I was wondering about food imported from China? I love mandarin oranges, but I can only find them imported from China. Does the product have to be inspected or tested in the USA for added chemicals etc.?
|
Yes and no. Less than 3% of imported foods from China are inspected by the FDA. Some organizations have raised serious questions regarding our food safety, and China is rapidly becoming America's grocery store.

Think of all the pet food recalls after US pets die from their stuff.... Is that mandarin oranges super orange color natural or ....

I love the canned Mandarin oranges.
This product has been around for a long time - with no issues. On the flip side the food industry has fought labeling laws for decades. One has no idea where the fresh vegetables come from unless labeled. Yes, one should purchase local grown if possible. China does have quality control issues. There is a reason why there are no Chinese automobiles sold in the USA. Here in the USA there have been issues with USA meats and some vegetables. One can get a tad paranoid. I would say that the Mandarin oranges would be fine. |

Professor - Country of origin labeling laws requires retailers to clearly declare country of orgin on meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables. If it is not Cleary listed on the package, it must be declared on the shelf (most common with produce). So in theory, one should know the orgin of the fresh food in question. With that said, no agency is actually policing this regulation, so not all stores follow the rules.
The vast majority of our food is safe, but issues happen. I am on an email list for recalls due to my business (grocery store) and there are multiple recalls every day. These range from undeclared allergens on labels to salmonella, etc. The vast majority of effected foods are pulled from the distribution chain before consumers ever get near them. I will say, it seems like the vast majority of the recalls I see are from Chinese products. But that doesn't mean all thier products are bad. I myself prefer fresh, natural, unprocessed foids, local when possible. It's a big world though, and favorites can't always be found from a local framer. With fresh produce, wash, wash, wash. No matter the source. With oranges and other rind produce, don't forget to wash the outside prior to slicing to avoid contamination of the inner fruit. |
Btw...mandarian oranges are one of the fastest growing citrus segments. Sunkist, Miller citrus, and native forest (organic) a are all USA grown.

Connection to the Lakes Region?
|
Oops, sorry webmaster for breaking the rules on lakes related topics only. Mea culpa.
|
Sorry that I broke the rules about lake related topics. I feel mandarin oranges are found in local stores around the lake. This topic would be similar to talking about Market Basket. Both not on the lake, but nearby.

Be careful with packaged seafood. There is a country of origin label on the package, but often it doesn't declare if it is where the boat was registered or if it was where the processor is located. If it is farm raised fish, it is the location of the farm.
