Like it or not, it has a great history. Please don't ruin this thread with negativity. Start you're own thread for that. I wish I could have been a witness to the early races at Gunstock. Some of those early daredevils must have been something. They came back from the craziness of wars afar and wanted to find some more thrills back home.

Motorcycle Week
 

There will be no negativity from me. I do not know the history of Motorcycle Week. I have listened to the drone of the distant bikes circling the lake all my life. I never knew their history. I guess you could say that I am young and I am old.
I was happily sheltered in a cove once upon a time but now I am not. I feel that I am in the open big waters of the lake now. It is a new lifetime and I have alot to learn. So thank you for the head's up about the show tomorrow night. I will be watching.

Keep an open mind and enjoy.

Gunstock
 

I was able to see the hillclimbs at Gunstock when I was a kid many times.
However, the thing i remember the most is when my parents told me and my brother to get on the floor, (car) and dont look outside when we entered the Gilford area.
That was a much different bike weekend. Yes back then it was just a weekend.

wish I could get this in MA, I do not get WMUR, and CHronicle in MA, would it be the same as the one in NH?

Grew up in Laconia/Gilford
 

I can remember the original Gypsies. They would camp out in the woods in the back of the farm. They were very nice people. They actually travel with family, great cooking in which they share with us, and the entertainment of folks music in the evening. That was in my mind the highlights of Bike Weekend.

It was a lot quieter in the beginning but grew into a big show during the 60's to what it is today. The gypsies no longer participate even though the week is called the Gypsy tour.

Even today, I enjoy the events during the week.

Yes, it was quite a show! After the '65 riot, things changed. Not a lot though.

The Hell's Angel's in the in the 1960's tried to roll over my parents car. My sister had borrowed the car for the evening. They had gone to the Weirs to see the motorcyclists. She and her friends were very scared. They still talk about it every year during motorcycle week.

As a young boy in the early sixties staying with my mother up the camp in gilmanton every summer from 1952 thru 1970 I witness alot of bike weeks. And I can remeber my mother being terrified of all the bikers camping all over the place, around the small Sawyer lake and on the sides of 107 and everywhere else. I thought it was really cool. I remember one year, my father had a volkswagon beetle around 1961 or so we were getting ready to get out of the car infront of the big brick church in laconia and a large group of bikers had stopped at the traffic light, some got off their bikes and walked over to another beetle parked a few spaces infront of us and lifted it up and rolled it over. Needless to say we did not attend mass that day.
Years later, I had a BSA Lightning and started attending the races in loudon when it was just a racetrack and woods, and you pay one price for the weekend, maybe 20. and camp in the woods and have a wonderful, memorable weekend.
I think it's all these memories that have kept me on 2 wheels since, I have traveled all over the country and motorcyclist have evolved over the years to a more civilized sort. But there's a liitle bit of rebel in all of us.

OMG, that was your parent's car??? They had chains and everything. I think the National Guard was called and they cleared the street.

I think the Weirs should have a booth for these, then the paranoid parents of the world would be all set... :laugh::laugh:
