Pops restaurant.

I have not read anything lately (actually quite a long time) about Pops in AltonBay. Did I miss some posts about it or did he close or retire? Thanks.

We ate there a little while ago. Beginning of June. Honestly it was horrible. We have always looked forward to a trip across the lake for a nice seafood dinner at POPS but I think we will be laying that tradition to a rest. We went last year while at the lake on vacation and it was terrible then too. I thought maybe we just hit them on a bad day, they were busy that day. This year we were literally the only ones in the place eating and it was bad. Sorry to say.

Same owners...I have been a couple times this year, food was good and no complaints.

Prices are a little above average but portions seem to be good.

jrc 07-29-2013 05:32 PM

My last trip there (last year?) the portions were huge and the prices were a little high. We ordered two meals and a side of onion rings, could easily feed four or five people.

I just can't eat that much fried food anymore, so I skip it. I'm too cheap to buy a meal and throw half of it away.

We may try again with sides of fish and skip the meals.

Sorry Robbsracingengines.

We eat at Pops at least 8-10 times a year, likely more. We get one dinner and an order of rings, and have trouble finishing. Often we will get half and half plate, and do scallops and whole clams. We are full when done, and all for about 30-32 dollars. It is fried food, but we enjoy it, and the food is well cooked by our standards.

Sorry RRE has had a bad experience twice.

Pops

We prefer Dockside at the end of the bay. Lighter batter, less oil and very generous portions. I don't believe you can a bait box of clams to go but they are the best seafood deal around and it's fresh, not greasy and excellent tasting. Only open thurs- Sun, unfortunately. Highly recommend checking them out. For those with lighter appetites you can split a plate ... There is enough to feed two with each dinner ... Combo is the way to go ...you each get a choice

We probably should have with the money we spent. I have no problem at all paying for a quality meal and a good portion. There was plenty of food, the problem was it was SUPER GREASY and the batter on everything was so thick and hard/crunchy I couldn't taste the seafood.

I am surprised to hear that, never had a bad meal at Pops.

Just Wondering

Maybe it's just a matter of TASTE.......:look: :look: NB

ishoot308 08-01-2013 06:22 PM

One of the things we always loved about Pop's was the fried food was NOT greasy like many other places and the batter was light...??

I'll tell you what, I'll take one for the team and go to Pop's this weekend and will report back my findings! :D

Can't wait!!

Dan

Don't think it is a matter of taste...

RRE stated they looked forward to a trip across the lake for food at Pop's. That indicates to me that they had liked the food in the past. However, he states that last year they were disappointed and again this year.

As many of us said, we have had good meals and never a bad one. And as Pops said, he wishes that RRE had said something.

I would hope that perhaps RRE could make one more trip, maybe on a smaller scale, and try it one more time. If not up to his expectations, I would hope he would explain to Pops why. I usually try to play baseball, and do three strikes...

Just seems that RRE was reluctant to say something, and that is too bad.

No matter what restaurant even 5 star there will be a unsatisfactory meal at some point. If you are the recipient speak up the management wants to know.

Me either, however there has been a couple times that I thought I would have to call Wells Fargo armor trucks...:)

I sadly didn't get to go to Pops this year on our trip up there and missed it big time. We were staying in Laconia, instead of Alton Bay and just didn't have the time for the trip over. Never had a bad experience and the portions were always huge. I always took 1/2 of mine home for lunch the next day. Yes its fried food, but very yummy and not greasy at all.

I still might take a trek up there just for Pops later on this month.

Went to Pop's last week. Wife and I shared a clam boat, and an order of onion rings. My daughters split a chicken fingers basket and my son got a hamburger plate.

Everyone said the food was good, I thought the clams were really tasty, compares to when I get them down on Cape Cod. Crisp and fresh tasting. Oil tasted fresh to me.

We had fun sitting up on the top deck, watching the activity on the bay.

Thumbs Up For Pop's!!

So six of us made the long boat ride yesterday from Welch island to Alton Bay so we could get our yearly fix of Pop's.

As anyone who was on the lake yesterday knows, it was pretty windy and rough but we were determined to get our seafood fix.

Once again, Pop's did not disappoint!! The food was just as plentiful and delicious as ever! Three plates fed all six of us with plenty of leftovers!

Thanks Pop's for a great meal!!

Dan and family!
