Foam on the lake between Welch and mainland
 

Does anybody know what's causing this? There is a lot of it.

Could it be from all the lake bathers out there?? HeHeHe!

Did not notice it in and out yesterday or on the trip in this morning. Will take a close look on the way back out a little later.

It appears that all those algae "dots" suspended in the water are dying and likely causing that.

We did see some small patches on the way back to Welch today. As for the striations in the photos, light wind this morning was east to down east so west side of Welch was in the lee. The eddy line wraps around Welch arching toward Locks island, the foam distributed in windrows.

I started on a "bucket list" item for me this month...learning to scuba dive. Taking lessons on Winni. I have to say its been disconcerting to see the amount of gelatinous algae on the bottom in the area where I've been training.

Other than fresh water mussels, no aquatic life in the area. One fish in 2 days of diving. Only clumps of algae as far as the eye can see.

Something needs to change or the future is not looking good.

I'm not an authority, but I have been diving since about 1983. The few fresh water lakes and ponds I've dove in were about the same. Unless you dive on a wreck, there is just not much to see. Mostly a mud or sand bottom, but not much that looks alive.

If you want to see a lot of wildlife, dive in the ocean. Up here in New England we have some great ocean diving, there is a LOT to see. Even more to see than in the Carribean. The Carribean has clearer water, but it seems like a desert in comparison to diving in New England.

Those algae "dots" (Gloeotrichia echinulata) are further apart below the surface, and have definitely dropped in number.

Less than a week ago, they started to accumulate on the surface and I wondered if they had started to become a poisonous mat of blue-green algae.

But perhaps this time of year, the foam is made up of their disintegrating protoplasm.

Funny thing it only lasted that 1 day and in only that area. I was out in the boat later that afternoon and saw nothing, anywhere. Maybe it was those nude bathers at Ellacoya!

It's still around, location shifts with the wind. Near Belknap point this morning, Thursday evening it was just off the west shore of Welch.
