Boat still in the water?
 

OK, so who still has their boat in the water? Planning on taking ours out on Sunday. Was hoping for another nice, warm weekend, but at least it shouldn't be snowing.
It will be a cold ride to the boat ramp! :)

Around Thanksgiving
 

I have a covered slip. The boats in the slips are usually the last to be winterized. This is usually around Thanksgiving. I have seen my boat in the water in December.

I remember about 10 years ago, boating on the lake on a Thanksgiving weekend. The weather was in the '70's. It was a great boat ride but kind of eerie to see no boats on the lake.

My motorboat is still in, but I'm getting anxious. Looks like some snow on Monday November 4'th, so I'm thinking it is not a good year to stretch it.

I have one out of the water and the other is still in. Closing the camp up this weekend but will probably take another boat ride out for the day next weekend then maybe pull the boat for the winter...maybe...:)

Mine's still in. I usually pull it perhaps a week into November. Oh, to be sure, there are some lovely, balmy days in November when it's pure boating pleasure to get out there with absolutely nobody else making waves, and on occasion the water even on the Broads is flat, so that even with a parka on a boat ride out there is serene. But by early November the more likely expectation is that the weather will be too unpleasant for boating, and getting the boat out means just another get-ready-for-winter gets crossed off the list. Shortly after that come the days when I wish I had left it in. A couple of years back, New Year's Day saw the temp flirting with 60 and I saw a boat out for a NYD cruise.

One of mine is still in. Been there for nearly 35 years, when we sunk her. 5' plywood pram that served us well, but sits at the bottom now. Nearly unrecognizable now.:laugh:

Mines out, Seats and cushions out to be upholstered. Not winterized yet so could put some milk crates in and take her out for a ride:D

Sadly our boat comes out tomorrow, but we had some great boating last weekend.

Last cruise was 2 weeks ago and then we readied her for a winter sleep. The motor was set to be winterized and boat put away this past week.
Oh the withdrawal pains! :eek:

Now the question is: When will Ice Out happen for 2014.;)

Upthesaukee Too got dropped off at WAM on Oct 13th, and was put to bed that week.

Look on the bright side....only 186 days to May 1st, which is almost always a great day to plan on the boat going back into the water. :D

Back to boats still in the water...

Our last night on Barndoor 'til May...boat gets pulled tomorrow for its winter rest at Goodhue. Tomorrow I will have a strange feeling in my gut as we drive south! Cheers to the forum, always great reading!

Boat taken out last week and cranked up the dock yesterday. :(

I am staying in probably until the end of November. I have a project under way at the island.

were still in the water. Jet Skis, Jet Boat and lifts have been removed but leaving the mother ship in until Veterans Day Hoping for a heat wave, lol. :)

Still in...Thanksgiving weekend is closing day for us.

We did it. Boat is at Winnisquam marine for a long winter's rest. Cottage closed, water drained. Leaving the heat on at 50 this year, doesn't take much oil to do that. Sad drive home, where did summer go?
On a lighter note, Pats and Sox both posted a W.

We took the boat out yesterday from Moultonboro to Wolfeboro for lunch. A little ruff in the broads but we made it no problem (my 3 year old likes to go fast :)). Besides a few fishing boats we did not see much action on the lake yesterday

Ours went to bed 2 weeks ago. We were able to get up a couple of times earlier in the month. We had the old Wellcraft both at home to use in the ocean and would also tow it up to the lake. That's gone now and the newer Bayliner we got in July which has never left Winni, will be staying up there full time at Minge Cove/Andrew's Marina. Looking forward to a short winter, an early spring, and a long summer! GO SOX!

My Lake broghers an I are staying in till we have to. We pull and service our own boats and have work to do on Pine Island for a while yet.

Not to preach but... It is cold and lonley out there now. This is a good time of year to have a float plan and wear, yup wear that PFD. Maybe if you look dorky enough she will buy you a cool inflatable for Christmas!

I was underway, OK, in the 14' Sea Nymph at 0001 on 1-1-2000. I guess that I will just have to wait for the next time it comes around!

Still hanging in there for days like yesterday... Had a nice lunch floating the broads. Only saw 2 other boats the whole time.

We took the final ride of the season in the boat yesterday. It was beautiful on the water and we couldn't of asked for a better last day out!

Made one last double check at the camp to ensure we didn't forget anything.

We then dropped the boat off at John Spooner's place so he could work his magic before storing for the winter.

While we closed up a couple weeks early, I have no complaints, as it was once again a great summer for us!

I hope all of you had a great summer as well!!

I am now officially ready for an early ICE IN!!! :eek:

I know a number of you spend Thanksgiving on the island. I can remember island folks picking up friends and family at Glendale.

I use to spend Thanksgiving and weather permitting Christmas on the island. There is nothing like the holidays on the island.

I remember one New Year's weekend decades ago, water skiing in our wet suits.

Still in the water. It was a very rough ride out and back yesterday, one of the roughest I have seen. I saw 2 other boats out, one of which was a contractor that was working at the house. Still a few boats left in Smith Cove.

I will probably be in for 2 more weeks.

The Eastern will be pulled next week, but will keep the AlumaCraft in till ice-in...

And then hopefully the ice forms quick and thick so we can hoof it over to the island!

This was the scene in Alton Bay yesterday (11/30/2013).

Yep that is a boat pretending that it is a combination ice breaker and tow boat working its way through the ice in the Bay. All you could here is crunch, crunch, crunch.

I am sure that there is some logical reason why the boat needed to be pulled out of the water in Alton versus Wolfeboro or any other location that was not iced in.

It was funny to watch as they had to smash their way through the ice with hand tools.

I went out for a boat ride with my neighbor on Saturday. I still have 2 skis in the water.... waiting for the ice!

Way to go!

If my water pump hadn't frozen solid last week I would still be in as well. Smith Cove came in early.

I will probably re-launch either this weekend or early next week for a day to get a few final things done.

we were up on the island last Tuesday through yesterday night... it was a pretty chilly ride back and forth last week in the Alumacraft skiff with the temp in the teen's at points! Saturday Misty Blue came out from Braun Bay and said he had to break through an inch of ice that was from shore to 30 feet beyond the end of his dock... suspecting that this week it will melt back again, but it's a sure sign that if we get enough cold/calm weather it could freeze up pretty quick...

I was chuckling about what would happen if we got socked in on the island over the weekend "hi, I'll be working remote until the ice gets thick enough to walk across to the mainland, in the meantime I'll be trapping squirrels for dinner"...

I wonder how the gelcoat on the ice breaker/tow boat held up against the ice? Years ago, (early 80's) my parents had a 28' Trojan cruiser at Silver Sands that got iced in (less than 1" thick) and by the time they got it out to open water at the gas dock, the bow of the wooden hull was chewed up a bit at the water line by the ice (having a stainless steel keel trim [similar to the rub rail] only saved the keel from the ice). Needless to say, they didn't wait that long again!


Maybe someone could arrange to airlift some supplies to you by drone? :laugh:

I dock off the Winnipesaukee River. This is probably the last to freeze over because of the current. No worries. There were times when I will be out on the lake on the last day of the year!

I am wondering how all these drones flying all over the place will not run into each other and birds etc.? Will they have sensors?

It's a concept that's hard to grasp but I'm sure avoiding collisions was the first issue raised. I've given up trying to guess how and just enjoying the fruits of technology. We have entered the age of the "law of accelerated returns". We have advanced to an expotential increase in technology. We are approaching "singularity", a point where progress is so rapid it outstrips humans' ability to comprehend it. Read some Ray Kurzweil books and you will be amazed at where we are headed in the next 20 years in computers, genetics, nanotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Very hard to do
 

Running into each other is very hard to do given their size and the space they fly in. My father was a model airplane builder and flyer in a flying club. I remember asking him about the same question when they flew multiple planes in the same area. His answer was that is was extremely hard to do and to prove it every once in awhile they would send a few planes up and actually try to hit one another...never did it.

Running into birds is even harder since the bird has something to say about it

Do you know why it is so hard for them to run into each other?

Biggest problem for drones that I see is handling weather.

The video mentions a ten mile delivery radius, but having a "mother ship" to act like the current UPS or FedEx delivery trucks could solve that problem.

Would you take an Amazon drone delivery to your boat at anchor? Half an hour for delivery from time of order make this a good deal. Need a First Aid kit, an umbrella, towels and other items you might want during a day at anchor.

Instead of an address you give them your boat's coordinates from your GPS.

well...this is the latest I've ever been out on the lake while it's in liquid ( semi-liquid in spots ) form....beat last year by 3 days. It's time though...when the 4x4 gets stuck on the frozen Glendale boat ramp, and you have to hook a strap onto your neighbor's truck to pull you and your boat out, it's time to call it a year! ( Thanks J. )

The Lake's Winter Ice Boat
 

In all of my travels around the lake by snowmobile for many years, here's a picture of a sailboat locked in Winni's ice, the only boat that stayed in the lake year round, that I ever saw!! They just pull the keel-board, and leave her in... And surprisingly, never any damage. After ice out in Spring, they'ed pull her back over to the dock and sail over the summer season...

There is a number of boats/pontoons in the water last night. Some island property owners won't give up!

I saw that as well. Most of those boats however belong to either Island Support Services or Winni Island Services. They are always the last to come out.
