Lake Temp

Noticed that the lake temp went up to 36degrees on February 1st. Last year this did not happen until March 24th. What will this info ultimately mean for ice out?????

Bear Island South 02-03-2012 09:52 PM

you can bet it will be much earlier ;)

fatlazyless 02-04-2012 06:24 AM

Not having anything better to do, and being totally bored out of my mind, I've been phoning the 603-527-0071 Lakeport Dam at the one & only Lake Winnipesaukee outflow down in Laconia lately to get the water temp at the dam. It's a free call which makes it much less expensive than one of those 1-900 phone numbers you know ......

Wednesday, Feb 1 ........ 36-degrees

Thursday, Feb 2 ........... 36-degrees

Friday, Feb 3 ............... 35-degrees

Saturday, Feb 4 ........... today, not recorded yet

Today, Feb 4, it is probably again, just like yesterday, hanging at 35 since the air temp got a little colder last couple days?????

Will go take a look at the "PH D. of weather webcams", the Black Cat Island weather cam, www.blackcatnh.com to get an in-depth education on water temperatures!

meredith weekender 02-04-2012 07:05 AM

In 2010 the lake hit 36 degrees in mid to late February and ice out was March 24th. As well, the lake typically settles in at 34degrees during ice inane that never happened this year. It will be an interesting one to see this year.

Ice out

I think I am gonna go to Marine Headquarters on the 20th to get my boat registration. It got messed up in the mail and the cost has disappeared. But with Ice out coming early perhaps I should get the boat early. I wonder if I get it early will I get a rebate on unused storage?:rolleye2:

Took this today from Major. Notice the open water near rattlesnake the picture doesn't do justice. I would estimate the opening to be 75-100 wide also another opening off welch.

Great Picture, thanks for sharing.

robmac 02-05-2012 07:40 AM

Looks to me like spring is starting, keep opening up that gap. ICE OUT can't come quick enough for me.

upthesaukee 02-05-2012 11:08 AM

Looks like another lead

Looks like another on a line from R. I. to Parker Island, which seems to be smaller in size. Looks like the same dark color as the larger one.

meredith weekender 02-06-2012 12:03 PM

The Lakeport Dam is reporting that the water temp is holding at 36 degrees. This weeks warm weather will only help. Praying foir an early ice out.:D

Rattlesnake Gal 02-09-2012 11:11 AM

Current Lake Temp

According to Lake Winnipesaukee Weather Cam:

Water Temperature at 2 ft: 35.2 °F

Water Temperature at 10 ft: 37.4 °F

I just might get my wish for an early ice-out! :D Can't wait to get back to the island.

meredith weekender 02-09-2012 11:42 AM

Lakeport is reporting water temps at 36 degrees still with no downward fluctuation. Looking at the Downings cams in Alton is even showing alot of open water. Praying for an early ice out. :D

meredith weekender 02-13-2012 12:41 PM

Even with the COLD temperatures, Lakeport is still reporting the water temp at 36 degrees and it hit 37 degrees last Saturday.

Now that the Derby is over, lets get to spring. :)

fatlazyless 02-14-2012 12:42 PM

.....umm....not having anything better to do....and being bored out of my mind....I made a very scientific survey of this website's lake water temperature records and compared the water temperature for 2011 verses 2012.

Ok.....so what's up with this?

In 2011, the Lake Winnipesaukee water temp hovered at its' recorded low of 34-degrees for a total of about 54-days spread across January-February-March, from aproximately January 8 to March 9, 2011!

In 2012, the Lake Winnipesaukee water temp hovered at its' recorded low of 34-degrees for a total of just two days on January 15 and January 16, 2012!

Now, you know........ my-my-my.......that's seems like a biggggg difference.......and how about that! .. :D

meredith weekender 02-14-2012 03:22 PM

What is even more interesting FLL is that the LakePort Dam is reporting that we hit 37 degrees again today. In 2011 we hit 35 degrees on 02/28 then back to 34 degrees until 03/12, then 36 degrees on 03/24 and finally 37 degrees on 04/08/2011. We seem to be 54 days ahead of last year.

Chaos 02-14-2012 08:24 PM

Maybe it's the new math?:rolleye2:

meredith weekender 02-16-2012 06:58 PM

The water temp is holding at 37 degrees :):):). Hopefully we are moving in the right direction. My goal is to have the boat in by 03/15.

Spring Summer bugs

Does anyone know what the water temp has to be for mosquito and black fly larvae to hatch and can we hope that they get confused, hatch early and then freeze to death????

Merrymeeting 02-17-2012 02:20 PM

I hope that every year but it doesn't happen :(

As with the trees and plants, I'm sure it's a combination of temp, sunlight, and some other magic potion that insures they will hatch at just the right time to bring maximum discomfort to all!

In this case -- I'm really looking forward to the Ides of March. Was a bad day for Caesar.... but -- if he'd gone out on the lake he would have been in better shape. Can't get out there walking, and don't have a hovercraft... Bring on March 15th! :)

meredith weekender 02-21-2012 12:05 PM

The water temp is holding steady at 37degrees, been trhat way for over a week now. Definitely a sign that we are moving in the right direction:). Would love to see some aerials after the warmth that is coming over the next few days.

John A. Birdsall 02-21-2012 12:20 PM

ice

Well, I went to the lake at Alton Bay I would say at least 15 bob houses on the lake, (some looked like outhouses) I noticed water basically surrounding the ice and would think that they did not have much time left to remove. While the temp was 33 degrees during the day it must have gotten colder when the sun went down, so maybe.. It was a beautiful day but I did not think, the marine patrol was closed and I got to do this by snail mail. to get my boat registered.

I heard the lake making noises yesterday. Groans and it sounded also like cracking. That was up near Echo Point. To think two years ago I took my truck on the ice but not this year.

Black Cat Island Weather Center is showing:

Water Temperature at 10 ft: 38.8 °F

Come on ice-out!

meredith weekender 02-22-2012 11:03 AM

Lakeport id reporting a water temp of 38 degrees today:D. If this temp holds it will definitely be an EARLY ice out:)

fatlazyless 02-23-2012 07:42 AM

And, the winnipesaukee data phone, (603) 527-0071, which posts at 7:30 in the morning, has today's lake water temp down at the dam outflow to be measured at an INCREDIBLY WARM 38 toasty degrees once again.......my-my-my......should we be expecting all the lake ice to be going all-slushy sometime soon......or will the winter weather be doing a major flip-flop and return to a deep freeze.....?????? .......only time can tell.....and time doesn't talk very much.....hhhmmmmmmm!

If I remember correct, my ice contest lake ice-out date pick is March 5 which is starting to look like it might be the WINNER!

Thankyou, and goodnight, and have you ever tried using beer instead of milk with your breakfast shredded wheat? ......it's actually very good!

meredith weekender 02-25-2012 11:01 AM

Holding steady at 38degrres:D. Hoping this wind is going help out as well.

meredith weekender 02-29-2012 08:07 PM

The dropped to 37 degrees and has been there for the last 4 days. Definitely depressing:(. Think we all need to unplug our circulators ad drop in a bunch of fish tank heaters :laugh:

Merrymeeting 03-01-2012 08:09 AM

Certainly won't be March 5th. Take a look at the forcasted lows for that night! Though it will warm up after that.

The ice actually grew a bit in areas this week given the cold nights. But I'm sure the warmer temperatures underneath are still eating away at things. Overall, a net no change.

It'll be interesting to see how the snow layer affects things. On one hand, it seems it will provide insulation that will allow the warmer water below to eat away at the ice faster. But on the other, it will stop the sun from heating up the water through the ice on sunny days.

meredith weekender 03-12-2012 06:42 AM

As of the this morning the Lakeport Dam is reporting that the water temp is still holding at 37 degrees:(. I for one will be very anxious to see where the temp is next Monday after a week of above normal temps with some above freezing nights.

Lakesrider 03-12-2012 12:54 PM

Driving by Mirror Lake this morning and yesterday afternoon it is starting to look a darker gray than a few days ago. Maybe?

Noticed a darker gray finger stretching out into Wolfeboro bay as well. Looks sort of like a gray river heading out.....

fatlazyless 03-13-2012 06:51 AM

39-degrees

39-degrees......just phoned the Lakeport Dam 527-0071 at 7:40am, and the recorded message says water temp at the dam outflow is 39-degrees.

As far as surviving an accidental plunge into icy cold water......did you know that an individual can survive up to 15-minutes in the icy cold water, over one's head, before losing body control....as long as you survive the initial plunge without gasping in a lot of water....if you ever fall overboard.....simply hold your hand over your mouth to avoid the water gasp syndrome that can cause a drowning in about one very painfull choking, gasping minute.....cough....cough....cough.....

fatlazyless 03-20-2012 04:34 AM

...say-hey....yesterday's March 19 reading at the dam outflow is shown 40.......the big 4-0- ............o m g ..... :fire: the sun monster is definately b-a-c-k !!!!

meredith weekender 03-21-2012 09:11 AM

water temp is 41 degrees:):):) at the lakeport Dam as of this am. The boat is being launched next Friday the 30th. Happy day, Happy day :D:D:D

Must be all that COLD rain and HAIL (during the big thunder storm) we had last week! And the cold nights (and not too warm days) haven's helped either.

IslandPrincess went in for a dip 2 weeks ago. Brrrrrrr!!!! I stayed safely on shore :D

Slickcraft 06-21-2012 11:02 AM

Tuesday morning we measured a temp profile down to 10 meters at a deep site between Governors and Timber. From the surface down to 5 meters (16.4 feet) it was a constant 20.4 degrees C or 68.7 F. It has to be warmer today.

The water temperature monitor is malfunctioning. It may need to be replaced.

My thermometer is reading 73° at my dock at Rattlesnake Island.

Merrymeeting 06-21-2012 08:51 PM

I have a temp probe mounted about 3' down under my dock. It sends a wireless signal to my weater base. On Tuesday morning, it was showing 69.5. Now Thursday night, 78.2!

That's quite a change in a bit over 48 hours!

Quite a significant change! Was someone swimming close by when you took the reading?! ;)

Greene's Basin Girl 06-22-2012 07:54 AM

The water temperature was 80 degrees in Green's Basin yesterday.

Resident 2B 06-22-2012 08:25 AM

With the hot air, low wind, the strongest sun of the year and the high dew point rapid warming of the top 3 to 5 feet of water is to be expected. All the ambient conditions favored this.

When the front passes later today, the warm water near the surface will mix down some. The water at the very surface will lose heat due to cooler air and much lower dew point. However, the lake has gained a lot of heat the last few days and will retain most of it. :)

Enjoy it while it is here!

Last Monday we measured a temp profile at a deep site between Governors and Timber. It was a constant 24.8 deg centigrade, about 76.6 F, down to 8.5 meters, about 27.9 feet. The thermocline was at about 30 feet depth.

We are always amazed at how well mixed the water is down to the thermocline depth.

All of the wind of the past few days coupled with cool night temps have probably caused the lake temperature to drop.

Does anyone know when, traditionally, the high temp occurs?

Believe the surface temp has reached 80 maybe once in the last twenty years ..... sometime like 1999 .... when the water level was very low in August.
