Weirs closed to swimming, today...

So much for a refreshing dip in the Lake at the Weirs, today.

Wing Nut 07-01-2005 12:52 PM

Geez!

This seems to happen on a yearly basis now. Seems like they (someone, anyone) need to find a solution to this.

SAMIAM 07-01-2005 04:05 PM

Biggest problem is caused by duck feces.I keep roman candles and a glove near my back door. When the poor little duckies swim into my beach I put on the glove and hold the roman candle in my hand so I can direct the reports in their direction. It works every time and doesn't harm the ducks.

GWC... 07-01-2005 05:17 PM

Hmmm...

I thought the idea is to reduce fecal matter?

If that scares the you know what out of them, are you really reaching your goal or are the duckies exacerbating the situation, as they leave with haste? :rolleye2:

One child's dirty diaper has enough coliform bacteria to close a beach for days.

Aquadeziac 07-02-2005 01:49 PM

That is if they wear a diaper. I have seen numerous people letting their infants play in the water sans diaper. That must be the way they do things in Lawrence and Lowell.

Open Again

According to today's Laconia Citizen, the E. coli level at Weirs Beach has come down and the DES has allowed the beach to re-open.

GWC... 07-02-2005 09:39 PM

That's good...

because there were more than just a few people in the water at the Weirs, today. ;)

Lady Di 07-03-2005 08:48 PM

This is all very disturbing to me.

When I was still there, there was nothing like this. In my mind, it's still all like "On Golden Pond".

Most of what I have been reading the past 2 years has been about Big Scary Boats, the unfortunate accident (?) in Meredith where the older man was run over, .......

I feel as though the Lake has lost its innocence.

I miss the old days at Carrie Beach......

the fireworks on the Brewster Lawn.....

the kisses after the Bubble Room....

the cracking of the ice when we took the old car out there.......oh well

getting off topic here....

sorry.....

Let's try not to throw stones!

Aquad...your comments about Lawrence and Lowell are highly uncalled for and derogatory. Let's keep the forum clean (no pun intended) and respectful!

E. coli bacteria are found in all warm-blooded creatures.

Waterfowl and carnivorous mammals have the least. Fish have none.

Waterfowl can die of lung infections if they breathe in aerosolized (dried/airborne) E. coli.

The bacteria will eventually die after a couple of days in uninfected water.

Beach condition this evening

After seeing the absolutely disgusting condition of the beach this evening, I won't be entering the water any where nearby for several weeks. At six this evening the entire beach was littered with every manner of trash, including dirty diapers, beer and soda containers, food, paper trash, and several portable gas grills which had been abandoned there. The trash barrels were filled to overflowing, and debris was everywhere. My heart was absolutely sick to witness this disgusting sight. :fire:

For certain the city has fallen far short of the mark with regard to maintaining the trash barrels, but there is no excuse for simply leaving your trash where it sits and walking away. I am simply astounded. My only wish was that I had my camera with me - but then again I really don't want to remember how disgraceful the whole scene was.

KonaChick 07-05-2005 10:59 AM

What a shame, and remember that a % of that trash also ended up in the lake. It's such a shame that people come here to take from the lake and it's surroundings but forget to give back. Let me rephrase that..make a CHOICE not to give back.

Lakewinniboater 07-06-2005 12:08 PM

Agreed

I also saw the trash and the condition of the beach during the day and night.

I wish I could say that I would like to ban those types from the area. Unfortunately, it is a free country.

Last year an aquaintence of ours had to two 4 people in an inflatable back from the MIDDLE OF THE BROADS. They didn't speak much english and didn't have a PADDLE!!!!!

Now, if one of us had hit them..... it would have been a tragedy and they would have blamed speed when in actuality it was the 4 people not being educated on the rules of the lake and boating.

They were visiting for the day at Ellacoya. (which isnt as bad as weirs..... but certainly not great)
