2017 Missing Markers
Repaired and replaced and ready for the 2017 boating season. Both the black spar buoy and light buoy are now in place.
New for 2017, there are probably many more than this one. Just an FYI, on a missing marker noticed yesterday for folks getting out on the water early this year for 2017 before Marine Patrol has a chance to repair them. I believe this is also a lighted buoy as well. While it is not uncommon for the lighted marker to be taken out for the winter and still be out at this time of the year. The companion black top seems to be gone as well. It's some what of an open area here and there are several in this part of the lake. I usually count all of them to make sure I go around the hazards here and not go in between them. With one missing (at the moment) it is really easy to make the turn around the hazards way to early (going south) or (late going north) and get yourself in trouble. Again just an FYI, for the early season boaters, I'm sure marine patrol will have this repaired soon. http://i65.tinypic.com/2ilzrrm.png Anyone know for sure if this is a lighted buoy? Or it's number if it is. |
Be careful when navigating the channel between Sandy and Long Island as those markers are WAY out place....

How about a new thread for 2017?
I'm heading up there in a week or so for the 2017 maiden voyage and began making mental notes of all of the missing marker reports until I realized all but two of the posts were from 2015!

Missing - Parker and Dollar Islands
Parker Island (near Wolfboro) - one of the two black markers is missing.
Dollar Island - Red marker missing closest to island |
Are people reporting these marker issues to the Marine Patrol, or just assuming that someone else will do it?

One of the two black tops is missing just northeast of Lands End on Long Island. The highlighted one is missing. Harilla Landing is at the top of the picture.

Until they start reinstalling the lighted marker buoys they would probably do nothing. More than likely as they go around the lake doing the spring maintenance they probably use some sort of master chart and check each one for position and if it is there at all. Keep in mind there are a lot of lakes to check beyond Winnipesaukee that need to be looked after. According to the Marine Patrols web-site they maintain over 5000 navigation aids. After the lighted buoys are in (some what signaling the end of spring maintenance), I'm sure they would investigate any report of a missing marker immediately. At the moment I think it would be like "everyone" with out power calling into the power company during an outage with redundant reports. I think only a handful of people do this job at Marine Patrol. Give them a chance. |
The Marine Patrol also reads the forum and posts here too. I would think that they are seeing these posts and telling their maintenance people when there is information about markers that would help them.

Certainly a phone call to report a missing or misplaced spar can be annotated and when they are setting the FL's, they may want to take a few minutes to reset or replace nearby spars. Can't hoit! 😆

The blacktop on the NE tip of Bear is missing. The good thing is there is an empty jug placed on top of the rock there that is just below the surface.
Also there is a mooring ball that is almost 100% submerged between perch rock pile (area in the marked right across from the Bear Island post office) and the red tops that are off the south side of Pine. There is still a chain attached as well as an anchor as I tried to move it but could not. Anyone that goes through there be careful. When the water is calm you can see it- with chop not so much. That would not be fun to hit. |

Twin Islands Tuftonboro
The black top marker to the east of the Twin Islands, near Lane's End Marina, is missing. Probably best to stay on the Moultonboro side of the bay if you dont know where that marker should be.

I believe the marker is there but submerged below the high water level...so be careful in that area.

Missing Buoy Update: $ Island
The red buoy west of Dollar I$land is back in place. The new buoy is "taller" with a sufficient amount of white visible, therefore easier to spot in wavy conditions. Thanks MP. 🐻

Perfect! That's our tubing and skiing area lol and with that many markers I would never have noticed one missing ... and gotten myself in trouble. Thank you for the update! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
I noticed that someone had hit the southern red marker off Dolly Island earlier this week leaving just the white pole. The next day the marker was missing but was replaced the following day with a new one. Thank you Marine Patrol for a speedy replacement!
