Nice Brown

Mrs ToW and I went fishing last couple of weeks on the Ossipee's. Last year she caught a 21" brown and the next day I beat it with a 22 incher.

Well I found out that there is nothing worse than a woman's scorn.

She set a high bar for me this year. Here is a pic of her with her 24 inch 5 1/2 pound Brown.

Got it down 3 colors of lead on a orange with black dots D-B Smelt trolling a 2.5mph.

I have to work harder now to try and beat that fish.

It is tough to catch those browns in a lake. Nice job!

I always thought that a Brown Trout looked like this:http://www.coloradotrouthunters.com/...52-398x281.jpg

And a Rainbow Trout looks like this: http://www.coloradotrouthunters.com/...09-500x313.jpg

So isn't the fish that the nice looking lady is holding a "Rainbow Trout"? http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo.../DSC_01234.JPG

Definitely a Brown

No, that is definitely a brown trout.

The brown trout you show in the picture is simply one variation of color. The color can vary depending on maturity level, type of water, feed availability, hatchery raised or wild, etc, etc. Many brown trout are actually mistaken for salmon. The thickness of the body just forward of the tail and the coloration of the adipose fin is a good way to tell them apart.

Another dead giveaway that this is a brown trout are the red and black dots on the side with a halo looking outer ring. While you can't see the red dots in the pic, you can easily see the black halo like dots which guarantees this is a brown trout. A rainbow trout does not have the dot halo characteristics.

You got to it before me.

If you look close you can see the orange halo on some of the spots near the tail on the bottom row of spots. Also, even though you can't see it the adopose fin was tinted with orange.

When I first netted it I thought it was a BIG salmon but once I took the hook out and looked closer I could tell it was a brown.

Yup been there for a while. Rumor has it that this spring some person caught a 9 pounder.

You don't get them often and I consider them a bounus fish. But when you get one they are usually pretty good size.

I caught 3 browns around the same date as you and your wife in the Main Lake of Ossipee. One was 4.5lbs. I got one a little over 6 lbs last year. 25 inches. Beautiful fish. What bay were you fishing?

Truthful pose

May I also compliment Mrs. ToW on the trout. Plus, I like the way she is holding the fish, close to her, rather than the typical arms straight out to exaggerate the size of the fish to the camera. Nice fish.:D

I think it looks more like a Small Mouth Bass. You sure its a brown?

plumislandstripers 04-28-2014 08:34 PM

not to be rude but

That's most definitely a spawning salmon and not a brown trout. Still a beautiful fish and worth bragging about for sure.

Thanks Ishoot,

That fish IS A BROWN.

Here is the comparison chart for the two species in question.

Look at the eye to the Maxillary and you can see that one attribute says brown even though it's hard to tell from the way the fish is being held. Then some of the spots are orange. And the Caudal fin is square and not forked.

All this points to a brown trout.

Also I have been fishing for these for over 50 years and have a lot of experience in their identification.
