Scared the #$*&* out of us here in West Alton, thought that maybe the furnace blew up.

Rusty 10-16-2012 06:42 PM

Should be some after shocks from this one.

Could be less, but there have been instances when they were worse that the main shock.

Coastal Laker 10-16-2012 06:52 PM

WMUR reported on it...

Just a few minutes after it happened, WMUR had a news flash on it. They will have more of an update shortly. Website doesn't say much. My sister in Bowdoin, ME felt her house shake pretty good too.

Water Camper 10-16-2012 07:03 PM

Felt here in Pembroke NH

Sitting on the couch watching the tube. Big rumble and then the couch started shaking. Thought the furnace was blowing up! Lamp beside me was actually moving. Hubby's band was rehearsing in the cellar and they didn't feel a thing. They thought I was joking when I went down to see if they felt it too. Biggest one I've ever experienced in my lifetime in NH.

garysanfran 10-16-2012 07:05 PM

Only 4.6?

For me, living in San Fran, this was a very small quake but different. It lasted long and the noise was different. New England granite plates grinding.

The Loma Prieta in '89 in San Fran was so intense I watched a woman in a computer chair on wheels go all the way across a 20' room and slam into the wall and every right angle in the interior walls went from obtuse to acute then back to normal. Not a chance I would have been able to walk across that room.

Check your gas lines and foundation. There may be aftershocks.

Lakesrider 10-16-2012 07:10 PM

Did I just feel an aftershock?

Acrossamerica 10-16-2012 07:15 PM

At my age I guess that is one way to get the earth to move under my feet.

SteveA 10-16-2012 07:23 PM

I'm in Atlanta.. and I felt it! :rolleye1: :) when my son called from home rattled the house in Gilford.

They are calling it 4.0

Now that there was funny..... I got married on the beach in Hawaii during the Tsunami back in 2010...

AC2717 10-16-2012 08:11 PM

felt here in Boston, stuff fell off the counter, started at one end of the house and worked its way through the house. crazy, time to buy some earthquake insurance while it is extremly cheap:D

jazzman 10-16-2012 08:31 PM

Shook really good here on Big Barndoor... It was almost 2 independent events over the course of 5 seconds. I don't have a furnace, so I was pretty sure it was an earthquake, or the whole town of Wolfeboro had blown up.

GTO 10-16-2012 08:35 PM

here too

felt it and heard it here in Nashua. First thought it was wind and then thought it was a truck or low flying plane. My wife was in the kitchen and I said I think we just had an earthquake and she thought I was crazy (well, thats up for discussion anyways). Within seconds, a neighbor called and said their house shook and it was already breaking news. That was my 2nd one. The first one I felt years ago in Chelmsford and the center I bieeive was in Meredith

AussieDog 10-16-2012 08:39 PM

Felt it here in Gilmanton. At first I thought it was big truck going by. I guess not.

dayvsea 10-16-2012 09:04 PM

Anyone have any damages? I've already closed, and am worried about chimney and such..

Newbiesaukee 10-16-2012 10:17 PM

Just had my furnace repaired; thought it had blown up!

upthesaukee 10-16-2012 11:58 PM

Alton...felt it strongly.

We were at a Masonic meeting. We finished eating and went into the Lodge room at 7. Around 710, lots of noise and shaking, reminiscent of my years in Alaska...I did go down stairs to make sure that it wasn't the kitchen that had blown up...our kitchen crew was eating after serving us and were blaming it on several politicians trying to make their respective points. No damage. back to the meeting, and NOBODY SLAM ANY DOORS!!!!

It's been almost ten years! :eek2:

In 2003, The Old Man was probably "done-in" by a small earthquake—one that most Lakes Region folks missed because of the early hour:

April 20, 2002
An unusually strong earthquake was felt across the Northeast United States and parts of Canada early Saturday morning, rattling residents and buckling roads in the region of the epicenter. No injuries or deaths have been reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake, setting the preliminary magnitude at 5.1 -- capable of causing considerable damage. It was centered 15 miles southwest of Plattsburgh, New York. According to the USGS, the quake happened at 6:50 a.m.

When you live at higher elevations (NH's hillsides) expect to be more strongly affected. :look:

My mom and son didn't feel a thing in Nashua but others felt it much further south. She lives in a condo on the hill at the end of exit 8.
What got me was our 4 dogs didn't even bark or flinch before or during the quake.

Janet 10-17-2012 05:28 AM

Here's a coincidence - a 2.7 earthquake was reported at 9:57 pm south of Dallas last night.

Altonbayicefishingfool 10-17-2012 05:57 AM

We didn't feel it in the ballroom of the Crowne Plaza in Nashua. Several folks got calls from kids at home, but until those calls we had no idea.

SAMIAM 10-17-2012 02:04 PM

Having dinner at the Lake House in Meredith and we got one big jolt......only a second or two. Got home and our wall mount TV had shifted. No damage, though.

Smith Point 10-17-2012 09:30 PM

I was up stairs in the bedroom celebrating eight years of mirage with my beautiful bride and I said did you feel that! She said I didn’t feel a thing! But I’m pretty sure I caused the earthquake.

GTO 10-18-2012 09:59 AM

So...was it a marriage of 8 years or a "mirage" of 8 years....becasue if it was the later, it just means you were upstairs by yourself. Not something you want everyone to know

You might feel a backhand if she reads that your marriage is a mirage.
