Garmin Survey Boat

Looks like Garmin is updating their map data for Winnipesaukee as I saw a boat similar to the one in this article driving all around Cow Island today.

And here's a grainy, far away, photo of the actual boat doing the survey here:

We saw that boat out by Tuftonboro Neck in the broads last weekend. We thought that might be what they were doing. It was silver and had Garmin written on the side, right?

Yes, it's clearly identified on the side.

Thanks for the confirmation. We thought that was what they were doing.

Saw it docked early today, near the Inn at Smith Cove.

Just saw them leaving the inn at 9am, must be a great job!

Now that is a job I would really enjoy!

I Saw It Today

It was about 11:30am on the north side of Little Bear Island heading towards the Barber's Pole.

Off Welch today

Appeared to be running an approximate east/west grid.

Macro-Benthic-Topology?

That Garmin survey vessel made three alternating passes in about one hour. First, at 150' from our shoreline, then about 300', and another at about 450'. Must be truly interesting sightings besides contours of the bottom.

Surely, there are larger glacial erratic boulders than the two off the Broads-side of northern Rattlesnake Island--which are very close to the surface this time of year.

Agreed, but I'd especially like to interview Garmin's surveyors and review their printouts. Lake Winnipesaukee may be about to give up many of its long-lost secrets.

:eek2:

..... an aluminum boat?

That looks like an all-aluminum boat with two Yamaha four-stroke outboards, that is welded construction as opposed to riveted construction, which is un-painted; pretty unusual to see this as most boats that size, about 28', with the exception of the NH Marine Patrol boats, are all made of fiberglass. So why would Garmin go with an aluminum boat like that when there are so, so many used fiberglass boats for sale in the classified ads everywhere? What could be the reasons why Garmin choose to go aluminum like that? Aluminum vs fiberglass ..... someone at Garmin made the decision to buy aluminum and not fiberglass and place their name on it. Like, what could they be thinking? Except for the Marine Patrol, which has 27' welded aluminum police boats painted dark gray, it is very unusual to see an un-painted aluminum boat like that on Lake Winnipesaukee. Most all boats that big on this lake are fiberglass.

So, how long will an aluminum boat like that last in the slightly acidic waters of Lake Winnipesaukee ........ oh ....... maybe 100-years or more ....after all....the Mount Washington is made of 1885 iron .....isn't it?

I suspect they went with aluminum because it is lighter and easier to trailer to the different lakes across the county that they would need to survey.

The Garmin boat looks like it has a water cannon on the bow. Is this a reclaimed fire boat?

Or, if it's not a water cannon, what's the device on the front of the boat?
