Link Big Winni with little Winni
How come the big lake has never been connected to Winnisquam? Seems like it could be simpl.
Too big an operation to do?? |
It was!
It was connected thousands of years ago.

It would require a whole lot of dredging and installation of a set of locks.... not very economically feasible... not to mention the enviro impact.

I think that was one of the schemes considerred in the 1800's to link Portsmouth and/or Boston to Lake Champlain. That was not ecomomically feasable, especially since the railroads were getting into development.
I think the same factors would have applied to a local inter-lake hook-up also. Cheaper to put stuff on the train from anywhere on Winnipisaukee than tranship it to Winnisquam and transfer to train anyway. |
fun to think about
It is a fun idea to think about.
It would change the face of Downtown Laconia, and for the better, how neat of an area would that become. As far as the environment is concerned in the end it would be no different than the dams that are there now. The largest hurdle besides funding would be the NHDES, EPA, and the Army Corp Engineers, and 99% of the hurdles would be construction related sedimentation controls. Fun to dream thoooo... |

And, there is the issue of a few very low bridges.....

Could Be A Toll Bridge As Well...
Hey Steve, that is a fine bridge!... For some,
Say, if you didn't read your owners manual, forgot to check your oil and your BMW's engine seized up on that bridge?... Oh, the headaches just got worse if your car quit!... They would run a cable around them spools and tow you off so's to let the rest have free passage! Only kidding, of course. Terry _______________________________ |

We don't live too far from that bridge - it's always fun to bring out of town visitors over there for a look-see.:) |
There was talk in the 50s and 60s of a bridge across the lake. The most popular idea as I recall and I may be wrong was Tuftonboro to Cow Is. and somehow across from there. Can you imagine trying to get the permits today for a bridge like that???? Would never happen!

lockes
My dad once told me that they had a plan to build lockes from greenbay to Alton Bay and you would have access to the ocean. If I recall he told me that about the same time they brought the Winni Bell from Portsmouth to Alton Bay. Just think of the cost of that. And apparently someone other than the gov't did for they did not build it!
