yes they do allow non-donzi's. I actually just met one of the organizers on Saturday at the Naswa... REALLY nice guy and hopes to have a helocopter shooting pics as well... I am definately in.. Hopefully you are as well.. It's nice having you cruising along behind me..:D

DMAX 06-03-2010 08:47 AM

There's alot of good people that do and organize the Donzi run . We had the privilege of being a card stop at Braun Bay last year and at Alton Bay the year before. Good times.

I cant take my boat off Winni for two reasons:

1. No trailer-we sold our trailer about 8 years ago when we decided we did not want to boat anywhere, but Winni. When we bought the Baja never even considered a trailer. I do have access to one, but no desire to go anywhere else at this point...although I did some Jammin on the James research seems cool...

2. I would have to change my screen name...;)

----------

I am fine pulling up the rear, until I build my new motor in a few years...

What is the date of the Donzi run 7/30?

1. got ya on the trailer and The Jammin run is something you may want to look at. Next time we get together I will show you the videos. Forgetting the boats and run, everything else is compelling enough to go.. Trust me! :D

2. That made me laugh!!!!

Yes the 30th is what I heard.

We usually do the Sebao run and the Donzi run on Lake George, also had planed to do Jammin, but not this year.. I just started my own plumbing co. so funds are a little tight. We did the Easter Seals run the last two years. Its fun but I think it would be better if everybody started from the same spot so we could all run together, like all other poker runs.

I agree with you, that it would be more fun by far. But if you look back even to threads from last year (not sure if it was the easter seals or the donzi run but), people were complaining that they were "scared" when this group of performance boats came barrelling into the bay. Claiming high speed and breaking of the 150 foot rule. The funny part is, although I wasn't there, I was told the MP were with them as a pace boat. Seems fishy.

DMAX 06-03-2010 10:56 AM

I think it was the Donzi run they were talking about. People are funny sometimes.

Or just trying to stir the pot to make hay out of something that isn't an issue...

They should get back in to their Prius's and go home.

DMAX 06-03-2010 11:30 AM

I"d go with stir the pot. If we go any further with this topic we could be in danger of scaring more people. So I'll leave it at that. :D

Gentlemen, this is not a chat room. Take your chit-chat and meet-up plans private.

OCDACTIVE 06-03-2010 06:18 PM

sorry, back on topic...

Other then the 3 that I know of: Peter Marakis cruise around the lake June 12th, Easter Seals on July 10th, and the Donzi Run July 30th are there any other get togethers or events worth noting? Anything more in June? I haven't seen anything for August.

I did hear that Safe Boaters may be hold a rally or a courtesey inspection by the MP but I don't know the dates. Anyone hear anything on that?

Are pretty shot. Got a job after two years looking. It's not what I want but its a job. I am on call every day. Days off are sparodic and there is no set schedule. I.E. Cannot make plans ahead of time. So if I am off that day, then that will be my boating day. Rain or shine.

Congrats on the job. I've found life/work/school puts life into one of two extremes:
1. Have plenty of time but no money
2. Have money but no time.

OCDACTIVE 06-07-2010 06:56 AM

weather is looking GREAT this coming weekend.. so lets hear them... Who is going to be on the lake? Any good Plans?

DMAX 06-07-2010 11:16 AM

NASWA and down town, This past weekend turned out to be a gift. Saturday turned out sweet.

LIforrelaxin 06-07-2010 02:16 PM

I am hoping to be on the water all weekend..... Will be the last weekend with the boys before they go to see their Dad in Arizona.... Thinking maybe Braun Bay for Lunch on Sat. or Sunday.....

Will of course be tubing and skiing in front of the camp all weekend.

As Scott knows Visitors always welcome......

And possibly a trip to Wolfeboro for an early dinner should conditions be good.....

robmac 06-07-2010 05:36 PM

Have plans Sat.off water,Sun. BB lunch and chair cruising.

Dhuberty24 06-07-2010 08:27 PM

be up sat afternoon. At the naz 20 mins later

OCDACTIVE 06-13-2010 04:36 PM

not so great........

Up all weekend since Thursday night. Speant almost all day Friday using my new shurhold power buffer to polish the boat. She looks GREAT! Mirror finish on the sides.

Splashed her yesterday afternoon and had to cover her right back up at the dock.

Got to go out for two short cruises today. Got to take a quick spin around Long Island. Picked up Liforelaxin. Great seeing you!

Then back home and pulled her out. Only about 1.5 hours. Still breaking her in.. I need another 9 hours before she is allset. hopefully next weekend!

I was so disappointed. What a tourist forecast! All week, WMUR was reporting Saturday would be 78 an sunny, clouding up in the afternoon and Thunder storm at night. I didn't see the sun once!

Well hoping for a better outlook for next weekend!

NoBozo 06-13-2010 05:15 PM

Just Wondering

I live in Rhode Island AND I look at the Winni Cams every day. Is this summer going to be another cool washout. I hope not. We come up in late September for two weeks and by that time things seem to warm up with sun. Still concerned about the summer for everyone else. :) NB

Great seeing you OCD... It was a surprise seeing you pull up this Morning. The run around the island was nice checking out all the recent upgrades. And what can I say she rides like a dream... even if we did have to squat down in the bolsters a little today do to the weather. I was told by the wife I was grinning from ear to ear... Hopefully you saw my enjoyment too...

I can't agree more about the tourist forecast... Had to get all the bikers up there I guess.... I had two kids and their grandparents who where hoping to spend Sat. on the water... Luckily the kids got to tube during a brief break in the weather on Sat.... which also allowed me to get the grandparents out in the boat.....

The good news is there are more weekends to come.

All us Winni folk, [including full timers] have learned to keep some sort of foul weather gear handy... In fact, truth be known, [No pictures I hope], I have dawned my snowmobile suit while out in about in the boat before ice out! Just to give the boat a lap of fresh Winni water and to get the cobwebs off'in er.

I retired and of late spend some time in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas, and just happened to bring some good O'l Yankee engineuity with that has served me well as well. Now, spring time in Texas, [ being in the tornado belt] can be very volatile and will drop grapefruit sized hail on you're butt if you should happen to lay down for it...
Long story short. Lake Winnipesaukee taught me at a very young age how not to venture out [without my pants up], so to speak, and even though NH and Texas doesn't have a helmet law, and I had to replace my high school shoulder pads to ware with my snowmobile helmet in defence from the hail. You ott'er see some of the looks I get from Texan's, on occasional location. :) :look: :) :)

Good thing is it's only less than halfway through June lots more time to crank up the hours.

BroadHopper 06-14-2010 07:37 AM

The weekend.

As for boating, weekend was shot. Work Friday and Saturday. Sunday was my granddaughter's graduation party in Lowell Mass.

I have tomorrow off. Weather doesn't look promising.

My daughter is up from NYC with her boyfriend for Father's Day Weekend. My daughters rented a fishing lodge up on Thompson Lake in Maine for the weekend. This is as close to 'Golden Pond' as you can get!

Ralph Baer's Orford Plains Speedway is nearby. Grassroots NASCAR at its best!

Rick,

Tomorrow's weather is looking pretty good according to the weatherbug!

OCDACTIVE 06-21-2010 10:13 AM

Overall almost a PERFECT weekend!

Friday finished polishing the boat then took a ride to Wolfeboro with the entire family.

Came back and had a dock party with a bunch of winni.com and sbonh members.. Great seeing everyone!

Saturday spun over to the Naswa and then to Braun Bay.

The only 2 issues with the weekend.

1. At Braun Bay there was a capt. bonehead... He didn't want to get in the water to walk his boat out (didn't want to get wet).. Since I was already wet I jump in and pull his anchor and start to walk him out. He gets carried by the wind and almost goes into the side of my boat squishing me between them. I was able to get out of the "danger zone" and my friends hold off his boat.

I ask him to turn his engine off because A. I am in the water B. he is now hooked on an anchor line. He says "why I'm in neautrel?" I mean really!!!

I ask him to trailer up his engine and he didn't know what this meant...

Anyway I finally get him out and everyone around applauds and starts telling me that it was the same way when he came in. Almost hitting everyone and had the people in the water set his anchors because he didn't want to go in the water.... whatever...

Well I get home and I couldn't have asked for a better weekend and then it happens. I go to start her and I get a zinnnnnnnnnnng noise from the starter. It wasn't engaging. Well I tried a few handy man tips but it didn't work. So boat is at the shop having a new starter put in.

Can't really complain. These things happen and it happened at my dock. So could have been A LOT worse.

So, what did everyone else do?

Pineedles 06-21-2010 10:42 AM

Father's day weekend was great as I have posted in several other threads, but I hadn't posted the boating part yet. Lance Packard launched my Jet Ski on Friday afternoon in Centre Harbor. My daughter took it back to the cottage and said she was going out for a spin, which lasted about an hour. Son and GF, and daughter had a full weekend on it with trips to the weirs and many favorite remote sites on the lake. It was dad's turn late Sunday finally but I didn't mind waiting. Leisurely trip along the shore in CH and into Blackeys cove admiring all the nice homes that have been recently built. I'll be taking it out later today to do some fishing in some secret spots. She's been running like a top and after many dissapointing years of all summer repairs on it, I think I've finally got a reliable vessel.

LIforrelaxin 06-21-2010 01:48 PM

Well my boating adventures didn't last long this weekend but they where completely enjoyable.

Friday Night I had an enjoyable ride up Moultonborough Bay, and joined some great friends, you all know who you where, for some great conversation over looking the lake. We even had a great photo op with three very different style boats tied up together... Boating is different things to different people, but it doesn't mean we don't all get along and have a good time....

Sat, was the normal heading off to Center Harbor for Breakfast. I couldn't believe how quiet the lake was.... I also couldn't believe the number of boats that where going in down at the Center Harbor ramp, while we where eating breakfast... At any rate it was then back to camp, a little tubing, and then off to Maine to finish out the weekend.

MAXUM 06-21-2010 05:13 PM

Was a perfect 10 for a weekend that's for sure. Not as much traffic as I would have expected to see considering the weather with perfect sunny and HOT. Can't beat a good day(s) on the lake, refreshing water, cold drinks, burgers and sausage on the boat grill. There really is no better place to be on a perfect summer day. Then again I doubt anyone on this forum needs to be convinced of that!

VitaBene 06-22-2010 05:45 AM

With it being the last weekend of bikeweek we went on a longish ride north on Saturday and planned to take the bikes to the Weirs on Sunday for the annual t-shirt bargains.

At the last minute we decided to take the boat- great decision, we were able to pull right up to a dock at both the Weirs and Meredith Town Docks. It was a little choppy out with the wind but a great day.

BroadHopper 06-22-2010 08:44 PM

Thompson Lake Maine

Spent Thursday thru Sunday boating in Maine. Thompson lake is very beautiful and the weather was second to none! We had the sailboat and the seadoo as well. You definitely need a depth gauge as the lake was very rocky. Most of the rocks were marked by plastic jugs. You have no idea which side to pass on. No Marine Patrol but there were fish and game patrol. We bought our fishing license on line. I did not see any performance boats. I was giving the thumbs up as I cruise the lake in the Formula.

Monday I was back to home port, Lakeport. Took my daughters boyfriend for a cruise. He is from New York's Thousand Islands region. He loves the lake! Took him to see the Bahre's and Marriott's compound. Drove over to Braun Bay. I was the only boat there! On the way, we cruise through 'Hole in the Wall' Some one plowed thru at maximum wake! Where's the MP?

Just got home from taking my girlfriend to the Town Docks in Meredith by boat. Great evening.

Summary of Five Days in June...

Each day of the weekend, at least one MP spent over an hour in-and-around the Marriott Compound. The MP passed closely by me when I sailed past, headed for The Broads.

I believe I saw OCD running past Rattlesnake Island—westbound on Saturday—then a bit later off flasher #9—eastbound—perhaps doing a clockwise circuit around the lake. :look:

The "usual offenders" were out there Saturday—totally unseen by the MPs. :(

One "usual offender", with a chrome-flash-graphic, tested his "Captain's Choice" repeatedly off our shores. :rolleye1:

Sunday morning was relatively quiet in the area, with the wind picking up strongly in the afternoon.

Monday, one MP boat left the Gilford area taking a ˝-hour cruise across The Broads, saving fuel (?) while once again heading to the Marriott Compound.

(And right-through where the "usual offenders" were on Saturday). :rolleye2:

Tuesday morning, The Broads were occupied by three sailboats—and nobody else! We were later treated to a terrific show by a very skilled water-skier enjoying the nice weather and smooth waters, directly off Rattlesnake Island. Only a very few powerboats transited The Broads, quietly heading hither and yon.

Wednesday morning, it's been drizzling—kinda normal for June—so today offers "that opportunity" to catch up on chores in town. (Maybe pay my semi-annual property tax "premium").

Wasn't me.... I came out of Long Island Bridge straight to the Naswa, then back thru Braun Bay then back under the bridge. Never got close to Rattlesnake.

Hopefully this weekend if she is fixed.. I think the starter went.

That "zing" sound suggests at least two possibilities: the "ring gear" is worn out in the usual spots—or maybe a $10 "Bendix" has shattered.

The expense of labor (today) to replace a $10 spring makes the replacement of a complete starter a sensible decision. :look:

Winni P 06-23-2010 07:53 AM

Marriott Compound?

Where is this located? We'll have to add it to our list of "shacks" to cruise by this summer....

We are headed up to Meredith on Thursday to spend the day/night so I am keeping my fingers crossed for goo weather :-)

I was down in Wolfeboro Friday morning. Came in around 1030am left around 1145pm. But other then that I wasn't down that side of the lake all weekend.

Thanks on the starter. Basically everyone has ideas as to what it is. Lucky me 99% all think starter. 1% chance it could be the fly wheel, which means the engine comes out.. Better here then in Virgina in 2 weeks!

One of the top waterskier in the nation recently move from the lake to Rocky Pond off Rte 106 in Gilmanton. I stopped the other day to watch him practice. What a show!

One of the nation's top female wakeboarder move from Winter Harbor to Lake Norman in NC. I remember her practicing. My spine tingled just watching her do a double flip off a boat wake! Impressive.

I vividly remember Dick Durrante from the late 50's and early 60's and the shows that the local water ski clubs use to put on. Those were the days.

The 'Catalina style' water ski marathons on the lake were another treat gone by. Glad I was blessed to be on the lake during the best years.

The Marriott Compound is a loose string of about 12 waterfront (and new 2nd-tier) homes. All are located at Mill Point—eastward—starting from Tuftonboro Neck's flasher 19.

The several "traditional" homes and boathouses were originally owned by a Massachusetts food purveyor. Was it "Friend's" bean company?

Especially in June, gawkers are welcome: nobody's there except all the region's maintenance people. :rolleye2:

The "goo weather" ended at Wednesday—Noon...it had stopped raining, and cleared to a lake nearly empty of boats. In the early afternoon, the lake had transformed to mostly-sunny with a perfect 11-kt breeze. ;)

That Mill Point boathouse that was built—blocking every abutter's view? Look for fresh roofing lumber :look: . The boathouse-owners couldn't see over it either, and are presently adding a second floor!

GM doesn't bother to machine starters to fit: GM starters must be shimmed. If improperly shimmed, the starter can damage the flywheel.

And...oops...a correction...I'd earlier dropped the "1" from flasher 19. :o

Now that I've reviewed the photo of your boat, I'm certain that I'd seen your boat—maybe it was Friday: There's no need to be shy about it, as I believe you were in near-compliance with Winnipesaukee's rules and regulations. ;)

Nope not being shy.. It was me on Friday. Had a nice cruise with the entire family to wolfeboro and back. Had to pick up some goodies at the yum yum shop. Actually had my 91 year old grandfather in the boat as well as my son. It was a picture perfect day for sure!

The several "traditional" homes and boathouses were originally owned by a Massachusetts food purveyor. Was it "Friend's" bean company?

I don't think so, Acres. Friends owned further up. The big boathouse was JCPenney. I think the Hertz family owned something out there but I am not sure I am remembering correctly about that.

Is it me, or have you had some bad luck so far with your boat? Seems like you are always having to fix something. I know the feeling, and it can stink. Hang in there man!

what can you do?

Yes and no.. it all depends on how you look at it. I got a great boat with a used engine. It had a supercharger which always means trouble. The full engine rebuild was my call. And to bring it back to stock was the smart move.

I had a couple minor problems that any boater would deal with.

As it turns out the starter went but it will be ready Wednesday.

Overall in the scheme of things I have had good luck. I knew the supercharger would need to come off it was just a matter of time and just having a head gasket go was an easy fix opposed to a catastrophic failure like throwing a rod.

The starter is just a starter.. what can you do... But the good luck is it happened after a great weekend and right at my own dock. no need to have a tow etc.

The great news is it will be ready for the 4th and for my trip to VA.

Good job man. It is refreshing to see someone with such a positive attitude.

Thursday and Friday off.

And I have to work this weekend. I love boating during the week anyway. It gets a little crazy on weekends. Had to look at a buddy's boat yesterday at 20 Mile Bay. He needs a new battery.

I traveled from Lakeport to 20 Mile Bay. After, head to Wolfeboro for breakfast and back to Lakeport in time for work at 4 PM. This is the fourth time I have been out and have yet to see the marine patrol. I find this unusual. The first two times out, there were boneheads everywhere! Last Friday, a small outboard with about 6 people on board was traveling from Bear Island to Shep's Brown. The small boat was obviously carrying too many people. I had to stop to let him cross in front of me even though I had the right of way! MP should have stopped this boat. Yesterday, there were a few vessels violating the 150 rule off the Wolfeboro docks. :(

MP funding

I have been surprised at the lack of MP presence on the lake this year. I would advocate for a MP support fee (AS LONG AS IT IS NOT RAIDED) in the boat registration for enforcement and would love to support a MP version of community policing.

Yesterday was quiet around the lake. Clouds may have had something to do with it but a great day overall. First time this season I saw MP cruise through Braun Bay for a quick look around. Saw quit a few boats either overloaded and or in violation of the 150 rule but still had a great weekend and got my sister inlaw and her husband out there with their new boat. Is it Thursday yet? may have to go back tomorrow ,forgot the phone maybe on purpose.

[QUOTE=LIforrelaxin;130767]Well my boating adventures didn't last long this weekend but they where completely enjoyable.

Friday Night I had an enjoyable ride and joined some great friends, you all know who you where, for some great conversation over looking the lake. We even had a great photo op with three very different style boats tied up together... Boating is different things to different people, but it doesn't mean we don't all get along and have a good time....

I totally agree.. It definately was a very cool picture. Just shows everyone can get along. 5 boats at the dock. 2 performance, 1 bow rider, 1 party boat and 1 fishing ctr. con... It doesn't get anymore diverse then that!

That would have been Sunday. (NOAA weather-radio termed it, "partly-sunny"...but I'd call it "bright-cloudy"). ;)

Without much wind, I still had "a great sail". :) What little wind was out there assisted me in the checking-out of new projects near my cottage...and found...that it's pretty quiet around this part of Wolfeboro as we approach the 4th of July.

On Saturday, a mid-morning scan of The Broads...greeted my eyes with the sight of ten sailboats, scattered all-about! :) :eek2: :) That's a lot of sailboats for any weekend in June. :look:

Am I seeing a lot more "sailing-talk" at this forum—this year...?
