Wow! Nicely Done, McDude!!!

Since we're on the subject of food in Alton, allow me to give major thumbs up for two of these places:

Shibley's Victoria Pier - Excellent menu with a great view, and friendly staff. It's always on the list of "must do" places when my mother comes to town, and never fails to disappoint. While you're there be sure to save room for dessert - the creme brulee is out of this world! :liplick:

Sandy Point - no other place in the area has Prime Rib as good as theirs! I can't eat seafood, but everybody in the family insists there's no place better for Lobster. I just go and gorge myself on the prime rib. Staff is excellent, ownership/management is first rate. Always have a super time, and a superb meal there! :liplick:

Nice job, Mcdude...and as my waistline shows, I haven't missed many of the places you have shown. Good food is certainly plentiful here in the Alton, Gilford, Wolfeboro, New Durham side of the lake. Please come on Down!!!!

I've never eaten at Shibleys and I might not with $16 lobster rolls,$8.25 tuna melt,and $6.25 grilled cheese.Yikes!Isn't that a little steep?I'll stick with Waldo Peppers thank you.

I know alot of people like Sandy Point. I went 2 years ago & have not been back. I had scallops that were very average. I've had better, they were a little chewy/tough.

The carpet was retro seventies & was soiled badly. It needed replacement. The swivel chairs were compressed foam to the frame covered with naugahyde vinyl. The walls were fake wood paneling, I thought that went out with the seventies.

As far as lobster, its pretty hard to screw up a boiled lobster. I've had boiled lobster at many restaurants & it never tastes any different. Boiled lobster is good any where you go.

I did have a great meal at The Dockside 4 weeks ago & breakfast/lunch is always great at the Olde Bay Diner.

I would agree with SIKSUKR that Shibleys can be a bit pricey but no more so than most places on the lake. The portions are ample though, especially the burgers. If you want value w/no frills then the Dockside is the place to go. Though I'm not a fish person, "Mee" and others have had the haddock sandwich on multiple occasions and have pronounced it both delicious and huge (I can attest to the latter).

You can't eat seafood???!!!

I ate at Shibleys for dinner this summer and was pleasantly surprised. The menu has a wide variety of different foods. I had the duck tenderloin which is one of my favorite foods. The sauce and prep was just right. It was nice to see a restaurant that does something besides hamburgers and fried food. The handicap access is the best around. I will be going back.

What is that now 3 eating establishments that has either been sold or out of business in Alton. What does that leave, 3 restaurants in wonderful Alton? Is all of this because amount of traffic in our wonderful little (winter residence) Alton? :)

The restaurant business is a tiring business, and the folks that owned Karen's in the center of Alton I'm sure just got tired of getting up before the barnyard animals day after day after day. I don't know the folks that own the Main Street Cafe, but breakfasts there are usually pretty full.

I do know the folks that own the Dockside, and they have said for the past few years that they are not in for the long haul (they've already been there) and were/are looking forward to the day they can sell, and relax a little. Whether you're there seven days a week, six days a week, or five days a week, it is a grind and you can get mighty weary.

For a small town, Alton has had quite a restaurant industry, with Dockside, JP China, Alton Bay diner, Shibley's, Shibley's at the Pier, Pop's Clam Bar, Sandy Point, William Tell, Wise Owl, River Run Deli, Main Street Cafe...yes some are seasonal, but still, a lot of dining experience. Not far to go Johnson's in New Durham, or places in Wolfeboro or Gilford/Laconia. Not to mention that Alton Circle and Amylynne's sell prepared food as well. To keep your slice of the pie, you need to be on top of your game whenever you are open, not only have good food but great service, and a nice place to eat. Kind of hard to do each and every day, especially when you are the one over the grill, the burners, and reaching in the oven.

My hat's off to all who feed us and best of luck in the sale of their business and their future.

I wanted to echo Upthesaukee's post regarding the Alton restaurant scene. I have eaten at all the restaurants he mentions and they are all excellent. They all have their own charm and ambience. Of course it's not Boston restaurants.. but if I wanted Boston I would not be in this piece of heaven.

I just returned with my first take out king stuffed lobster and steamers from Shady Point. I am pleased to report ...they are still great.. Eating it at home watching the rain..hoping the lake continues to fill....Life really does not get better

....after a not so successful attempt at dinner and a bistro menu, ownership has reverted back to the original owner/manager and dinner is NO LONGER BEING SERVED. They still do catering.

Well if you've got the munchies in Alton Bay at this time of year (and you want dinner) you are pretty much OUT of LUCK. I was surprised to see this past Friday that the Dockside, with its' new pub, was CLOSED. Main Street Cafe is no longer serving dinner. Sandy Point and Shibley's Victoria Pier are closed for the season. Drove by the William Tell Inn in West Alton and it was in darkness. The only place to have dinner, apparently, is at J. P. China's unless you want to head to the next town for Johnson's Steack and Seafood or in the other direction, over to Ellacoya Barn and Grille.

Does anyone know whether the Dockside has closed for the season? :confused:

Things have slowed down from summer time, and they first cut back to Wed to Sun. Still a little slow, so they are taking off about six weeks and the last I heard, was they plan to reopen after the new year, when hopefully we will have skiing and other sports going on.

Pop's Clam Shell opens today....May 3rd! (Week-ends ONLY until July.)

We used to go to Pop's all the time. The onion rings were to die for. But we stopped after going one evening and finding literally thousands of spiders in the rafters of the porch that is over the order/pick-up area. It was really, really gross. :eek:

I know it was a long time ago (years), but we can't quite get past it.

Kind of pricey, too, but not necessarily out of line with other similar places.

Great scallops, too.

"Spider" years
 

I am a person who finds spiders to be very "Icky". Therefore, I am always on the prowl for them. Which has led me to discover that there are apparently "Spider years" when the spiders are seemingly out of control, and yet other years when they seem to have vanished. They perhaps respond to humidity levels or something, I'm not at all sure, and almost don't want to know, but I can tell you this ...

There were summers where I would literally patrol the entire inside and outside of our old location, with a long-handled brush every day at 4:00PM. I did this at that exact hour because the sun was in the right spot to show the webs. Every single day I would remove literally hundreds of webs! :eek: When I was satisfied that I'd gotten them all, the brush would be dropped into a bucket of extremely hot soapy water until I was sure anything in it was dead. Next day same exercise, same result. It nearly drove me mad.

On the other hand, there were years when I would not find a single spider or web. Go figure.

So, in defense of the fine folks at Pop's I suspect that you happened to have come upon those spiders during a "spider year" and even the most diligent hunting wouldn't have kept them at bay. :(
