Would like to see the City of Laconia create a March Madness Snowmobile Skimming event every year, on the Saturday closest to Saint Patrick's day, March 17.

While snowmobile skimming is not legal in New Hampshire, Maine, and Minnesota .... supposedly, snowmobile skimming or skipping events are held in Wisconsin.

It probably could be done legally here in the Weirs Channel, as a sanctioned event, if the City of Laconia was the responsible sponsor. What the heck ..... after all ..... Laconia Motorcycle Week has been held here since 1923.

Could be a good event for local businesses and help transition from wintah to spring time .....ayuh!


If the City can hold a dogsled race in February......then how's about a snowmobile skimming event in March ...... aaarrrrrrooooooooo!

Although I like the idea of a skimming event, it should certainly not be held in the Channel. It is WAY too dangerous.

The guys that did that knew what they were doing, and it showed. For them to do it under those conditions seems fairly reasonable. But for the less skilled participants to do it in the narrow Channel with immovable objects 20 feet from the center path at 40mph seems like bad news. Yes, the spectating would be great but it wouldn't be worth it.

Hold it someplace else with the types of safety precautions needed and it is worth considering!

Somehow I'm not sure the MP would agree, though! :)

There's also a skimming demo at the Highnote Music Festival in Epping in September.

I have no beef with people that want to run open water if they want to take the risk for a thrill....so be it.
There is one thing that concerns me, though. Most novice snowmobilers only feel comfortable on the lake when they are following a packed trail.....thinking the ice is safe since others have been on it.
What a shame it would be if some family drove right into the water if they happened to be following one of those trails that is used for skimming.

The problem is, they almost never do really understand or accept the risk all by themselves. Someone gets killed or seriously injured and someone is without a husband or father or the family suffers through loss of income, permanent disability, etc. Yeah, insurance pays for a lot of costs but MY insurance goes up overall when payouts are made for someone who decided that THEY wanted to "take a risk". Emergency personnel are put into risk and there is a cost for those services. Can you imagine saying "Leave them at the bottom of the lake because they knew what the risk was."?

Realistically there are all sorts of risky activities that people do daily and require help when it goes badly. Life with NO risk can be a bit boring. There's a balance but we shouldn't ignore the real costs of risk taking.

One of the books I'm reading discusses the black boxes in cars and how insurances give discounts if customers grant access to them. The author goes on to predict that some day--because of risk takers, litigiousness, etc.--we'll ALL be monitored or be denied/charged exorbitant fees for coverage.
