Trivia Question
I am completely immersed in a book right now that made a very interesting claim. I did further research and confirmed it indeed is true and figured I would share this with the group.
It happened on August 3, 1852 What is the first recorded Intercollegiate competitive sporting event in History? What colleges competed? Where did they compete? The answer is totally awesome..... http://www.norwichbulletin.com/artic...NEWS/160139981 (there are many other links but this one doesn't contain the name of either the Sport or the Colleges...) First Intercollegiate Sporting Event
Actually the first organized intercollegiate sporting event in history took place in 1827, a cricket match between Cambridge and Oxford followed by a boat race between these 2 schools in 1829.
The Harvard versus Yale races on the Thames in Connecticut were so popular that they used to place bleachers on railroad flat cars and follow the race on the rails that run along the river. It is a pleasant cruise up the Thames with many historical sites to view along the way. While there are many photo-ops on this trip make sure these do not include Electric Boat (submarine building facility) and the Groton sub base. Also observe the security zones along the river. |
