New Laconia McDonald's - open!

Attention: the newly reconstructed McDonald's on Union Ave in Laconia is now open for your good eating......sound out the trumpets.....clang out the cymbals.....and tumble out that Ronald McDonald clown....read all about it in today's Oct 27 www.citizen.com ....

I heard that the American drive thru is one of the reasons we're so fat.

Greasy hamburgers

Grilled hamburgers are the worst fat food. Bring back BK.

BK is not any better

Anybody tried 5 guys yet? Supposed to be good quick serve food.

All fresh! Seems to be a growing franchise.

Five Guys food is excellent but certainly not low in calories.:liplick:

Only been to the one at Patriot's Place ...... 3 times. :liplick: It is not for those that want healthy low fat food, maybe that is why I like it so much, those juicy double cheeseburgers and a bag of crisp greasy fries are great. Once every few months may be enough. ;)

{edit} Could use one or 2 around The lake.

The Whopper has 40 grams of fat, 11 of which are saturated. And it has 970 mg of sodium (almost half your daily allowance).

For those with nut allergies - they use peanut oil.

Not only do they use peanut oil, but they have those huge barrels of peanuts for customers to enjoy while they're waiting for their food. There are peanut shells literally EVERYWHERE!!;)

Don't kid yourself. I just checked the nutritional facts on the Whopper vs the Big N' Tasty and this is what I found out:

Whopper - A ¼ pound* of flame-fresh beef, ripe tomatoes, crisp lettuce, creamy mayo, ketchup, crunchy pickles and onions on a toasted sesame seed bun:
670 calories
40g fat
11g sat. fat
1g trans fat
75mg cholesterol
970mg sodium
51g carbohydrates
11g sugar
28g protein

Big N' Tasty - A 1/4 pound* 100% beef patty, juicy tomato, premium leaf lettuce, pickles, slivered onions, ketchup and mayonnaise dressing on a toasted sesame seed bun:

460 calories
24g fat
8g sat. fat
1.5 g trans fat
70mg cholesterol
720mg sodium
37g carbohydrates
8g sugar
24g protein
I'm surprised.

Everything in moderation.

I am amazed that every conversation these days (everywhere, not just this forum) about McDs turns into some good for you/ not good for, debate. Seriously. It's almost like McDs in no longer politically correct. If you take your children there, it is somehow a mind form of child abuse. When did eating at McDs go the way of smoking a ciggarette in public?! Really...these days, tell someone you enjoy a Big Mac and a ciggarette from time to time, and you might as well have told them you enjoy doing a bag of heroin every now and again, and have some interest in child porn.
It's just food. Greasy food. Obviously not the best thing for you...but for many people, a guilty pleasure. And, yeah, OK, they market their product to children...oh, the horror of it all.
You want to eat there every day...good for you!
You want to take your children as a treat every now and again...great!
You want to smoke a pack a day...fine!
Honestly...I'm amazed at today's loony tunes who would utter the words "...I'd never take my kids to McDs". I have no problem with their choice, but it seems today's "do gooders" aren't content to just do their thing. They have to also point out that they believe they are better than every one else. Their way is the right way.

Anyway...Five Guys is simply awesome. For those in southern NH...one in Manchester, right near the mall. And one opening soon in Derry, off exit 4.

Where did anyone say it's not okay to take your kids to McD's?

Bigstan 10-27-2010 04:26 PM

Who needs mayo?

Mayo on a burger? No thanks. And if you swap to a Whopper Jr and drop the mayo you have a not so bad choice -

260 calories
4g sat. fat
35mg cholesterol
6g sugar
29g carbs
10g fat
0g trans fat
13g protein
460mg sodium

Fries are what kills you - 440 calories / 22g fat / 670mg sodium.

Switch to Wendys and opt for a salad instead of fries and you have a healthier option. their burgers are better anyways.

Kamper 10-27-2010 04:33 PM

I liked 5 Guys burgers. A little better than McD's or BK's. I'm not thrilled with the fries though. They are made from fresh cut potatoes and have too much water in them to crisp up as much as I prefer them. I took y left-over spicy fries home and baked them for lunch the next day. Much better.

My experience is limited to 1 visit at the Nashua H location so I may have hit them on Bad-Fry day.

Slickcraft 10-27-2010 07:12 PM

Went by the new place today on the way to T-Bones, there were quite a few cars at McD's. Some like McD's better than others. I am one of the others. I have to admit, however, to at least five visits to a McD's since they came to New England in 1960.

Nagigator 10-27-2010 07:53 PM

McD's

........just such a part of people's past. My first job was at McDonalds, two years during high school. Ended up being crew chief, my regular meal there was a cheeseburger and a TAB. Back in the 70's it was a sort of special place to hang out. Central Mass, high school, after the football game we all walked over there. Things are different now, I guess, food like that has become the norm, instead of the treat.....back then, it was a break from Mom's cooking.

VitaBene 10-27-2010 08:41 PM

Packaging

I admit to indulging in McDs on occasion. Somehow it is tasty but really not good:)

My real issue is with the packaging and seeming lack of recycling. The obscene amount of cardboard that gets tossed in the same bin with garbage cannot recylce well.

McDonalds Hamburger cartons they use for the Big Mac's and Quarter Pounder's and made from recycled egg shells invented by Simon Hodson arogant sob I had the displeasure of meeting on several occasions. He has made a fortune off of those boxes. Give him a google.

For about 1.99 & the incredibly high 9% NH meals tax, the new Angus snack wrap deluxe which has onion/tomato/lettice is not too bad....... what's the caloric/fat content makeup of that?

For about $0.00 & 9% NH meals tax (of zero) the no-charge large glass of ice water is good plus the price is good too......what's the caloric/fat content on that? Does it contain any two-stroke oil, engine exhaust fumes residue, or marina boat bottom cleaner since the public water supply is drawn from the lake right next to a very large & busy marina?

For about 1.00 the small french fries are not too bad.....what's the caloric/fat content on that?

.......

Driving past the new Laconia McD's late yesterday afternoon, the parking lot looked very full.....lots of parked cars.....plus it has something new; a two car drive-thru, with two side by side order stations....and two lanes or something like that? So.....WOW....how about that....a two car drive-thru......and right here in LACONIA......like wow!

...fried clams are certainly some of the best tasting worst food you can eat. As least in my humble opinion.

As far as a serving size, without the fries and cole slaw, I know I could easily eat 4 or 5 servings...at least.

I was with you about the Mayo on a burger when I moved to Texas years ago. They put mustard on burgers also down there. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised how great it is with mayo. I will not have it any other way now.

Wendy's burgers seem better only because they are cooked fresh, they are still burgers and still have as many calories as any other fast food burger. The choice of a salad instead of fries is fine, as long as you watch what dressing you use.

McDonald's in the Lakes Region is great for the vacationer who needs someway to please the tough kid on a rainy day and to give them the special treat while on vacation. The everyday trip to McD's is not so good, but I wish people would mind their own business. If I want to go to Mickey D's and get fries or burgers, that is my choice, I thought America was the land of the free, not the land of "eat only what I eat".

What's going on at the new McDonald's in Laconia. I drove by tonight around 7pm and the lines were incredible at the drive-up windows. I don't understand why it was so crowded?

Salads are not often a good choice once you pile on the salad dressing that they give you - especially the Asian Salad at Wendy's. I don't know about calories, but if you do Weight Watchers, those salads are 14 points out of a usual 21 - 22 points per day. Not a good selection.

The best bet at Wendy's is the chili and the regular burgers aren't so terrible either. Baked potatoes are a good bet as well.

My hand's down favorite fast food choice, though, is, without a shadow of a doubt, the McDonald's fish sandwich- fried fish, sauce and cheese. A heart attack on a bun, but a guilty pleasure.

Pineedles 11-03-2010 05:55 PM

Salads and anything Wendy's or Mickey D's has to offer is better, calorie wise, then the bacon cheese-burger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onion, catsup, and mayo that I had on my five-guys burger today. I won't even mention the fries, omg so good.

Couldn't agree more! During Lent, McDonald's always runs a special on the fish sandwiches -- two for $3.33 or something similar. I'm usually there a couple of times a week. Guilty pleasure, indeed! Nice to know McDonald's supports us Catholics!

McDonald's Alaskan Pollock

Here's a filet-o-fish factoid. Just about all the McDonald's fish are Alaskan Pollock, caught in the Bering Sea off Alaska, and are all processed on the same factory fish processing boat.

I tried to google that and find a photo of the ship, thinking it would be highly appropriate for this website, but no luck with that.

How about that; a fish caught in the Alaskan ocean, and eaten right here in Laconia, and priced two/$3.33. Is this a great country or is this a great country!:patriot::patriot::patriot:

This is just a guess-timate, but it's probably the case that the total of the NH McDonald's restaurants are number one on the list for collecting and paying the NH-9% meals and lodging tax to help fund the state budget.

What other business might be greater than NH-McDonald's?

............

On October 20, 2005, Senator Judd Gregg won about $820,000 in a national Powerball lottery, when he purchased four $5 quik-piks at a Washington DC gas station, and the State of NH received exactly zero.....nothing....nada....el zilcho.....bupkis......no revenue...as a tax on his win.

On October 20, 2005, every single customer who ate at a NH McDonald's got to pay the then 8% meals tax, so who was helping to pay for all the 11.5-billion dollar, yearly state services.....the McDonald's customers or Senator Gregg?

How about that; a fish caught in the Alaskan ocean, and eaten right here in Laconia, and priced two/$3.33. Is this a great country or is this a great country!:patriot::patriot::patriot:

Hmmm. Where do you get your information:

Filet-O-Fish
The world's most famous fish sandwich begins as one of the ocean's ugliest creature. Filet-O-Fish, like many of the fish patties used by fast-food chains, is made predominantly from hoki, a gnarly, crazy-eyed fish found in the cold waters off the coast of New Zealand. In the past, McDonald's has purchased up to 15 million pounds of hoki a year, each flaky fillet destined for a coat of batter, a bath of oil, a squirt of tartar, and a final resting place in a warm, squishy bun. But it seems the world's appetite for this and other fried-fish sandwiches has proven too voracious, as New Zealand has been forced to cut the allowable catch over the years in order to keep the hoki population from collapsing. Don't expect McDonald's to scale down Filet-O-Fish output anytime soon, though; other whitefish like Alaskan pollock will likely fill in the gaps left by the hoki downturn. After all, once it's battered and fried, do you really think you'll know the difference?

AB_Monterey 11-04-2010 02:41 PM

Have I eaten there. Yes, on a rare occasion.

Forget the calories and the fat. This turned my stomach enough to never go back again. Hey, it's a free country. Go for it.

It comes from a cow, yes, but before being stuffed in the bun of a Whopper or Big Mac, fast-food hamburger patties pass through the hands of a company called Beef Products. Beef Products specializes in taking slaughterhouse trimmings traditionally used only in pet food and cooking oil and turning them into patties. The challange is getting this by-product meat clean enough for human consumption, as both E. coli and salmonella like to concentrate themselves in the fatty deposits. So how does Beef Products go about "cleaning" the meat? With an approach similar to what you might use in your bathroom—by using ammonia.

See, the company has developed a process for killing beef-based pathogens by forcing the ground meat through pipes and exposing it to ammonia gas. And not only has the USDA approved the process, but they've also allowed those who sell the beef to keep it hidden from their customers. At Beef Products' behest, ammonia gas has been deemed a "processing agent" that need not be identified on nutrition labels. Nevermind that if ammonia gets on your skin, it can cause severe burning, and if it gets in your eyes, it can blind you. As an ingredient in one of the foods we consume most, our government doesn't even deem it important enough to inform eaters of its presence.

Add to the gross-out factor the fact that after moving through this lengthy industrial process, a single beef patty can consist of cobbled-together pieces from different cows all over the world—a practice that only increases the odds of E. coli contamination. So if you're set on the challange of eating fresh, single-source hamburger, pick out a nice hunk of sirloin from the meat case and have your butcher grind it up fresh. Hold the ammonia.

Really? I mean, honestly....you're saying that Mc'D burgers are not fresh ground, Grade A Kobe Beef? I had no idea??!!
What next? You're going to tell me that my veal parm from last night was actually a baby calf, that never got to run around and play with the other calfs? Or that too much TV is probably not good for kids? Or that texting while driving is probably not a good idea? Or that we really don't recycle enough in this country?
McD's is a place to go for one reason, and one reason only...it tastes good. I'm sure that your story is accurate, but my guess would be that, based on the crowds that visit their stores on a daily basis, and the lack of dead bodies in the parking lot, their product, in moderation, is basically safe to eat. I'm sure that in it's rawest form, the meat and processes to clean it are far from appealing. I believe that to be common knowledge. But in the end, it tastes good, and I'm sure is safe to consume.

RI Swamp Yankee 11-05-2010 12:56 PM

Well .... now we know the "truth" about beef, ask a comercial fisherman why he/she doesn't eat fish.

Hey, as I said, it's a free country. Of course, it's safe, right?

Hey Taco Bell adds silicon dioxide to their meat. Sound familiar? That's sand. They add sand to their meat to keep it from clumping during shipping. Is it safe to eat sand? Sure. You want to....even if it tastes good? Have at it.

I don't think the Hoki looks any different than any other fish.

No matter how often you pass around the Hoki... sand... ammonia... fat... calories... sodium... and cholesterol....

... it won't make this dead horse you're beating taste any better...

Burgers!

Maybe it's time to start doing veggie burgers. With a slice of cheese and some ketchup, they're not bad. The fast food world is just too dangerous! I just hope nobody's got some horror story about ketchup!

My First Visit To The New McD's

I got my first look at the new McD’s this weekend and even bumped into the Grimace – an honor to be sure. After reading all the anti Mickey D posts in this thread, I expected the food police to be at the door barring me entrance. However, throwing caution to the wind, I snuck in and ordered a McRib. Enjoyed it to no end. Tomorrow it is back to eating healthy.

Bunch of killjoys.

I cannot remember my last purchase at any McD site, and fact is I drive by both the new Laconia and the Meredith site almost every day.
When on a road trip, I might stop to use the rest room.
It's predictable!

I have same opinion of all the other "fast foods". You want to see a large greasy cheese burger, I saw a post of one on facebook! A visitor was discussing the restaurant in Atlanta famous for their burgers.

Breakfast Menu

McDonald is open early in the morning. They no longer serve breakfast Monday-Friday. Had to go down the street to DD for my Egg McMuffin.

Seriously? Geez. The Egg McMuffin is actually a pretty good option for a fast food breakkfast. Protein, lean meat and a few carbs.

Re: Breakfast at McD's

Am I reading your post correctly, Broadhopper? What’s the purpose of McD’s opening early if they don’t serve breakfast anymore? Does the drive thru serve only coffee and their usual daytime menu during those hours? I sure wouldn’t fancy a burger and fries at that time of the day.

BroadHopper 11-11-2010 04:28 PM

Yeap

Burgers and coffee. Go figure.

Chickie 11-11-2010 07:36 PM

Breakfast Hours At McD's

Upon further investigation, I was told that they still serve breakfast until 10:30 AM. They switch to their lunch-dinner menu after that time. It seems the Egg McMuffin is alive and well, but you have to get there early to partake.

Obviously a doctored photo. She's not bigger than him. Very funny, though.

fatlazyless 11-12-2010 07:07 AM

eeek ...

A mcdonald's that does not do breakfast......hmmmm.....hard-to-believe...something smells fishy here.....and it's not the Alaskan Pollock used in the fillet-0-fish sandwich.....say it ain't so.....a mcdonalds that don't do breakfast is like like a day without any sunshine....a day without your home town spending more money....a day without a political argument...or a day with 95-cent gasoline....does it really exist....a mcdonalds that don't do breakfast.....someone say it's just a joke and that it ain't so.

Of course they do breakfast, how can a mcdonald's not do breakfast? That's about the craziest thing I ever heard!

BroadHopper 11-12-2010 09:22 AM

I was told

by the cashier behind the counter that they do not do breakfast Monday to Friday. Guess the left hand is out of the loop of the right hand.

sa meredith 11-12-2010 10:43 AM

Wow...that is very odd. I assume you were there before 10:30.
If this is the case, I can't imagine they are even open at all at, say 8 or 9 AM. Must be closed until 10ish anyway.
Would be strange to staff up, and open, just to serve coffee.
Is it possible that, being a new building, the breakfast equipment simply has not been installed yet???? Just a guess. Equipment is probably all the same...

Meredith McDonald's - 25 Years!

Hey there......today's December 10 LaDaSun has a page nine photo of the crew at Meredith McDonalds and this Saturday is their 25th anniversary. In case you have never stopped in there, the Meredith McDonald's is probably thy #1 best Mickey-D's on the planet, and the food there is better prepared and cooked than any other McD's.

That McDonald's sees a lot of local people and out-of-towners walk through its' doors and it goes a long way in making the Town of Meredith a stopping point and chow-down place as people travel through central New Hampshire.

What with today's high price for gasoline and everything else, it seems like their Dollar Menu is definitely building customer support. Way-to-go Meredith McDonalds, and way-to-go Dollar Menu.......ra-ra-ra.............sis-boom-baaaa! :D:laugh::eek:

Keep eating those Happy Meals so that I can reap the benefits from their stocks going up.

This year alone they have done pretty good...take a look at the graph:

fatlazyless 12-10-2010 02:04 PM

As the saying goes, hindsight is always better than foresight, and all the FRM-losers who lost it all trying to make 15% annual return would have been a lot smarter to invest in the Golden Arches which has the power of the double cheeseburger going for it.

Say what.....walking through the wooded hillside, the walking distance from the Meredith McDonald's to the building that was home to FRM is like maybe 150-yards uphill. So hey......what a difference 150 yards must be for those who have killed themself (at least two suicides) with regard to their FRM losses plus the other survivors who are trying to maintain their lifestyles.

Who you gonna trust.......Scott whats-his-face at FRM or the power of the double cheeseburger and Mickey-D? ...:rolleye2:
