Alton state rep-double motorcycle fatal
 

Read all about it in today's Aug 16 www.citizen.com, a 58 year old Alton state representative got into some type of a collision over in Alfred, Maine, on Friday, that killed the two riders on a 2006 Harley Davidson. The state rep was the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox.

Who knows why, sometimes people just simply do not "see" an oncoming motorcycle because they are conditioned to be looking for a car and not a bike?

Not assigning any blame games here.....just ruminating out loud....

FLL - the link you posted said that there was one fatality and one with serious injuries. This is a very unfortunate accident and I'm shocked that this State Rep was in the Old Home Day parade on Saturday... I don't think I'd have been able to get outta bed (...I'd be a wreck if I had hit someone like that... I just can't imagine...) Sad.

Oops, my mistakes, after rereading it, it says one fatal and one seriously injured. Very sorry for all involved...as the well-known bumpersticker says "Look twice-Motorcycles are everywhere!"

Sometimes they are hard to see as I've found myself almost pull out in front of one. I friend came to see me at work today and told me his brother was killed in Manchester this weekend after a 20 something yo girl went through a stop sign and he t-boned her on his bike.

I just sold my 2009 Harley Road Glide. In another forum I belong to, one of my statements was that I hoped I just up'd my survivability rate. Maybe I am getting too old, but hearing of all the deaths this year just made me more nervous than usual. If I move somewhere else I may get another one, but up here my spine tingles most of the time watching the Summer Folk not watching the road. They are always looking off to the side to see the lake or some Craft fair, deer, boat for sale, yard sale, etc. Sad to hear of another death. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. :(

Eyes on the road folks.....

It's strange this should come up now. Some people we know from Alabama were in a very serious motorcycle accident this weekend. An elderly lady didn't see them and ran into them. They were airlifted and will both live but he may lose his leg, her back is broken in several places and they have many other injuries. They will not recover for several months at least. Still, they are lucky.

I know I'm not conditioned to see the following:

1. Bikes coming up between me and the car on my right as I'm passing the car.
2. Bikes roaring up the breakdown lane.
3. Bikes weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds.
4. Bikes traveling towards me on my side of the road.

Yeah, gee -- must be my fault for not being able to see all these events. BTW, I experienced all but the last one this past week.

When bikers begin to follow the laws of the road, there will far fewer motorcycle accidents.

I ride a bike and agree with you 100%. I have a theory that if you are a bad or inconsiderate driver in a car you will be equally bad on a bike or on a boat!

Weather permitting I will ride to the FF with ribs in my saddlebags!

I too have seen all of these and worse in recent times.

And I can say with all honesty that I have also been observing really bad driving from people operating cars as well.

Interesting to me is that in many of the cases where you hear about motorcycle accidents you are not hearing that they were in the wrong,,,,

It almost seems like the bad drivers are at no more risk than the good drivers,,,

But then again I suppose its all a numbers game as to what percent of the operators will have an accident.
