iPad app
Has anyone had experience with the iPad / iPhone app for the lake. Was thinking of trying it for $34.99 vs. buying a new gps.
Thanks ! |
not bad

The cost is much higher than most apps but much lower than a new GPS. However i still use my GPS and use the phone app when i am in someone else's boat |
I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong but I find that the iPad doesn't refresh well. As my heading changes I'm left with black areas as the map rotates. Doesn't seem to happen on the iPhone.

I assume you need to have the iPad with 3G service?
|
BINGO !!
Two things to consider-- (1) you must have reasonable cell coverage (2) Any GPS App burns the battery life of the device like crazy I'm sticking with my Garmin and $10 downloaded map of the lake |
I agree with Phantom.
I use my 'droid once. 3G coverage is spotty and my battery was dead within and hour! I will stick with my Garmin and $10 map. |

I was thinking of trying Garmin's $10 map, but then I read the differences between the Bizer map and others:
http://www.bizer.com/jrcompar.htm Even if half of those differences are true, the $90 difference will probably save me a lot in repairs. ;) Perhaps for the $10, I may try the Garmin map to see if there is a real difference that I can detect. I do wish that Garmin would allow me to install multiple maps on one SD card and select them from a menu. But if I can get a Garmin $10 file, I'll compare it to the Bizer and let you know how different it is. |
Map
I use my IPhone and Google Maps........GPS works killer and I navigate quite welll and its 100 Percent free.. I have Verizon Cell broadband..

When you're comparing, also look at the area north of Eagle Island; the north side of Timber Island; Look how deep they say the water is on the west side of Wolfeboro Neck; etc. |
Great App - No Cell Coverage Needed
This is a great app and doesn't need cell coverage. I use this app primarily with my iPad 2 which is the 3G version but I don't subscribe to the wireless plan (this version has in internal GPS which is required). Also works great on my iPhone 4S which does have cell service. Note that the entire map is resident on the application so it doesn't need a connection to render (unlike Google Maps) so you don't need cell coverage.
At $35 it's the most expensive app I've purchased yet... but by far the most useful. |
Last night was the supreme test for the iPhone with the winni app Bizer version. We bought the app hoping that it would help us when we get disoriented at night (it happens eventhough know the route). We also bought a gps unit that plugs in to the iPhone as we weren't getting accurate readings from the cell phone tower. The gps is made by Bad Elf and it reads from the gps satellites.
Well, it was rainy and dark last night and we did get off course. The app worked perfectly and reoriented us. What you see on the screen is a small boat (you) as it moves along the Bizer chart. |
