Acknowledgement from the Mt Washington
 

If you are fortunate enough to have the Mt Washington occasionally pass by close-at-hand during one of it's evening cruises .... you may want to try this for your children/grandchildren (not to mention for yourself). Four years ago the previous owner of our place shared that when the Mount passes by at night .... if you frantically blink your deck lights as it goes by they will (most times) train the search lights on you and flash them! The following pictures captures this happening with us on Sept 5th. Note the two bright lights illuminated in the center picture. Very cool .... and the kids (and my wife) love it! Give 'er a shot.

We Do The Same Thing...
 

...when it passes by on her evening route.

There are several families here on Bear that do it but we go one step further and blow those silly blue horns you can get at carnivals.

And yes...she does reply in turn with her horn.

That is great. I remember the first time I went on the Mt. at night and was surprised when we went by Rattlesnake that all the islanders blinked their lights. I was unaware that they did so until that trip.

Maybe they just think that you are in distress, so they are training their spotlight on you to check you out with their binoculars. Then flash the lights back when they see your smilling facing watching them. :laugh:

We always try to blink when the Mount goes by at night. Everyone seems to enjoy the response from the Mount. Too bad it is only a few more times this season

Tradition
 

As far back as I remember, the 50's, it was a tradition in the family to flash the outside flood lights a number of times and the Mount will respond!

I sure miss the sound of those old diesel engines. The CATS are wicked quiet!

Flashing the Mount
 

We have been flashing the Mount for all of the 47 seasons we have been at our place on East Bear Island. She used to flash back with her searchlight. She now signals with two small lights located below the pilot house. Our guests look forward to viewing this "ritual" during their visit. Thank you, Captain.

You're welcome, Barney. Flashing things like porch or dock lights is great, and we'll usually respond with our bridge wing floodlights or our searchlight. It's a great tradition we're happy to continue!

There are a few folks that hit us with a bright spotlight aimed at the wheelhouse. Such a light ruins night vision and we try to discourage those by not responding.

Skprbob-Please pass on thanks to the crew from those of us at Rattlesnake Island for all of the flashing. Seeing you go by is always noticed and appreciated. The Mount is one of the wonders of the lake and is to be treasured.

We try to wave in the daytime and will be flashing at you at night!!
