Name Ideas for New Boat

1 Attachment(s)
We are about to purchase a new sail boat (see image below) and want to change the name. (and yes I am aware of the elaborate ritual we must do to rename a boat). We are looking for a name that is unique and exemplifies the beauty of the lake and the grace of sailing. (Nothing cute or puns or macho) Something that might be historical or native american. Something easy to say and explain. Maybe a native bird or weather related?

All ideas are welcome.

Welp, I'm going to be of no use then.

Congrats on the new boat :)

It's Black, White, Elegant and Peacefully at home on the lake;"Gavia Immer".

A few old references

try here:

or here:

http://www.lwhs.us/win-legend.htm

maybe Mineola or Adiwando ?

"Many moons ago on the northern shore of this beautiful lake there lived a great chief, Wonaton, renowned for his great courage in war, and for the beauty of his fair daughter, Mineola. She had many suitors, but refused them all. One day, Adiwando, the young chief of a hostile tribe to the south, hearing so much of the fair Mineola, paddled across the lake and fearlessly entered the village of his enemies. Her father happened to be away at the time, and admiring his courage, the rest of the Indians did not harm him. Before long, he and the Indian maid were desperately in love with each other. Wonaton, on his return was exceedingly wroth to find the chief of the enemy in his camp and a suitor for the hand of his daughter, that he immediately raised his tomahawk to kill him. "Mineola, rushing in between them, pleaded with her father for the life of her lover, and finally succeeded in reconciling them. After the wedding ceremony, the whole tribe accompanied the two in their canoes half-way across the lake. The sky when they started was overcast and the waters black, but just as they were about to turn and leave them, the sun came out and the waters sparkled around the canoe of Mineola and Adiwando." "This is a good omen" said Wonaton, "and hereafter these waters shall be called Winnipesaukee, or "Smile of the Great Spirit".

Great looking sail boat. Congratulations on your purchase and enjoy many sailing days on the lake!
Maybe take a trip to the Libby Museum to find inspiration for a name.

8gv 06-10-2014 07:29 AM

Kismet

It means "fate".

ishoot308 06-10-2014 08:16 AM

When I look at that boat and the location it will be docked as well as the person who wasn't afraid to pick up and move everything she owned all on her own to this little slice of heaven we call Lake Winnipesaukee, the name "Free Spirit" comes to mind...

Good luck with your new boat Cate!

Dan

Accipiter290 06-10-2014 08:27 AM

I've found it's best to not plan on a name or search for one. One day you'll describe how it rides or describe the boat itself, etc and you'll say "...that's the name!"

p.s. this is why my boat is called "The Porpoise" :rolleye1:

Rich 06-10-2014 08:48 AM

How about:

Boat

or

Sailboat

I don't think I've seen those names on the lake yet! ;)

Woodsy 06-10-2014 10:28 AM

Without knowing your personality name suggestions are difficult.... Some of the names I though of...

Whydah (Pirate galley)
Pegasus
Wind Dancer
Witches (local shoal)
Stargazer
Moondancer

Woodsy

Abenaki Dictionary

There is one at the Laconia Library. You can give it an Indian name.

My neighbor on the lake, called his cottage 'Skungamug Tenega' I always wonder what it means. I can never find the two words in the dictionary. He was an English Professor at Dartmouth College.

Dave R 06-10-2014 12:53 PM

My all-time favorite sailboat is named Beowulf (I love the boat regardless of the name). My boat was named by my kids and is a reference to Harry Potter books that my kids are VERY fond of. Perhaps something with literary roots like those would fit. Are there any books that really left impression on you?

Although I can't reconcile how "All ideas are welcome" and "Nothing cute or puns or macho" can both be true, this website is a good resource:

https://www.boatus.com/boatgraphicsnew/boat-names.asp

It has the most popular names ordered as boat graphics for the last thirty years and a directory of all names ordered.

Not quite, they don't have my boat's name, and I ordered the graphics from them last year.

Never saw this one. How about Blowmotion?

Unbelievable! They also don't have my boat's name listed there!

jrc 06-10-2014 02:17 PM

Sorry I guess they don't put all the names up and my math was wrong, only twenty something years of top ten names.

Ok one more resource, this site list some Abenaki mythology, they were the last Indian tribe in NH.

I was invited for a sail, I believe it was out of Salem harbor. Several of us were on board when my curiosity got the best of me, so I ask:

What's the meaning of your boat's name? (I tend to enjoy the story behind why a particular name was chosen for a boat).

The owner answers dryly: "I don't know"

Not believing this, I continue: How can you not know? It's your boat! Really, what does it mean?!?!?

I get the same answer: "I don't know!"

Ok, I truely can't believe he wouldn't know what is means, so I continue: "How can you not know what the name of your boat means? Was the name already on it when you purchased it and were you too superstitious to change it?"

No, he says, "Non lo so" litteraly means "I don't know" in Italian! :D

Yes, I bit and took the bait, hook, line and sinker.

I guess he loves it whenever anyone asks about his boat name.

This happened to me about 30 years ago, and I still get a chuckle out of it, but I sure felt like a dope at the time!

RailroadJoe 06-10-2014 04:28 PM

How about "MY BOAT"

Phantom 06-10-2014 04:50 PM

Don't ask the meaning of the name we gave my daughters boat !

but it does apply :D

Oh wait... On second thought (I changed the 'e' for a '_') as I don't think my GF would like that name on a sail boat either, but I thought it was a natural for a sail boat and funny!

Thank Yous All Around

For some reason I can't thank individual posts on this thread anymore.
Some of these are wonderful names. Especially "Blow__. (not)

I really appreciate the one's that recognize my move up here as it WAS a great adventure. However, I am buying the boat with my partner Dianna, so the name needs to resonate for both of us.

We are doing the final inspection today with my good friend Dan (ChaseDawg) and closing on the deal. For those of you who come to Forum Fest, you can see the boat and hopefully the new name.

Thanks again everybody for the good ideas and good laughs!!

If you like Summer Breeze or some other popular name, check this site and you can translate it into another language. Pick a language that means something to you or just sounds nice.

Name combinations

In this case, "CaDi". I also like musical terms, "del signo al fine" may be a little long, but "Caprice" (a quick little number) could work. Easy to find lists with Google, looking for subject matter, e.g. musical terms, rather than lists of names that everybody else has already used.

Very interesting, but as I am looking deeper into this Abenaki language, I find it all sounds rather odd for a boat name. A lot of "og" and "ug" sounding words.

My salesman (Jason Wiley) and finance guy (Gary Harbor at the time) at Irwin Marine, actually bought us the Seals and Crofts CD as a present to go with the new boat (10 Years ago now) I play it often and still really get why we named the boat what we did.

Cate, you probably won't like this name, but I was trying to see what name I could make up from the letters in your's and Dianna's names and I came up with "AN AACIDENT"

CateP 06-11-2014 09:00 PM

We FOUND a NAME!

We just closed on the boat purchase tonight and we came up with a name that is meaningful to us...

Reliance

It is about trust (buying a boat together) and being able to rely on each other as sail mates. It is also about being able to rely on the boat! We think it is a strong assertive name, but not too harsh sounding.

Look for Reliance sailing around Wolfeboro and hopefully farther north.

There are some very creative and funny names on this thread that I hope others can use. Thanks everyone.

Woodsy 06-11-2014 09:09 PM

AWESOME Name! Congrats Cate!

Fair Winds and Following Seas!

Scraping off the stickers and putting the new decals on.

If it was an ocean going vessel and had its name registered with the Coast Guard, that requires filing paperwork and a pardon from the Governor. This is less than likely for a boat on Winni!

I'm thinking that because the boat is on the lake we may not need to invoke all those sea gods in the ceremony. In fact I'm thinking we may revise the naming ceremony quite a bit and just have a couple beers and have a toast to Mineola and any other lake spirits that may be lingering about...especially the spirit of "Squirrley Winds" ...you know...that sudden shift of wind direction that sends the boom flying across the cockpit and knocking unaware sailors unconscious?

"Liquid Serenity"

HomeWood 06-24-2014 12:15 AM

I was looking around for some New England Native American tribes. The Abenaki were in most of NH. (according to my 2 mins of research)

Wampanoag from Massachusetts translations. (Where I grew up)

Sun (Soleil) Cone
Moon (Lune) Appause
Water (Eau) Nippe
White (Blanc) Wompey

I always thought Winni's water was really white and clean in a boat's wake or prop wash. I thought "Wompey Nippe" was kind of catchy. Here's a link to some translated words but the variety is somewhat limited. Maybe you can make something out of them.

http://www.native-languages.org/famalg_words.htm

Congrats on the sharp boat, btw!

Edit: I missed your post where you picked "Reliance". That's a good one!
