A Mall???

Hello Everyone,

Someone told me there was going to be a mall with a Macy's across from the Shaws (where the old K Mart and Jackson star used to be) is this true?

Mee-n-Mac 05-19-2005 07:16 PM

Somethings going in there

I hadn't heard that there was a Macy's planned. Last info was in the articles mentioned in these threads.

vacant Meredith retail stores

Someone who works at a nearby store said that the Brooks' in the Meredith Rt 25 Plaza was not going to renew due to the high rent. That would make three empty retail stores where there had been a 30 year grocery store and 30 year retail specialty store. That seems odd. I wonder what's the plan. If I has my druthers, the four store vacant block would be sold to Wal-mart. But, this is all idle chit-chat. Who knows.........knot I. And it looks like the Trader Joe's grand opening has been delayed, forever or something. If the Brooks moved out, where could they go?

You can't stop progress....

Drove by the old Jackson Star and K-Mart last week-end and was amazed. Everything has been bulldozed, much more land has been cleared up back, and only the tiny little cinema and the bank remain. Wait until you see it!

Lowe's ???

Is a Lowe's big box home & garden center planned for that spot in Gilford, from my recollection of an old thread in this forum? A Lowe's is planned for the exit 26, Tenny Mt Hgwy, cow-chow, corn field, across Rt 25 from the stop lights. I'll tell you, there is a big difference between the Home Depot in Somerville, Mass. and the Home Depot in Tilton, NH in terms of busy-ness and dizzy-ness.

I Can Probably Find Out...

My girlfriend works in commercial real estate. Her company owns the strip mall in Gilford so she's pretty familiar with the area. I'll find out about the Lowe's and about the site of the old Jackson Star and get back to this post.

We joke that her career revolves around putting up retail stores wherever she can find a place for them. And I make it abundantly clear to "stay as far away from the lake as possible." She knows how I (and everyone at Winnipesaukee.com) feel and knows there are certain areas she should just walk away from.

She has my mind, body, and soul, but she's not getting my (our) lake too.

The current plan is for Hannaford, Lowe's and Staples with the addition of a national chain like Chili's (hasn't been named yet). Lowe's will be around 170,000 SF and will probably have to wait until the cinema's lease is up.

Last I knew, the site plan was approved by the planning board (haven't heard of any changes with the exception of naming Staples), and it looks like everything is proceeding.

For years I thought that it would be great to see a West Marine store in that location. After visiting Sports and Marine Parafunalia today (and not for the first time either), I am happy that no such thing will likely ever happen. SMP gets my vote for selection and price (at least on the items I'm interested in :D ).

Mee-n-Mac 05-23-2005 09:48 AM

Agree on Parafunalia

For the most part I find their prices to be comparable or below the catalog prices of West Marine/BoatUS and no shipping or sales tax to boot :) I picked up some docklines yesterday for $2 - $4 less than WM would have charged. I wonder if they still do a red dot sale ?

dpg 05-23-2005 11:58 AM

I doubt very much the area will see a Macy's any time soon. Their kind of middle/upper end clothes and things, just do not see the area supporting it. Believe me no offense intended, I like the area the way it is. :D

Plus, there is a Peebles in the Belknap Mall which is similar (albiet on a smaller scale) to Macy's or Filene's.

Frank 05-23-2005 03:02 PM

What my wife would like to see there is a Starbucks!

Where was Trader Joe's planning to open???

arthurc 12-16-2005 07:17 PM

Lowe's

Ther's a new Lowe's about to open in Tilton below Walmart. Are we also going to still get Lowe's in the Gilford area?

Paugus Bay Resident 12-16-2005 10:15 PM

The cinema vacated their lease a few weeks ago. From what I recall, it was supposed to go through 2008. That's the spot where Lowe's is supposed to go. The last plan that was presented to the town included Lowe's. Based on the amount of soil they've been excavating (as we speak), I would assume it's still on. When is Lowe's in Tilton supposed to open? I haven't seen anything about in in the paper. HD could definitely use some competition, especially when it comes to lumber quality :rolleye2:

phoenix 12-17-2005 12:09 AM

would be surprised to see two Lowe's 15 miles apart in a relatively low population area at least in the winter

Paugus Bay Resident 12-17-2005 01:18 AM

Actually, they'd cater to 2 different areas, so I really wouldn't be suprised. I think there's more than enough population draw, plus Tilton has easy access to 93.

SAMIAM 12-17-2005 09:47 AM

Frank,I second that vote for Starbucks.....my wife is addicted to their Chai tea.I had to buy an expresso machine to froth the milk and travel to Tilton or buy it on the internet. I wonder if there's a 12 step program to get people off of that stuff.I'm affraid if we run out of it she might rob a 711 or do something crazy.

West Marine/Boat/US are actively looking at two spots in the lakes region, one to be a free-standing store and the other to be tied in with a marina. I have an inside scoop on this from a relative who is a long-time employee of the company. I am all for it!

Paugus Bay Resident 12-17-2005 10:55 AM

A Starbucks recently opened up in the Tilton Outlet Mall :)

Lowe's knows,

Snapshot:

2004 Sales: $36.5 billion

Employees: more than 175,000

Stores: 1,125

The Lakes Region is large, and growing every day!

I enjoyed a Pumpkin Latte there a few weeks ago while doing some holiday shopping with the family.

Went back two days later just to have another one!

MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! :D

Samiam - I can relate to your wife's addiction! ;) I'm a coffee girl, though, and heaven help us if we run out of beans for the cuisinart coffee-maker!
Keep back 500 Feet until I've had my coffee in the morning. :o

I agree with Phoenix....

A Home Depot in each Tilton and Concord; a new Lowe's about to open in Tilton. Forgive me for asking, but why open another Lowe's, as Phoenix asked, so close to another? While it may be more convenient for those in Meredith, Alton, Gilford and Laconia -- everyone else is probably closer to Tilton or Concord. Folks from the northern side of the lake can just as easily travel to Tilton as to Gilford.

But then again, my husband and I live in Gilford and buy all groceries at Market Basket in Tilton -- we refuse to shop at Shaw's or Hannaford in Gilford unless an emergency...the prices in off-season are high enough, but in the summer the prices are ridiculously high. The prices are MUCH less at MB year-round and quite worth the extra 10 miles each way.

What we REALLY need....

I think a 170,000 sq ft. Victoria's Secret is the way to go!

phoenix 12-18-2005 12:20 PM

agree on Market basket. Prices are much better

I wouldn't doubt that more large sports/marine/Outdoor stores start looking into the New England market. It was announced earlier this month that Bass Pro will be building their first New England store in Foxboro somewhere near the staduim.

BroadHopper 12-19-2005 10:01 AM

Victoria Secret!

170,000 sq ft.??????

If all the women of Winnipesaukee were to wear Victoria Secret line of clothing. The whole lake will become a no wake zone. Everyone will be put putting along the shores taking in the eye candy. Maybe that will solve all our problems!!!! :D

We have to make sure the store carrys the Winnipesaukee line of clothing........... :rolleye2:

phoenix 01-28-2006 04:39 PM

Is contruction under way and will anything be open this summer

BlackCatIslander 01-28-2006 05:44 PM

A Mall???

Do we know what stores will be there? Earlier there was mention of a Lowe's and Staples. Is there anything in the newspapers about the names of the tenants?

Paugus Bay Resident 01-29-2006 11:33 AM

Nothing new, except that the cinema ended it's lease early. The cinema site is where Lowe's is planned to go. Excavation continues. It's difficult to drive around Gilford without getting stuck behind a dump truck. Hannaford, Lowes and Staples are the only stores that have been anounced.
