Biggest risk on the lake isn't the weather or rocks, its losers like this guy.....at least he won't be operating a boat any time soon. Did anyone happen to see this event unfold?

While I don't wish ill will on anyone, I wonder how many innocent boaters the Witches have saved over the years?.... I would certainly rather see the drunks hit rocks than other boaters!!

The article said he hit shore while others have said the hit the Witches. I saw the red lights from the Gilford Fire boat and the Marine Patrol boat blue lights at about 10 PM last night. From my house it looked like he hit the Witches.

Great point...like I said the witches can "reach out and touch someone" that may be inebriated...kinda like casting a spell on the evil doers.

That's what you get for having a lawn on an island...

If you saw your old yard after last weeks rain, you'd want a lawn too!

In today's LDS:

An Alton man was arrested on a charge of boating while intoxicated after striking the notorious outcropping of rocks known as "The Witches" in Lake Winnipesaukee on Saturday night.

The Marine Patrol reported that an emergency call was issued at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday night for a boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee, south of Timber Island and in the area known as "The Witches," named after a group of rocks that rise to just below the waterline.

Responding Marine Patrol officers were able to pull the boat off of the rocks and tow it to Gilford Town Docks, where the operator, Tyler Finethy, 24, of Alton and his two occupants both refused medical treatment.

Finethy, after being administered a field sobriety test, was arrested for boating while intoxicated. The Marine Patrol report said that alcohol appears to be a contributing factor to the crash, and noted that state laws treat boating while intoxicated as severely as driving while intoxicated.

Witch Way?

Years ago, on our way out to East Bear Island late at night, we encountered a boat near the south end of Bear Island that appeared lost. We stopped to confirm this thought. The person wanted to return to the Weirs. We suggested that the pilot follow us around the north end of Mark Island and then advised him to go west toward the lights of the Weirs. Instead, he turned south and headed towards the evil ladies in waiting. We often wonder what happened after his speedy departure. 🦇

Excessive alcohol and driving/boating/dating is a bad mix anytime. Going anywhere near the Witches after dark , even sober, seems to be an equally bad idea except for those who are very familiar with the area. Even in daylight, I check, double check, then follow a boat with a deeper draft than mine....

It REALLY isn't an area to fear .... simply respect & be cognizant of where you are ...

In reality, there is substantial safe waters through and around them !

I agree for years I went around them near governors and Lockes and then I wanted to learn the down the gut way to save time and traffic and after a few times and checking the maps, I now navigate them day or night right down the middle way.

Maybe if we renamed it "Lost Island" there wouldn't be so much apprehension?

The Mount goes around on both sides (Governor's and Timber). You should be able to fit. Of course, there's no alcohol in the wheelhouse of the Mount. If your wheel house has alcohol and you hit something, you get three lines in the paper. If you hit the witches, the media drag out all the canned stories about the "famed, most dangerous place on the lake."
