New Seasons added to New Hampshire Calendar

After driving around today, it occured to me that IMO we need to change our seasonal calendar.

I propose that after winter, we add 3 new seasons, "Frost Heave" and "Mud", this would be followed by a by a short "Spring", and then "Black Fly".

I'm not sure, but I think "Load Limit" could be incorporated into "Frost Heave".

I probably missed a few.

Gotta love New Hampshire :)

Along with the aformentioned, I think we should add an "almost" season. As I see it, it's been "almost" spring for a while, and the same usually happens with summer. :D

KBG,

Thanks, you bring up a good point. We may need a "T'aint" or "T'ween: season. T'aint summer, t'aint winter; or t'ween summer, t'ween winter. I'm just not sure if these should be their own seasons, higher level ones. ;)

You all are inventive - love your seasons! Paugus Bay Resident, bet the disruption to the roads by frost heaves was really noticeable.

As a side note and a minor digression, this weekend I'm driving Route 11 to Rochester and the place I dread more than anything is the section of road from Ellacoya down to Echo Shores (kind of West Alton to Alton). It passes that old train station amongst other things. It has been bad these last 3 years but this year, the heaves are worse than ever. I had hopes the state was going to pave it and it looked last fall like they had put on the leveling coat just before the paving process but they did absolutely nothing after that. You absolutely cannot go fast in there and by the time you ride through that area, you have shaken yourself to the core. Often wondered if you had a blender full of syrup and milk with you if you wouldn't end up with a milkshake afterwards. Please tell me that they are going to pave it some day. We got the Moultonborough Neck Road paved after many complaints to the state by a bunch of people - haven't others written in about that area too?

Have ya ever noticed that just before spring, there's this last burst of grumbles season (everybody fed up with winter) followed by a few days' season of anticipation, as all of a sudden the snow begins to recede, it's sunnier and oh so slightly warmer, and a baby crocus or daffodil pokes its little head up through the last few traces of snow?

Cal,
I think last year went something like this.
Winter, Mud, Late Spring, Late Fall, Winter

Rt 11 needs more than paving

Unfortunately, in the case of Rt 11 in Gilford, between Ellacoya and Alton, paving is just a very temporary fix. That road needs to be dug out and rebuilt before paving. What a mess! :(

Black Fly Season is my favorite.....

This repaving is in the works but is a very complicated process. In the past there has also been talk of a bypass. I think the repaving project was supposed to go out for bids this winter. DRH has been involved in this and I know he has lots of information....DRH?

The tourism industry really struggles during this time of year. See article

I own a piece of property that might be impacted by a bypass, should it ever occur. I checked with the State last year about this and they told me that if it had been funded last year (which it was not) the soonest construction would start would be in the year 2020. Looks like they need to repave before putting in a bypass. :D

Here's Some Rt. 11 Info

The NH DOT held an informational meeting at the Alton Town Hall last December 15 to discuss a Rt. 11 highway improvement project that will take place this year. The section of Rt. 11 between Butler Road and Minge Cove Rd., a stretch of about 3.9 miles, is going to be resurfaced, guardrails replaced, and the rock cliffs near the "Scenic View" are going to be "scaled", which involves removing loose and falling rock and stabilizing the rock face.

At that meeting there was also discussion about the section of Rt. 11 between Minge Cove Rd. and Ellacoya State Park that is in poor condition. Due to state budgetary constraints, and the pending Rt. 11 bypass proposal, that section of roadway is not scheduled for reconstruction until at least 2010, and possibly as far out as 2013.

The DOT isued a "Conference Report" on January 13, 2005 that provides additional information.

According to the almanac ...

... No not the Farmer's Almanac nor Poor Richard's almanac but the more accurate, though less well known, Crazy Larry's almanac ... anyway according to this trustworthy source we've yet to hear about the milking season. Back in Larry's day (olde Ben Franklin really got lucky with that whole revolution thing, otherwise we'd all be quoting Crazy Larry or perhaps his cousin, Silly Sue ah yaah .... errr but I digress) there was the milking season. The season's start was defined as the earliest time you could gather the cows and perform the years first milking (well it was Cow Hampshire back then too). The end was of course when the cows fled the barn hid in the woods and stop producing. Of course the modern milking season still exists, although in altered form. All the natives now know that it's easier, and more profitable, to milk the tourists rather than the cows ! So there it is, milking season explained in it's original and modern forms. If this post weren't so long I'd go on to explain the origins of the NH state bird and skeetah season but ....

I would click on th Weirs Channel cam...they had an extra link on there of a sunny day so I could remember what it looked like. Sure did seem like there was very many :( .

Seems as though last year upstate NY and New England had a direct path for the rain storms to follow.

No no no.......don't forget it was beautiful from August 28th to September 10th, with the exception of just 2 days, Sep 8th and 9th.

I remember well, as that was when I was up for the birth of my granddaughter. It was gorgeous the whole time, save for those 2 days.

I had to put up with that, instead of being home, missing Hurricane Frances. :D
