Looking at buying a Tritoon. Where do you go to get boat insurance, have had many auto's with insurance, never owned a boat. I went on line with Progressive, quote was around $300.00. I was surprised it was that cheap. thought maybe I read it wrong. Looking for guidance from all you veteran Boater's

I found progressive to offer the best coverage at the cheapest price. Both of my boats have been covered with them for 8 years now.

I went thru my agent at home, the price was about the same, and yes I was a bit surprised. One thing we did when we got the lake house was up our Umbrella policy, just seemed like a good idea for not a lot of money.

We also use our regular agent, State Farm, who has been extremely easy to deal with. Haven't heard great things about Progressive, FWIW.

I used my homeowners policy until my boat reached 30 years old and they wouldn't insure it anymore and then I used Progressive as they had the best price.

Just got a new island boat (22' Eastern Lobster), local agent got quotes on adding to homeowners policy which was over $500 and Progressive was $217. I did get a small break on Progressive as my Harley is also covered by them however it still would be less than half the homeowners price. And Progressive has no layup period.

BTW a few years ago someone accidentally damaged the Harley while it was parked. No problem dealing with Progressive, all taken care of with genuine HD parts at the dealer.

Our home and cars are insured through USAA. When we bought the boat we found that USAA does not offer boat insurance - they have an affiliate program for that with Progressive. So that's what we got.

I've heard bad things about how Progressive handles claims.

Charter Lakes (http://www.charterlakes.com/) and Boat US (http://www.boatus.com/insurance/) seem to have a sterling reputation in the industry.

I got the same story with USAA. Made me use Progressive and when I sold the boat, & dropped the ins. big hassle. E-m's, phone calls, it cost me $$ to drop the ins. before the renewal came up!!

Boat insurance can be tricky. My experience taught me that having insurance where you boat can be very helpful, and having a good relationship with the Agent is very helpful. Fortunately for me, I boated where I live, and had a local Agent for home, cars, and boat - the best of all worlds.

I've been very happy with the service and pricing of BoatUS insurance for the past 12 years. Exceptional customer service and quick no-hassle claim service! As mentioned above, be sure to read up on Agreed Value vs. ACV (Actual Cash Value) policies.
If you're only looking for liability protection, consider having it added to your homeowners policy to save some money. Remember that cheaper isn't always better.

Progressive
 

For those that have Progressive, any insight about which package you went with (they offered 3 during the quoting process)? The basic package didn't cover towing and/or uninsured boater coverage. Is it worth the peace of mind?

On my 22' Eastern, I have a "Total Loss Replacement/Purchase Price" policy. Basically I get exactly what I paid for the boat when new ($51,000.00) in case of a total loss at any time. There is no depreciation whatsoever.

This policy includes roadside assistance, and coastal navigation coverage within 75 nautical miles, (not that I need that but it is included). I also have a $1000.00 replacement cost coverage for personal effects. My trailer is also covered as well as any and all installed marine electronics and uninsured boater...

Total annual premium = $177.00

If I remember correctly, the difference in price from their basic plan to this total purchase price plan plan was minuscule and well worth getting.

The rate that I mentioned in post #6 includes uninsured boater, fuel spill and towing coverage.

Progressive is OK
 

I had a claim with Progressive. No problems whatsoever. I paid the deductible, they wrote a check to the marina and everybody was happy. Only took a few days for them to see the boat and wrote the check to the marina on the spot, I think. Progressive via USAA.

Boat Insurance
 

Absolutely Boat US. Launched the lower unit over in the NW corner of the lake, not paying attention like a buffoon, but worked with the Ewings over at Dave's and all was put back together better than new. Ditto for a windshield replacement which was really hard to duplicate on the Minx.

Progressive's quote sounds about right, but be sure to check with whoever you use for auto or homeowners insurance - you may get a discount for having multiple insurance policies with the same company.

Progressive and State Farm were close in price for me, but I have a good relationship with my State Farm agent and have heard a few so-so reviews of Progressive's claim handling (although there were many positive experiences as well), so went with my existing State Farm agent.

I just switched from Progressive. They do NOT cover freeze damage, don't even offer extra coverage. Just something to consider.

Progressive vs. Boat US
 

My Boat US policy came up for renewal and after reading this post decided to shop it against Progressive. Boat US for my 26' Formula and 16' Whaler was about $900.00. Progresive came in at $466.00 for both. I will say that the Boat US Policy has more detail in it and seems a little more geared towards costal boats to me. I did the agreed value option and went with standard 100/300.

Having been on the lake a long time and the boats stay there my feeling is it's a low risk proposition for me personally. I have an impeccable driving record and do not indulge. No brainer for me......I just cut my costs in 1/2 thanks to the forum !!

We went through our Allstate agent. We paid $500 but got a $250 deductible on a brand new boat 50K. Plus environmental and towing. I already had to use the insurance and was happy to have the $250 deductable.

Progressively Progressive
 

I started with Progressive auto ( thoroghly outstanding on 2 auto claims) added Condo insurance then finally boat insurance. Each policy by itself was best price I could find.

I just got 3 quotes from Progressive, Geico, and Skisafe (thanks to previous poster) and Skisafe is the best of the 3 and also includes freeze protection which the other 2 do not.

I also recieved a nice email from SkiSafe about my quote.

As an added bonus, so far I have recieved a dozen SPAM emails from everything from "senior dating to Terminix pest control as a result of seeking online quotes.

To me that is the saddest part of using the internet today...as handy as it is, your information is sold immediately to the spammers. :mad:

I do realize that when you seek something online there is ALWAYS some kind of fine print you have to agree to in order to get what you are seeking and to me that is just the most frustrating part of the WWW.

You are correct! I believe there are entities out there that are trying to change that fact...so enjoy while we can!

Progressive
 

I have Progressive for Boat and Motorcycle. They have paid without problem on MC damage. Policy for boat is $288.00.

BTW the way to avoid all the email junk when policy shopping is to avoid sites that are not directly related to the insurance company you are shopping.

I was directly involved with the companies in question so not sure how to avoid spam under these circumstances.
It's the same no matter what you are inquiring about online...my info is always shared with the spammers.
If you don't think companies like Progressive and Geico don't sell your email address you are probably, on the naive side (respectfully speaking) :)

I use progressive some 2 cars, boat, and home. No issues with them and they saved me some cash when I switched to them.

I will probably go with SkiSafe as they are the only ones to contact me directly with a name and email on the other end.
Their quote is quite, inexpensive at $147 for a year but I'm only insuring a 19 foot bow rider.

Geico. Best rate for me.

Boat insurance is one of the last things that are relatively cheap these days. Everyone seems surprised when they get a quote.
