Best source for lake weather updates?
 

I have a radar app on my phone that I normally use to see if rain is coming, but wondered if there is a better source of info more specific to Winnipesaukee? I want to do my best to avoid getting stuck in rough conditions as a newbie boater. Thanks! :)

My favorite link is from Weather Underground. It is the radar, updated every 6 minutes or so and is well calibrated for accuracy.

This link from Plymouth State updates once an hour and gives wind speeds.

A good graphical hourly forecast comes from the National Weather Service.

On my Droid, I have Accuweather and I also have Weather Channel.

Both have radar and you can use the GPS feature on your phone to center the display where you are at, such as at Braun Bay or West Alton sand bar.

What I look at is the forecasted wind speed and direction. Home port is in Alton Bay, and if the wind is out of the west or northwest, I know I am likely to see a pretty good chop outside the bay. South winds or east winds not so much.

You can also lookup and book mark some of our webcams around the lake. I have Black Cat, Snake Eyes, Echo Shores, WeirsCam, and the WinnipesaukeeCam. Quick look at these and you can see building conditions and make your plans accordingly.

I like WEATHER BUG. The APP is available for OS and Android devices.
I especially like the Radar Map feature.

Just installed NECN's weather app yesterday to help me watch incoming/outgoing weather while I work parking cars in my parking lot. Perfect for for boaters. Comes up in about 5 seconds, pinch in/out, move around quickly to see if bad stuff is heading your way. The loop is a 1 hour loop with each portion taken every 5 minutes. And its free. On my app search it came up NECN WX.

I have Weather Underground on my PC, but I find I use WeatherBug constantly on my iPhone. I especially like the lightning alert that can instantly tell you it's 89 miles away or 3 miles; find shelter now!

On the subject of weather apps. I use weather underground, accu weather and weather bug. I got the pro edition of weather underground for a year free from "App Gratis" and "Apps Gone Free". These apps offer a free app every day, some apps are $3.99 and they "go free" for a day. You get an alert daily which is easy to ignore but the apps offered are top of the line and really great deals for people who enjoy technology game and information apps.

Apparently a couple of years ago the NOAA started doing more detailed weather reports for Winni out of the Grey, ME location. It is updated daily and can be found here :

I use the Weather Bug. My home location is Alton Bay, which uses Laconia Airport data. It loads quickly, has local conditions, radar, and an app called Spark, which gives lightning data. Handy for the lake and the golf course.

I have an Android, but the same app is available for those with IPhones.

I use both the Intellicast hourly forcast

Now if you scroll to the bottom of the above page you will see all the local personal weather stations. You can get real time data in your part of the lake. In my case I look at Welch Island Cove for current wind:

On the Android I use OnGuard Weather for severe storm alerts.

www.blackcatnh.com has the best quiky-look at the local weather, what with three different maps; radar, infared, and photo that takes a look-see at central & northern New Hampshire, as well as the foothills of the white mountains in western Maine.

The Black Cat NH radar map is probably the best map around for central NH and vicinity.
