Under Squirrel siege
 

My front yard is under a squirrel siege !

They are attracted by my bird-feeders. Some hanging, some on poles, etc.
It's like the 'Golden Corral Buffet' out there for these guys... Come and get it!

I'm at my limit ! So asking for suggestions.....
Pellet gun, BB gun, or 12 GA ? :)

The feeder will be coming down as soon as the weather improves, then the birds are on their own until next winter.

Suggestions?

Depends on what your intention is...

BB gun will teach them a lesson...

Pellets will take care of them for good...

Although my wife can't typically hit a barn if she was 5 feet away, one year she got so pissed by the same thing she pumped the crap outta the BB gun took aim and wouldn't ya know -- her one in a million shot came -- through the squirrel along with through the plexi of the bird feeder!

MORAL: BB guns can also be a "permanent" fix

Ive shot my share. Any of your weapons of choice above will work. What I do now is beat them at their own game and devise ways they cant get to the feeder. Its actually pretty fun.

I've tried searching for the post by, I think ApS. It was a squirrel launcher. Perhaps someone else can find the video. Quite effective, and funny.:laugh:

Get a bunch of 1 liter or quart soda bottles. Drill a small hole in the bottom of each and sting them on a wire then attach the ends of the wire to two trees. Hang bird feeders from the wire in between the soda bottles. When the squirrels attempt to get to the feeders by climbing out on the wire they'll have to step on the soda bottles which will then spin and the squirrels fall to the ground. It works great!!

I hang mine on a pulley system strung between a second story deck and a tree. The pulley allows me to pull in the feeders to fill them, then pull them back out to between the tree and the deck. The string is too thin for them to walk on, and the middle spot is too far for them to jump from tree or deck.

They still hang around on the ground underneath for the droppings, providing great entertainment for me and our 2 dogs when I let them out.

Not sure what either of them will ever do if they manage to catch one. :coolsm:

This is what I do except rather than string I use thin gauge wire I add the soda bottles like MCDUDE above. I have the squirrels chew the string sending feeders to the ground.

Correction. I use the wire from the deck to the tree and then string to the feeders/thru the pulley. I tie the string to a coat hanger that is attached to a pole. The coat hanger stops them from getting to the string to cut the feeder down.

Instead of trying to teach them a lesson, why don't you give them their own feeder...my neighbor has a small roofed house (20x20, maybe)...he provides them with food and they love it...his cat sits and watches them...no harm, no foul :liplick:

For feeders on poles, we've had good luck in the past using the cannister-type baffles (as long as the pole is tall enough and far enough from structures they could jump from). Hanging feeders are another matter. My son suggested a paint ball gun . . . deters the squirrels, but also helps to identify repeat offenders. :D

Believe me, your wife is definitely not the first person to put a nice hole through the feeder trying to take out a pesky squirrel!

I use a 5 gallon plastic bucket, fill it about 1/2 with water, pour enough bird seed in that floats on top of the water, then place it under/near the bird feeders, Squirrel/chipmunk/rodent, looks in from above or climbing up the bucket like they do, sees a bucket of feed, yup, jumps right in for chow, splash, so I think you get it . . .

Eight the first time I provided them with an option! No guns in my MA neighborhood, or house!

I'll admit to a little "squirrel team six" activity with a fully automatic air soft rifle. It's amazing how accurate they are on a cold still morning, sometimes I've hit them two or three times by the time they realize what's going on. :D Plastic pellets are non lethal, results are hysterical!

Yup, for some reason, this year is worse than most for me too.

Spice it up
 

Mix red pepper flakes or some other hot seasoning into the birdseed. The squirrels can't tolerate it but the birds won't notice.

I'm envious you only have a squirrel problems with your bird feeder. Three bears arrived the other night and completely destroyed our feeding station. :(

Because they are an UNVITED nuisance that get into my house and my furniture during the winter. They build nests in my attic. I've shot hundreds over the years. I don't want them around. I do not INVITE them.

The thought of "baiting" an animal and then shooting it in its own environment doing what is natural...trying to get food...WOW!

The solution to your "Squirrel Siege" is to stop baiting them and let them live. They are really not bothering you. You create the problem with your own behavior and then want to kill animals who are doing no more damage than stealing your bird seed...Jeeez! And don't say you are feeding the birds and not baiting squirrels. You know what originates your problem.

STOP FEEDING the Animals..It's Welfare. You are NOT helping them. You are making them Dependent. We know how THAT works. Let nature take it's course. The animals did Just Fine before some of you started feeding them. :( :( NB

Not sure where Candido is located in Alton Bay, but on a different social media, someone reported a bear crossing the road on Rte 28A (Eastside Dr) in close proximity to the Alton Dump, er Landfill, er transfer station.

We're located on Trask Side Road just off 28A.

Momma bear and two youngsters came over our fence and demolished the feeders earlier this week.

I agree—we're bringing big wildlife from distant hills to feed and relax.

About five years ago, I found a twenty dollar bill floating in the water at the Meredith town docks, and every time I walk past that spot I hope to see another twenty. I grabbed my tennis racquet from the car, reaching down and out, and just reached that twenty with the racquet.

For a bear, finding a bird feeder full of sunflower seeds is just like that ..... it never-ever forgets!

....... where's the bear?
 

Had a wee bit of a black bear face-to-face yesterday while soaking up some heat in the outdoor hot tub ...... which was actually pretty scary at the time.

So's it was about 7:15-pm and I'm sitting in the outdoor hot tub reading a newspaper with the pump not running so it is very very quiet outside.

From behind me I hear three soft grunts and I think it must be the canada goose standing down on the dock looking to get more cheez-its. So's I turn around to look and very much to my surprise, there's like a 250-300-lb lone black bear right there in the yard looking at me while on all fours, from a distance of about 15-20-feet away.

This immediately gets my attention and I'm thinking ....... holy crap....this is a real big black bear and very close but at the same time seems to be very calm and relaxed and almost maybe scared itself.

As it walks very slowly I make three strong loud claps to hopefully scare it away ...... and it very slowly and calmly does walk away and goes around behind the neighbor's house.

.....it was a very calm and polite bear .... a nice good bear ....yah!


Have heard that a hand held, air horn is good for keeping a bear away, plus I removed the outdoor grill which has been used for grilling hamburgers, lately.

Add a ramp for small critters!
 

I use this method for mice and chipmunks except I lean a board on the edge of the bucket to the ground making a ramp. A few seeds on the length of the ramp to lure them in and BINGO! Works like a dream.
