New NH Registration by mail?
 

I am selling my boat this weekend to an out of state buyer who intends to register the boat in NH. Because the registry will not be open he intends to register by mail by sending in the application, bill-of-sale, and check for fees. I checked the NH DMV site and it looks like this is possible. Am I right? I just don't want to give him bad information.

Renewals Only
 

The registration by mail is for renewals only.

Any new reg or transfers must be done at a DMV substation, Marine Patrol or a marina.

Remember...the bow number stays with the boat for as long as it is registered in NH.

Follow the Money
 

I think the Department of Safety wants to encourage you to register with them so they can keep all the money. When you register through an agent (Town or marina) the Town gets to keep some of the money. Many towns turn that around and spend it on docks, launch ramps and other boating projects.

Registration by Mail
 

I bought a small sailboat (15 ft) from a guy on Sunapee this past spring and registered it through the mail. Sent bill of sale (including hull ID number - equivalent to a car VIN) along with the form and a check.

No problems at all.

Thanks Kamper. You are right, I just spoke the registry and they told me they do allow new owners to register via mail. Hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.
