Alton/ Wolfboro recommendations?

Hi-

We just moved to the area in earlier this month. The boxes are now under control and we are unpacked. We will be living here year round and find this website and the people on it incredible!

We are beginning to find our way around the area but could benefit greatly from any advice you would be nice enough to pass along to us. Nothing is too basic as we would benefit from knowing what business to know for everything from where to get a haircut to your choice for getting car repairs and everything in between!

Thanks for any response you send to this post!

Welcome!

Welcome to the prettiest place on earth!
I hope others will chime in with specifics, but there is a Newcomers group in Wolfeboro. When our former camp director moved to the area, his wife and mother got into the group. The group has come to Sandy Island for lunches and activities, but that's about all I know. Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce would have info on contacts, if someone here doesn't.

Cleaning services

Welcome to the area. Anybody who can survive a few years of lean winters and busy summers is likely to be very customer oriented. Summary, there aren't many around here to stay away from. We particularly liked Great Northern Cleaning Service. They'll do once a week or once a year.

Jerry's for haircut

Jerry's Barber shop in Alton is good for men's haircuts - both Gerard and Andy cut hair and the place is a good source for local news and other info. If you don't have a washer and dryer, the Laundromat behind the post office in Alton is super. Even if you have a washer and dryer, we use their larger 4 and 6 load machines to do quilts, sleeping bags, etc.

Alton/Wolfeboro Newcomers

Hello and welcome! We moved to the Wolfeboro side of Alton Bay this past October. We've found this forum very helpful for all the questions you might have.

We also joined the Wolfeboro Newcomers Club and have been enjoying many club activities with them. In fact, their monthly breakfast is coming up which is a great way meet the members and hear about upcoming activities.

Please contact me if you'd like further info :)

Welcome to Wolfeboro too !
Must be something that is attracting all of us 'newbies' to Wolfeboro :)
Am in the same 'boat' unpacking boxes and boxes...
And "ditto" to how helpful this website is . . .
Hope to meet you in town one of these days!

Alton Recommendations

Welcome!! I have been impressed with the service at Wayne's Transmission on Main St in Alton (they handle all repairs, not just transmissions). Honest, reasonably priced, quick service. Fiddlehead Farms on Main St is THE place for great produce, seafood and meats, and they run some incredible specials. Hours are limited in winter to TH through SUN. If you have young ones in your family, the library on Main St has some nice programs, and in the summer Alton Parks and Rec has some fun activities.

If there is anything particular you are looking for, just ask!!

Wolfeboro Happenings

Hi all. As a recent Wolfeboro arrival I would say that one of the best ways to get to know the area and meet some people is to join some local groups and go to local events. Subscribe to the "Granite State News" and find out what's happening. Go downtown and strike up conversations. Hang out at any of the local eateries that let you hang out. (Nolans, Downtown Grille, Lydia's)

There is SO much to do here, you could be busy every night. If you are retired, you could be busy every DAY and night :) So many great organizations with volunteers. (If you are into theatre, consider getting involved with the Village Players. Fun group and instant social life.)

Winter is actually the best time to discover who lives here year-round. Other times of the year the population totally changes.

I have had a wonderful time discovering services in the area and find there is basically everything I need including very good medical and dental services. If you are looking for recommendations for any particular service, PM me and I'll give you names and numbers.

Dry Cleaners recommendations?

We have been diligently following the advice on this website and haven't been disappointed - we are grateful.

Now tat 99% of the boxes are unpacked and our house has improved to "organized" chaotic status - we find a number of items that need to go to the dry cleaners.

So, who what business would you suggest? All things being equal, we prefer a local business that does the dry cleaning here rather than one that just sends it out to a bigger operation. However, the main factor is how good a job they do!

Thank you very much!

Try Wolfeboro Cleaners between Rite Aid and Hunters. They did a good job on my things.

Alton/Wolfeboro

Wolfeboro Cleaners also offers a few services besides cleaning, i.e., zipper repairs, minor other repairs, alterations, rebinding services. I am not 'fluent' in this genre, but if you have needs in these areas it would certainly be a good idea to at least speak with them.

Happy New Year, and, Happy St Patrick's Day.

I just picked up a sweater I dropped off to them in Wolfeboro. It came back great- they give a 5% discount if you pre-pay when dropping off......and it was only $5.40 !

Impressed with the result - thanks for your advice!
