Getting To Pops

Trying to picture where Pops is and it just isn't clicking as I'm not very familiar with that side of the lake. If I'm pulling out of the Wal Mart beside the Laconia airport do I take a left and just keep going? Sorry for the terrible example but like I said I'm just not sure. :(

jrc 06-01-2011 06:10 AM

yes, it's about 15 miles, it will be on your right

Slickcraft 06-01-2011 06:53 AM

Just a short distance after that left out of Gilford Walmart the road becomes Rt 11 east toward Alton. Pops is about 1/4 mile before the southern tip of Alton Bay. As jrc noted it is on the right coming down from Gilford.

Rattlesnake Guy 06-01-2011 02:44 PM

Just across the street from Pops is an old train station right on the edge of the sidewalk. Still has the mechanical flag signal poking out into the street. If you go too far, you will see a big parking lot on your left with a bandstand in the water and another bandstand on the land. You can see the Grey building for Pops from that parking lot. Often times Pop has his pickup sitting there with a plywood ice cream cone.

We love Pops and go often.

At $23.95 for a Clam plate, I hope you enjoy it. That is quite expensive to us working class people. The wife and I drove through Alton and decided to stop for some clams, drove in and saw the prices and drove out. We'll stick to BayHaven in Cornish Maine if we want excellent seafood at a excellent price.

http://i43.tinypic.com/b4vwqe.gif on the prices not going to Maine. Also the building is a little to close to the ground if you get my drift.

$13.95 for baby shrimp plate

I ordered the baby shrimp plate to go which came to just about $15.00 with the tax, but you have to realize that shrimp plate could easily feed 3 people. I was so astonished that I actually counted them. 49 shrimp! plus enough cole slaw to fill a cereal bowl and enough fries to feed 3. I had two meals on that one plate + had some fries and cole slaw left for a 3rd. If you split a $15 plate between 2 people I don't think that's too much $. Knowing what I do, if you had ordered 1 clam plate, you and the missus would have had more than enough to eat and probably taken some home. Try it the next time you're in Alton. The biggest mistake newbies make is ordering too much.

Happy Gourmand 06-01-2011 04:05 PM

Working class guy here too!

Pop's is a bargain. I think other forum members will agree that 1 clam plate at Pop's will easily feed 2 people. As a comparason, we went to the new Weathervane at the Weirs the other day....Scallop BASKET was 19.95. Came with fries and nothing else. Scallops were very good, so no complaints about that. Lunch for my wife and I and our 4 yr old grandson was $57 including tip. We've spent much less at Pop's and brought enough home for a whole meal the next day.
Seriously, Topwater, try it, I think you'll like it...excellent quality all around.:liplick:
RLW, a "little close to the ground" nope..i don't get your drift.

jkjoshuatree 06-01-2011 04:54 PM

"A Little Too Close To The Ground"?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't get this. Oh well.

I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

Thanks all...Wow I didn't realize it was app 15 miles from the airport, did I misunderstand something? Oh and for the record I have no idea about the ground thing either...

jrc 06-02-2011 05:57 AM

Yes, about 15 miles from Walmart, straight down Route 11.

The food is good, the portions are huge and the prices match. I aways order too much, mainly because there usually only two of us and we like different things. Most times we order one meal and one side order, it's still too much.

BTW I'm sure you know that Sawyer's is a lot closer and just as good. Their portions are smaller, but still quite large, so you throw away less.

We still go to Pop's because we can get there by boat. Once you spend $50 on gas to get there, the food seems cheap. But gas and food are worth every penny to make that wonderful ride.

"a little close to the ground"
Can someone help me out here?

RailroadJoe 06-02-2011 09:53 AM

Dirt and dust rises.

Bigstan 06-02-2011 03:08 PM

Mere Mortals?

AC2717 06-03-2011 08:42 AM

I Confoozed about the ground????

jrc 06-03-2011 08:51 AM

It's a fish shack. Fried seafood is supposed to by eaten outside, on paper plates, with some sand blown on it, while looking at the water. (the lake will have to substitute for the ocean)

If you want tablecloths go across the street to Shibleys. Funny thing is that it will cost about the same.

sa meredith 06-03-2011 12:20 PM

Wow

My goodness....really? That's how people took the "ground" comment posted? Literally? What he post was..."close to the ground...if you get my drift".
Most certainly the ground was some type of metaphor.

RailroadJoe 06-03-2011 01:44 PM

AC2717 Its that thing are feet connect with when we walk.

Looks good!

We went tonight and ran into Sunset Bob & Sunset Ann. We had the small clam strip and small onion ring. Bottle of root beer and bottle of water. 14 bucks. We were full. I wish the camera had 3d for this picture.

Ropetow 06-03-2011 08:40 PM

The mystery deepens...

I'd just never heard "it's too close to the ground" used before.... and BH?

Sorry, I'm not trying to be dense.... I don't get it... really...:)

Rattlesnake Guy 06-03-2011 09:18 PM

How about...

Close to the ground =

Down to earth.

sa meredith 06-04-2011 11:00 AM

Mystery

So...am I the only one actually wasting time playing with letters in the word ground, and adding BH? Sorry...I love a great inside joke, but this one must be above my pay grade.
The only thing obvious to me, is that it certainly is not meant to be a compliment. Seemed like a dig from the beginning.
Close to the ground. Maybe "low class"?????
Anyway...GO BRUINS

Ummmmm....OK then. Do you think you could find a minute to explain a bit. NOONE seems to understand. Why the big secret? Just tell us what you meant.

I'll hazard a guess, here...

In September 2009, RLW pointed everyone to an earlier thread (July 2009)where a discussion took place on Pop's cleanliness. In particular, a problem with spiders.

I'll bet RLW is referrring to that. Just a guess. Although, I have no idea what BH refers to.

If Noone understands why won't he share what was meant?

upthesaukee 06-04-2011 04:53 PM

I dunno :)

But I was real close to the ground down there tonight...Clam Plate and medium onion rings (shoulda done small). Wife and I split the meal right down the middle, and we were both full. Still have some OR's that I will reheat for a snack later.

thanks Pops, great as always.

Who cares! Pop's is great!! I don't need a Rubicks cube to figure that out. Go if you like it, go somewhere else if you dont, pretty simple really...

Bh?

Just explain already - if you care to make a point you should at the least make a point that we get....

Jonas Pilot 06-05-2011 04:33 AM

SA Meredith said, "Ummmmm....OK then. Do you think you could find a minute to explain a bit. NOONE seems to understand. Why the big secret? Just tell us what you meant".

Then I said, "If Noone understands why won't he share what was meant"?

It's pretty bad when you have to explain your jokes. No one is spelled "no one". It is two words. I was joking that Noone, like in Peter Noone, is a person.
