Building a Winnipesaukee Themed Man Cave : Need Ideas

Ok, this is partially true. Its going to be 1/2 Tropical, 1/2 Winni.

Recently moved to Florida and am buying a house down here. Wifey (God I live her) says the 20x20 garage is mine.

I work from home, so a section will be dedicated to a few PC's, shipping supplies & product. I am a reseller on eBay.

That said, 1/2 the garage will have a Lake Winnipesaukee theme. This is where your guys and gals come in.

We have spent countless summer vacations for years. We love the area. If money ever affords it, we would be snowboards and stay in Meredith.

I know I can source things on eBay and from local merchants, but I need ideas. Looking to go more the wall decor way. Posters, photos, etc. Not much for floor accents. Still working on the layout so I am open to things.

Thoughts?

winnisummergal 03-14-2012 07:37 PM

all things Winni

Jason,

I have decorated one of my guest rooms in Winni theme. Here are a few of the things I have:

Aerial photo 20 x 30" framed photo of Wolfeboro in the fall
Bizer lake chart framed as wall art
replica of 1933 Chris Craft 24" model
photo of Swallow's boat house framed
large oar that says "Boat House"
Various photos of friends and family at the lake framed
Lake Winnipesaukee sign
Life if better at the lake sign
Photos of Brewster Academy and Goodhue & Hawkins

I think you get the idea... lol!

Jeanzb1 03-15-2012 07:58 AM

Where in Florida are you? We're on the Treasure Coast. When you finish your Winni man cave, we'll come see it! No one loves the lake more than we do! Counting down the days till we're outta here and head north.....:)

Peter Ferber prints

How about some Peter Ferber Antique Boat show posters? They are available from the Art Store in Wolfeboro and also through the Weirs Times.

Wife and I would love to be snowboard to lake winni. Perhaps in the future. If it wasnt cold up there 8/12 months we would have moved up there

Get a mural from http://www.muralsyourway.com/my-image/ and get it to be a sunset pic over the lake.

Then do the bar like a dock and set up Adirondack chairs. Instant winni!

How about a wooden boat transom from a local boat restoration company with Lake Winnipesaukee on it

I like them but they are $150 starting. Worth it prob, but seems a bit much.

Why not just back a boat into the garage?:D

JasonG 03-16-2012 09:30 AM

No boat...yet

gtxrider 03-16-2012 12:50 PM

ideas

1. A stuffed loon
2. Recording of the Mount Washington horn.
3. Framed lake map
4. Stuffed rock bass
5. Signed picture of FLL

Grant 03-16-2012 03:14 PM

You're gonna need a mounted rock bass on the wall. :D

(Linger longer...)

(Edit: Sorry, after posting, I noticed that gtxrider beat me to the rock bass reference.)

Grant 03-16-2012 03:37 PM

Haha...reading this thread and realized that I have something of a WinniCave cooking in my office at work.
  • On the walls: Lake map, two Ferber prints (Camp Belknap Centennial and Mailboat Arriving at Wawbeek).
  • Bulletin board: Various family shots from the Lake & mountain hikes, and two old NH boat license plates.
  • Desk: two lake rocks from our shore, and two antique bottles and piece of pottery from dives, and a small pewter loon from Hampshire Pewter.
  • Side of filing cabinet: a mini GRANT NH vanity plate magnet from Black's, and a DIVE WINNIPESAUKEE bumper sticker.
  • Windowsill: 5 of the 7 photos there were taken on the lake, on one of the White Mountains, or at Chocorua Lake.

I think that's it. Now I'm looking around me...never realized there was so much. My co-workers probably wonder why I'm sitting here.

MAXUM 03-17-2012 09:09 AM

You absolutely need to have a collection of old NH boat license plates.

I have a whole stack of them from when I was growing up, someday if I ever get a camp on the lake (still looking for cheap island property, hint hint for anyone thinking of selling) those will be proudly displayed on the wall. In the mean time they are hanging on the wall in my man cave.

no-engine 03-17-2012 02:02 PM

You can also obtain the Boat Show themed posters at Hawkins Gallery on Main Street, Meredith.
They also have a beautiful panorama image of Meredith Bay. As well as his custom photography and copies of old postcards of Lake scenes.
They do very creative custom framing; we once saw an old recycled window with multiple panels that were window panels (6 over six language) where different card were inserted.

Good luck ~ an interesting project....

Blow up poster of the Old Man three cent postage stamp.

No, not Winni per se, but what better epitomizes NH?

I want to do this, but cut it out of regular wood. Life size. However I know nothing of wooden boats. I would like to follow the traditional chris craft design.

Googling this just sends me all kinds of designs.

Does anyone know the shape specs?

Is this mahogany? Is there a less expensive wood that looks as good?

What is the stain/paint type?

Lettering. I often see Gold Lettering on the back. Almost looks like gold leaf. What is this?

I found this company, but a bit much for the size

Hi JasonG,

May I suggest you visit the 'Winnipesaukee.com Store; http://www.winnipesaukee.com/index.php?pageid=store

You could frame a nice Bizer Lake chart, to dress up the place, inexpensive too! There are some other trinkets available that you may be interested in as well.
Good luck!

Winnipesaukee Themed Items

If it is something wooden, contact Jo of Red Cranberries. They used to have a store in Alton. Their website is under construction, but you should be able to contact them for a quote on this page. They are amazing artists!!! Ask McDude, he'll tell you the same. (He might have an e-mail if their site doesn't work.)

You might find some pictures in our very own PhotoPost Gallery that you might like to have printed, enlarged etc. If you find one you like and it isn't big enough, e-mail the member. There is a lot of talent to be found.

Dot Photo does amazing posters. They also do Vinyl Cutouts, which I have not yet done.

I like Shutterfly for coasters. They allow a different picture for each one.

ArtsCow offers many other options like blankets too. Most of these sites will send you e-mails with sales and specials. I did a lot of ceramic ornaments through this site. I have been very tempted with the custom umbrella.

Good luck and be sure to share pictures of your finished Winnipesaukee Man Cave with us!

I was thinking of using an image from the gallery. Problem is they are not big enough for good resolution when blown up.

That is the part of having to contact the member that posted it via e-mail. ;) Most of us scale down our pictures for ease of uploading.

Or, you could order a brand-new transom from these folks:

Play "Loon Chorus"

Jason, how about downloading the "Loon Chorus" that CLA uploaded to youtube back in 2008. You could set up a scheduled "task" on the PC to play it every couple of hours. It runs 3:45.

Man Cave ideas...

At Black's Paper and Gift Shop (603-569-4444) in Wolfeboro they sell signboards of different locations around the Lake with the appropriate longitude and latitude, i.e.,"Camp Wyanoke Lat 43.5812 Long -71.2587". I have seen many of the islands, towns, and points of interest represented, and I am pretty sure they could order from their supplier any particular sign you wanted.

They also sell coasters and smaller versions of the signboards, not to mention a lot of other Lake oriented artifacts.

These Lake Winni Pennants will look great on your walls!

JasonG 04-03-2013 03:02 PM

Well this popped back up. Thanks for the additional ideas.
Working and owning a house has kept me busy so I am just looking at a 5 foot by 4 foot framed antique poster of Meredith Bay

Another Winni reminder

Place a 45mph speed limit sign on the garage door....

....preferably, with a few bullet holes in it, first!

ushaggerb 04-10-2013 11:26 PM

Try going in reverse

Sell the house in Florida, move to the Lake, and you can have a section in your garage dedicated to Florida.

Orion 04-14-2013 03:42 PM

good one

The wife wants to move back to Mass because she misses her family. I am all for it is we move to the lakes region. It is the one place I would live and deal with the cold.

Misty Blue 04-21-2013 11:09 AM

I want one...

Jason:

Our good friend Bizer has a bitch'n 4' by 8' Bizer chart (he calls it a map) of the Lake. Everyone has a normal size chart on the living room wall. But this one is a real eye catcher. You can even put other Lake items on it!

If I had the wall space I would plant one in my man cave.

BTW My "man cave" is full of laundry, washer/dryer and baby toys. The "man cave" sign was put there by my girls in a poor attempt to comfort me.

Haven't you seen the new locks they installed over the winter? Just like the Panama canal. You maneuver your boat into the first lock and the gate closes behind you then the water level rises and at that point your above ground level, hence the 0' elevation. You have got to get out more SIK.
