Action photographer "Jeff" always captures the perfect shot, and his last put him in direct line with a race car crash. Now in a wheel chair with a broken leg one hot summer in NY city, he sits bored at home. He begins watching his neighbors through the rear window in his apartment. After some suspicious behavior, Jeff suspects that the salesman that lives across the alley, Lars Thorwald played by Raymond Burr; has killed his wife.
