Paugus Bay Marina On Fire

Just got word that paugus bay marina is on fire?

chillininnh 05-28-2012 03:20 PM

I believe the fire was contained to the brick outbuilding located directly behind the main storage building. Hopefully everyone got out alright.

Many thanks to the Laconia Fire Dept. and other departments assisting in this fire. They minimized the potential damage that this blaze could have caused!

LACONIA — Fire officials are still investigating the cause of a blaze which caused extensive damage to a storage building at Paugus Bay Marina in Lakeport Monday afternoon.
The fire broke out around 2:45 p.m. and quickly engulfed the building in flames, sending thick black smoke into the sky and attracting a crowd of boats to the foot of Paugus Bay.
Firefighters initially sought to protect boats which were parked near the building and in the marina's main storage facility, which is located only a hundred or so feet away from the older brick building.
No boats were in the facility according to marina owner Kevin Keenan, who said that there were mainly floats stored inside.
Keenan said the fire apparently started as a brush fire near the railroad tracks at the rear of the building.
He said that firefighters did an excellent job in bringing the fire under control and preventing it from damaging the boats stored outside.
Firefighters responded to the scene after seeing thick black smoke in the air as they started to return from extinguishing a brush fire along the WOW Trail where is crosses Moulton Street, to the rear of the NAPA Auto parts building.
No one was injured in the blaze.

Sounds like no boats were involved.
This statement from LaDaSun should bring back some discussion on that WOW trail thread though:

If it was arson, I hope they catch the culprit and prosecute them to the maximum sentence possible! The owners of Paugus Bay Marina run a fine business and people work hard to afford a watercraft to enjoy with their families...

WMUR Reports Fire was Arson

Laconia arsons believed to be linked
Fire destroys marina storage garage
UPDATED 1:39 PM EDT May 29, 2012

Same person believed responsible for Laconia fires
LACONIA, N.H. -

Investigators said a fire that destroyed a storage garage at a Laconia marina Monday was intentionally set, and they said it wasn't the first arson in town that day.
Paugus Bay Marina

Police said they have identified a person of interest in the case, but there have been no arrests.

Fire Chief Kenneth Erickson said the fire at Paugus Bay Marina had the potential to damage millions of dollars' worth of boats. Marina owner Kevin Keenan said he was lucky the fire didn't spread beyond the garage.

"No boats were damaged," he said. "The fire was contained to this building, and it could have very easily caught some boats on fire. Who knows where that would have gone?"

The fire at the marina was reported just before 3 p.m. Monday. Forty-five minutes earlier, firefighters were fighting a fire in some woods behind Moulton Street, about a half mile from the marina.

"This fire was started in the woods behind the building," Erickson said. "The back wall of this old building was made out of old asphalt shingles, and once it came up through the woods to the asphalt shingles, it ripped up through the back of the building."

Erickson said the fire in the Moulton Street area was also intentionally set, and investigators believe the same person was responsible for both.

Firefighters responding to the marina had to deal with hot weather and explosions from 55-gallon drums of motor oil stored in the garage. The building, which was built around 1900, helped protect firefighters from shrapnel.

"The firefighters were keeping a fairly safe distance," Erickson said. "Fortunately, the building walls were about 18 inches thick, so when the tanks did blow, they stayed within the confines of the building."

About 50 feet away from the burning garage was a storage warehouse packed with boats worth millions of dollars. The chief said firefighters' first priority was to protect the neighboring houses and the warehouse.

They need to catch these arsonists, before someone gets killed. Paugus Bay Marina is run by great people.

I am sure you didn't mean it to sound this way, but....
If the Paugus Bay Marina was run by not-so-good people, would it still be important to catch the arsonists?

LadyoftheLake 05-29-2012 11:59 PM

Chipj29,

You are right, I did not mean that it would be ok for arsonist to target bad people.

Paugus Bay Marina has been taking care of my boat for many years and I am very happy with them. :)

The report states that there were other fires set. That is interesting, because, I was across Paugus Bay when my 12 year old son saw the smoke from the fire, and I thought it was someone burning their brush, then the fire began to grow, and the fire trucks were responding. I also remember seeing another fire very close, just up the Bay, about an hour before the Paugus Bay Marina fire. So, that could have been set by the same person.

I do hope that catch that person very soon.
