changing a boats name
Hi All
I have a question to ponder. A good friend just purchased a used boat that has a name ..Is it bad karma for them to change it to there liking or is that just an old wives tale? |
Have a preist
Christen the boat with her new name to ward off the devil.
|
It's probably just and old wive's tale, but we bought an antique and didn't change the name. But if I really didn't like the name, and it was my choice alone, I think I would change it and not worry. How superstitious are you?
|
Make sure the boat is not coast guard registered under the existing name. If so and you care about being cg registered (documented) you can file an amendment.
|
if you google it, there is a whole ritual to renaming a boat, to make sure you get the bad juju and gremlins off

changing a boats name
Thanks to you all who responded with great answers. I did Google it and found some great tips. I will pass these articles along to my friend. No I am not superstitious but the subject came up and i thought to use this forum to get the answers!!:)

As I understand the "rules" of it, you can change the boat's name without insulting the boat/Neptune if you do it shortly after aquiring it. After that, you are "supposed to" throw a party and offer sacfrifices of liquor to the boat/water gods.
Juat be careful not to offend your real God. ;) |
If You need to sacrifice some vodka, you can send it my way. Lol.
|
I heard it is bad luck to change the name of an already named boat. But if you are not a superstitious person then go for it.
|
You could change the name to: "Looking For Trouble". :look: NB
PS: I believe the Original name of the Titanic was rumored to have been Gigantic. EDIT: NOPE: The Gigantic became the Britannic...all three..sisterships of the White Star Line. |

Some pirates thought ...
... It’s bad luck to change the name of a boat. but if you have to: write the soon-to-be-exorcised name on a piece of paper, fold the paper, and place it in a small cardboard or wooden box. Burn the box. Scoop up the ashes and throw them into the sea on an outgoing tide. If you live on a lake, do it at night and only during a new moon. River dwellers should send the ashes downstream.

well, i guess you better leave the name alone, bad luck is bad luck.
|
I do not want my life surrounded by bad luck. I am glad I bought a new boat. I can name it anything I want. What a relief!!!!!

adding a name???
what about adding a name to a boat with no current name?? i am original owner, but it's 9 years old...anything to worry about there??? i have the perfect name picked out and everything...just need to pull the trigger...IF...no bad luck involved. reading above...i guess i can have a party, get drunk and call it good????

Blessing new names
Perhaps we can arrange to have a blessing of newly named boats (from their former names) at the next Forum Fest....speaking of which, when will that be??????

It is not bad luck to change the name of a newly acquired boat. It is bad luck and unproper to change the name of a boat that you already own. This was settled in one of the yachting magazines after much debate.
