Boat sinks at Akwa Marina

I just got off the phone with a friend, so this is second hand.

But a 40 ft (or so) boat (Sea Ray?) sank at Akwa Marina last night/this morning.

It was at the dock last night, floating. This morning, it was so deep only the top of the bimini was out of the water.

Don't know anything else yet.

They are still trying to pump it out as I type this.

Forgot to put in the drain plug? Bellows failure? Broken hose? Who knows?!?

Sad news.

Ugh, that really stinks. So that begs the question - would a water alarm be beneficial in cases like this? I'm curious if it was on shore power?

Looking at the Webcam, I see no activity on the docks ... but do see one MP boat offshore (time 1:02pm)

For about 12-dollars, the Gilford Lowe's has a water leak alarm that runs on a 9v battery, and runs continually for something like a week until the battery runs out....is about the size of two packs of Lucky Strikes, and can be found in the water pump dept at Lowe's. It gets placed onto a carpet and senses the water conducting current across the two terminals and starts to sound.

Makes a great stocking stuffer for Christmas! Wonder if it will still sound when it is totally under water ..... probably yes?

I don't think a water alarm will help, if no one is there to hear it. ;) My boat has a high water alarm, but its for when you are sleeping on board, or relaxing during the day. I don't think it would help if no-one was on board.

Thanks for the web cam link, if I remember correctly, the larger boats are more to the left of where the web cam can see. Or perhaps they have it out of there by now?

Hopefully I have the location right, that was they told me as his mom can see all the activity from her front yard.

My wife just texted me a picture and sure enough there is a boat about 3/4 under water....what a shame. (I can't get the picture to load here for some reason.

I walked by a sailboat in its slip and heard an alarm beeping.

Through some neighbors I found the owner (who was 800 miles away) via cell phone. He talked me through finding the hidden key and accessing the issue.

With his instruction I was able to get his bilge pump going again and it drained for a long time.

Yes, I felt pretty good about taking the initiative! :D

So was this a power boat or a sail boat? It sounds like a sail boat?

Any idea what went wrong? Sorry to ask, but I like to learn from lessons like this.

I assume this was not the particular boat at the Akwa marina?

No. This one was in Florida.

Does anyone have any news or info from the Akwa incident?

The last news I heard was that they raised the boat and it was last seen being towed towards Eagle Island, so perhaps (due to it's size) it was being towed towards a lift that could handle it, i.e.: Silver Sands or Mountainview YC.

Akwa's shore power was out of commission until this past weekend. The boats battery might have been run down by the pump.

After all this time, I'm surprised that no one knows the actual details as to what happened with this boat. Does anyone know for sure? Please let us know.
