Gluten Free restaurants - west side of lake

I see there were several gluten free restaurants mentioned on the east side of the lake last year. How about the west side? My wife is on a gluten free diet while working with a nutritionist. We recently went to Fratellos and they had an (off the menu) gluten free rice pasta. I saw that 99 in Tilton does Gluten Free, but I don't do steakhouses, having been a vegetarian 39 years. Any other suggestions for a place that has at least one gluten free entree?

Just A Quick Note About Going Gluten Free

What’s a gluten-free diet good for?

There are only two established medical reasons to avoid gluten: celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, a very itchy chronic skin rash of bumps and blisters, frequently linked to celiac. In celiac disease, complete removal of gluten from the diet is necessary for life, and results in complete resolution of symptoms. Non-adherence to a gluten-free diet can have dire consequences (even if the person is asymptomatic), including poor growth, infertility, osteoporosis, anemia, bowel narrowing and bowel cancer.

A gluten free diet is now touted for many other conditions, from autism to attention-deficit disorder, irritated bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis and now even weight loss.

Although there are anecdotal stories about gluten-free diets making a difference for these conditions, there's really no good evidence to support such advice.

If your wife does NOT have celiac disease, there isn't any reason she should be on a gluten free diet.

Garwoods in olfeboro

Garwoods in Wolfeboro sorry for the typo, I hit the wrong key! They have a couple of items on the menu gluten free. I love their food, it's great so definitely try them, I'm sure the gluten free items are tasty!

I did not ask for a commentary on my wife's eating, and I find this post quite rude. She is under the care of a doctor and registered nutritionist, and I do not see what give you the audacity to suggest they are wrong when you haven't done a medical exam on her.

I am looking for help finding places to go out where we can enjoy a meal and she can eat according to her doctors and nutritionists recommendations, not for unfounded attacks on something that is of no concern of yours.

I think jkjoshuatree was just trying to be helpful. I don't think his knowledge is just casual.

SO: Would you allow someone from this forum to do a medical exam on your wife..? Just wondering. :look: NB

But if you read my post closely I was simply stating that unless she has celiac disease she doesn't need to eat gluten free.

I wasn't audacious nor did I say her doctor's were wrong. Geesh...talk about jumping down someone's throat.

The gluten free craze is just that. It's a fad.

At no point was I questioning her doctor or trying to be rude. Nor do I find my post to be an unfound attack.

Fitness/nutrition is my line of work and I was just trying to be helpful.

Have a great night you happy, jolly, wonderful individual!!!

You would be 100% wrong. You can have a wheat allergy and NOT have Celiac Disease. Ask me how I know? I've had enough endoscopies to pay for my GI docs three kids in IVY league schools.

This is from someone with a background in healthcare and has trained for several Ironman races where nutrition is as important as the physical training.
I can't eat wheat and I don't have Celiac disease.

I'd recommend you read this and consider editing your post:

Perhaps we could get back on track. My intent really was to find out where to eat out where there were gluten free offerings, not to debate the merits of my wife's diets. Sorry if I offended by my responses. Maybe its me...I've been tired lately. But I didn't intend to engender a speed limits type debate, I only wanted some restaurant recommendations....

Opinion? You obviously don't have a clue about gluten alleriges. This has nothing to do with opinion but medical fact.

I have significant problems with dysphagia due to a severe wheat allergy. It also causes severe acid reflux and caused inflammation of my esophagus to the point I was hospitalized. That's not opinion.

I don't care if you are referring to people using gluten free as a lifestyle for eating. However, it is a more practical way to eat as it inherently restricts people from eating a lot of processed foods if adhered too.

If you want to preach about "eating" right, etc go ahead but please get educated on what your talking about regarding Celiac disease and wheat allegies. You absolutely can have issues with Gluten and not have Celiac disease.

As someone who has to eat gluten free, I would just state to learn what you can and can not eat. Your wife probably got that from her nutritionist. Gluten is in things you'd never expect it like Campbells tomato soup, salad dressings, etc.

Most chain restaurants like Olive Garden have gluten free menus so just ask.

I would think (hope actually) that someone in the food service industry would understand the concern about food allergies.

When you see someone avoid bread or other similar items in your restaurant it's not always because of a "fad" diet. It's a medical necessity. Unfortunately there are people who do not get the proper workup to find out what is causing their personal issues.

It's not being touchy. Maybe jk should come away learning something. Seeing his post about gluten free being only related to Celiac disease is just plain wrong. I would not have even replied to this thread until I saw that post.

Keep thinking highly of yourself. At least I can admit when I don't have the correct information.

If you are in the fitness or nutrition fields, then you SHOULD take this as a learning.

And just to rub it in, a gluten-free diet can help solve metabolic/insulin resistance issues so gluten free is not just for people with wheat allergens or Celiac disease.

jkjoshuatree 01-07-2011 04:18 PM

Oh Yeah...

...forgot to tell you.

It's not wrong. Do your research a little bit more thoroughly before you start accusing people of certain things.

You may want to go back and read my ENTIRE post again.

But thanks for your concern.

I did but your post begins with the following statement which is simply incorrect.

There are only two established medical reasons to avoid gluten: celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis...

So you are telling me to do a little research on Celiac disease or gluten allergies? Hey, I'm open to learning but I can't wait to link this post to some of my former co-workers. They'll get a chuckle out of it. And yes, I am being a snob....

It was from a very reliable source.

The entire post was a quote except for the last line.

Glad to know you're a snob. That's refreshing. And link away...have fun.

Now...shall we get back to the question that was posted?

I, for one, am done with this senseless bickering.

Love you Lawn!!!

Fratello's & Kitchen Cravings...

...both list gluten-free items on their menus.

Enjoy!

Gluten free and vegetarian

Have a close family friend with Celiac's. Pizzeria Uno has GF items and vegetarian menu too.
http://www.unos.com/nutrition.php
I'm pretty sure Guisseppe's in Meredith offers a gluten free pizza.
Also, If you are inspired to cook or grill at home , then consider Wining Butcher in Gilford and Meredith. some of their marinated beef and chicken are gluten free, just ask them which.
We've also dined with our GF friend at 99, Fratellos and Patrick's Pub and give them all a thumbs up!

I wouldn't rule out the 99 - their regular menu is pretty good for you (not just steaks), and they do have good GF options.
