... skunks?
 

Just noticed today that I now have two large looking, very defined black & white colored skunks, probably a male-female pair, that seem to have taken up residence underneath the open-faced firewood storage shed that's close to the property line. Having skunks living close by is not too cool! Hopefully, they can be encouraged to move a few doors along the road, and go settle into some stranger's multi-million dollar mcmansion that get's very little use. It would be moving on up for the skunk in terms of amenitites, so they should probably go for that! Maybe the skunks would be happier to settle into the vast unused wilderness at the unused girl scout camp, Camp Monotomy, and get to nibble on some old Girl Scout cookies, or something!

My plan of attack is to go soak four different 12" square cotton towel remnants in gasoline, and then toss each gasoline soaked rag onto the skunks home territory, and to do it very very fast and then get the heck away from there. Probably use a long handle garden rake for extra safety distance too, when installing the smelly gas-rags.

About ten years ago, there was a very large bright orange snake, colored with a red and yellow plaid style design in the same location, and using gasoline soaked rags seemed to encourage the snake to move on. I never saw it again..... and good-bye!

Most all animals have pretty sensitive noses, and do not appreciate the smell of gasoline.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to how I might evict these two lovey-dovey skunks before they start making little skunks?

Here is what I do when I have this problem.
I go to the nearest lawn & garden shop and ask for Fox Urine.
It usually comes with 2 or 3 small bottles with plastic ties and a cotton ball inside with a screw on top.
Put some Fox Urine inside, screw on the top and hang these bottles about 10 feet apart. (I would use rubber gloves, the urine doesn't smell to good on your hands) This will scare away unwanted pests!
It also will get rid of other creatures, so be sure to read the info on the package so you don't scare away something you like to have around.

Try that out.

Less, I heard approaching the skunks with a 2 foot stick and giving them a whack or two sends them the message that you don't want them there any more. (From the FLL book of how to solve a problem ;))

For the first time in 18 years, (two dogs), my pup, Rowdy Girl, got sprayed. I was "lucky" enough to witness the aftermath. She was scooting along the ground like a salmon going up stream. Luckily I was right there when it happened and I was able to spray her down within 5 or 7 minutes after she got anointed. She stinks a little and isn't too happy to be in "porch arrest" but it sure could have been a lot worse.

Back-Up camera! One of them will fog you just when you think that they can't!.. Now, most of us are pull'in for yah, but should you get skunked, you're on your own! Wise?? :laugh: :look:

I always seem to get a family of skunks that take up under my front deck. I see them almost every night. Never noticed any real smell. Never seem to spray near where they live. They always give me a wide berth and I always do the same for them. No sense stinking myself up if I can help it.
Only real issues is my wife and I come home late some nights and if I forget to leave the light on outside it is kind of tense walking down the walk to the door.

My son had a problem with a family of skunks living under his deck. They came out every night at dusk. My husband and he sat a distance away, waited for them to leave, and put screening under there so they couldn't return. That might help for your wood pile, if you don't plan to move the screening for a few weeks.

I used the spray type under the hood of my wife's Rav4 which was getting filled with acorns everyday. (Well inside the hood anyway.) And have not seen any chipmunks at all this year, since using it. Must work....:D

Oh and it does not smell too bad either, like some of those products tend to.:eek:

Don't know if this is really true, but the sports sales guy at Plymouth Walmart said that the Tilton Walmart is once again, after about five year's vacancy, selling shotguns. It could be worth a ride down to the Exit 20 Walmart to go window shopping for something like a Mossberg 12-guage in camoflage dress for $94.94.....just maybe? With some type of buckshot, that could be just the ticket for discouraging the skunks.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but supposedly NH allows for most residents 18 & up, who have no felony convictions or other restrictions like domestic violence, to legally possess and use a skunk hunting shotgun. Am not too sure about shooting one off in a residential area what with various neighbors close by?

They really are nice, friendly critters... as long as you don't surprise them. It would certainly add to the eccentricity of you, which might hold some appeal. :D ;) :laugh:

We'd have to come up with a new clever name for you...

No shotgun solution
 

Not sure what the actual footage is in NH, but most states have a minimum # of feet you may not shoot a firearm from an occupied dwelling. If you can throw your broom from your intended area of firing and hit your house or your neighbor's it is illegal.

I have no idea if the gasoline soaked rags have actually worked to get the skunks to move along? Have not been down in Meredith for the last few days too much so I don't know, and I'm just daydream'n out loud about using a shotgun....although isn't a shotgun the tool that a farmer uses to protect his growing crops from crows and the like .... like a fox around a chicken coop.

At least one little skunkie had to have unloaded its smell underneath the shed possibly in response to the gas rag? That smell was really powerfull.....like it was alive with energy or something .. note the past tense WAS as opposed to IS....and hopefully those black & white cuties have decided to move on...

I never use to see skunks in Moultonborough when I was growing up, but we had them around our home in Bedford, NH. Now I see them in Moultonborough. We had one in our yard this past evening.
