The Ice Monster has awakened
 

The ice started to move and has taken out a number of docks today. This is the Center Harbor Docks this morning and this is just the beginning to a long week ahead !:(

Looking at that picture carefully it appears that it will be a relatively easy (crane required) fix.

It appears that the dock was pushed off it's platform and that the dock itself is still "whole"

For those who have docks damaged by ice, if you have a recent dock repair permit and your dock was damaged again you may be able to use the same permit. Just make certain of two things: 1) that the permit has not expired, and 2) that the permit originally covered the same structures that were damaged this year.

Also and very important, if you have a permit that reads "Repair..." or "Repair and maintain..." and it is about to expire do not miss the deadline to extend it. You can extend these permits once for an additional 5 years but the extension request needs to be filed before the permit expires. You can find the request form on the NH DES Wetlands website.

It should be noted that this can be valid for dock and wall repairs but does not work for beach replenishment permits which have a specific condition stating they can only be used for a single replenishment.

Shore Things, our Jetty was damaged from last years ice, the docking structure is OK we just need the rocks on the tip replaced. Do I need a drege and fill permit or will a PBN work for that? Thanks for all your help over the years.

PBN can be used for jetty/breakwater repair but our advice is generally if the damage is not causing a problem with using the dock then go with the regular application process. The paperwork, attachments, and fees are the same but with the regular application DES issues a hard copy permit that you can record, post, and extend. Some Country Registries may refuse to record PBNs and when you post them people often can't figure out what work they cover.
