Fresh Water Mussels

We eat salt water mussels al the time. I'm sure there is a good reason why I have never seen anyone eat fresh water mussels. Are they edible???

Yum

The mussels are edible but not very tasty. Also, watch out for red tide.

Don't Taste Too Good

When I was younger I used to get them from the bottom of the lake and we tried cooking them several different ways on several different occasions and they were gross every time. There's absolutely no taste to them. Its like chewing on a rubber band. It was still a cool thing to do-fetching your own lunch. My friends were always impressed. Of course they never had the nerve to try any mussels for themselves.
