Steamboat Rally

Is there going to be a Steamboat Rally by Lees Mills this year?
If so, when is it going to be hled? I checked the event calander and couldn't find it listed.

Steamboat Rally

The latest issue of The Laker (Sept 6th 2004) has an article on the rally and in the events section it says:

Sept 10-19, Lee's Mills Steamboat Meet, Lee's Mills Landing, Moultonboro. Weeklong gathering of steamboats with parade on Lake Winnipesaukee Sept 19 starting 10am through Green's Basin past Balmoral back to Lee's Mills. Started in 1972 the regatta has grown to the "largest meet of its kind in the world." Call Dave Thompson 476-2224.

Is there a public place where one might view the parade next Sunday?

Directions to Parade

The Lakers directions are: Lee’s Mills is a secluded cove and can be a tricky to find. From either Route 25 or 109 in Moultonborough follow signs to the Loon Center. Continue past the Loon Center down to the end of the road to arrive at the Lee’s Mills dock on Lake Winnipesaukee. For More information contact Dave Thompson at (603) 476-2224.
Thanks jonr for posting the information about this event. Sounds like fun.
McDude, we would love to see some photos! (I already have plans that day.)

I went to the rally today. First time I have ever been, what nice people. I was looking at all the different boats when one of the owners spoke up and asked if I had any questions? Of course I had quite a few as I am not well educated in steam power, about 3 minutes into the conversation I was invited for a ride. About 20 minutes later I was on my first steamboat ride on the lake!!! I would like to thank Capt Ken for the ride on the S/L Melvin!!!!

WeirsBeachBoater you are one lucky duck! I am jealous. ;) Wish I could have been there. Did you get any pictures?

It's a week-long event

Head up to Lees Mills anytime the weather is good, between now and Sunday, September 19th.

For the last eight years, I have taken the 2nd week of September as a vacation. The weather is usually ideal for checking buoys. Whenever I venture north, there are usually many steamboats cruising about between Green's Basin and Moultonboro Bay. This year was no exception. Last Saturday, the 11th, I saw no less than 10 boats cruising around. About another dozen sitting at Lees Mills being admired by others. By now, others have arrived and it usually is quite a sight.

Is there docking available?

Is there docking available in Lees Mills if you want to go by boat to see the steamboats?

PROPELLER 09-16-2004 08:22 AM

Docking

When I was there last year there was very minimal docking available because the steamboats occupied most of the docking. I would not count on it. If you wish to walk around to talk with the owners I would suggest driving by car.

Wow! Wish I had been there.

Oh, how I wish I had taken a day off this past week and gone up there! :( Next year, you can be sure I'll be taking a drive up and checking those boats out firsthand. Thanks for sharing those fabulous photos with all of us! Great photos! Some of those boats are obviously a labor of love - particularly the Lady Gayle - HOLY SMOKES! (no pun intended).

Lady Gayle in Moultonboro Bay

Thanks fpartri497 for the slideshow. I partuiclarly enjoyed looking at the interior of the Lady Gayle and the white bearded gentleman who piloted her through Moultonboro Bay on Friday. She was quite a site!

Starting Interest

I sent your photo web site location to a friend who is interested in steam engines. He got excited because he did not realize that there were so many steamboats still in existence. He originally boated on the Great Lakes.
Is there a site or group/club for Steamboat collectors?

Also, if you go by boat to Lee’s Mills during the week of the rally, can you see much or get a dock. I was going this year but got weathered out. Which day of the rally is the best to go?

Another Steamship Link

Here is the link to the society, which printed the fantastic book Farewell Old Mount Washington, by Edward H. Blackstone. It has great accounts of history and excellent photographs.
